In selecting a good niche, ask your self what do you want to do first or what is your hobbies, interests, and the like. The reason I am telling you to do this is because even if the niche is profitable, if you have no idea about it or not interested on it in real life, it will be a waste of time and money in coming months... I am speaking based on my experience..

Even if I was presented before with superniches with large market, I rejected them all as my preference is automotive.. and since I like cars, I am making money out of it online and offline... Start doing niche research on things that interests you...

It's not any different than making money offline. Making money is making money. You have to exchange value for value, and if you want to be profitable, you have to either ensure that your value is either more valuable than what they have (money) or that they will give you something more valuable than that even (arbitrage).

As far as niches go you have two options - find out how other people are making money and do what they do but better or find out what people actually want and give it to them. Based on those options you will know whether you stand a chance or not, whether you're selling cars, groceries, or internet products.

Here's one way to do it...

Head over to the ClickBank Marketplace and browse through all of the categories they have. Once you've found something that interests you, you now need to narrow it down.

For instance if you chose the Health and Fitness category, you need to narrow it down some more. So from here you might be interested in Strength Training - but you're still not at your niche... if we narrow it down one more time, we could come up with things like, "How to increase your bench press", "Gaining muscle for skinny guys", "Working out without weights" etc... THESE are your niches.

      So in short:

      Health and Fitness (mass market)
      Strength Training (general market)
      Increasing your bench (niche market)

And to find out how profitable that niche is, generally you can check out the products gravity number in your niche. But don't let that be the only determinant.

How do I choose a niche? The FIRST thing I do before I even select a niche is get absolute clarity on what I want to accomplish and WHY.

Then read this thread as it will save you a ton of headaches:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-internet-marketing-discussion-forum/500934-57-lessons-learned-over-14-years-internet-marketing-list-i-wish-i-had-when-i-first-started.html

With that under your belt you should view a niche as a specific need or want.

When you think of niches as specific needs or wants then you are better able to come up with ideas. Jot down about 8 to 10 ideas and then begin to do some research.

I personally do NOT go into a niche if there aren't enough products or services in it because I only want to go into a niche that has PROVEN demand; and the number of products and services will give you the biggest clues.

Secondly, I look at the advertising dollars; I follow the money and where it's being spent.

Do you pay attention to ads when you surf the net? When you're on Facebook? What about your e-mail inbox? Do you see ads there?

Do you think people are making a killing advertising teeth whitening product? I mean, I see their ads everywhere! Yes, they are.

If people are spending money in that niche, if there are products and services in that niche then SOMEONE is making money.

That's not to say you cannot make money in some obscure niche or even a micro or very specialized niche, but you don't want to get into those until you've had some experience yet with a niche that has proven buyers.

What do most have in common in terms of needs and wants? And how can you apply this to niches?

Niche selection is fairly easy because you should choose something that you are very proficient in. Or at least something that you are interested in enough to become proficient in.

    1. Know your monetization model in advance. Will you offer affiliate products, CPA/PPL etc?
    2. How expensive or difficult is it to reach the target market. We live in an environment where you can pay north of $20 per click on certain adwords keywords so you need a plan to draw traffic.
    3. What is your USP to keep your traffic coming back for another bite of the cherry?

I disagree. I've had the most success with a niche I knew nothing about in the beginning. There was money there for the taking so I learned enough to start promoting. I continued to educate myself on the niche and more importantly, the demographic.

I now know more about the products in the niche then the people who use them.

youseff, in response to your PM, it was gaming. In the beginning it was specifically World Of Warcraft, but I eventually promoted about 40 different guides for 20 or so different games.

I still have a version of the site (It used to be the blog) that gets most of it's action from Diablo III guides. The niche has changed a great deal since the early, wide open days.

    Q: How do I choose a niche?

A: Mostly I go for topics I'm interested in IF I can determine they are viable, i.e. I can create content, there are products on sale that sell well, other people are already making money in the niche, I can get traffic and so on.

Q: How do you know that a niche is profitable?

A: Well I check a number of things including the monthly Google search volumes, what products are on sale on Amazon, Ebay, Clickbank and other networks and whether they sell well (check review numbers and so on), also look at who's advertising on Google, what they are selling and the cost to advertise.

Q: If the niche doesn't have products to promote do you think you could make money from it?

A: Chances are if there's no products to promote that is for good reason - there's no money to be made or not a problem that needs to be solved.

I like to see some proven track record of other people marketing and making money in the niche most of the time so I know for a fact there's money to be made.

Other things you need to consider...
    • Is there a desperate problem people need solved or a real passion they have that will cause them to spend money?
    • Traffic - where will it come from? Free or paid?
    • Can you create content or afford to outsource it?
    • Is it an evergreen niche or a fad?
    • Are your target audience easy to find online?
    • Are there already people competing in the niche and can you do something better, more unique or different to them?
    • Do you have enough interest, passion or dedication to this niche to continue if things get touch?
    • Can you think of a minimum of 30 topics off the top of your head that you'll create content on?

Start with a niche (a hobby, for example) that you already have an interest in and know something about. It will take it easier for you to relate to your audience and write content. If you are in a profitable niche, there will be lots of products to promote (probably both digital and tangible). If there aren't a lot of products to promote, it's not a very profitable niche.

Do something that you love. If you choose a niche that you have passion about, you will definitely make money online. But direct your efforts to meeting your target market's needs. Have a USP and do your Customer Avatar right. That way, you will be solving your customers' needs.

I agree you should go with a niche you are interested in, that way it will be easier for you to write about if you decide to write articles and have more interest towards what you are promoting.

Evergreen niches such as health, wealth and weight loss will always be there. If you put out a great product and stick with it, you will succeed. Don't let anybody tell you differently. Work hard on developing a B.S. meter in your mind so you don't get side tracked by "Bright shiny objects"
