Risks of Hiring Freelancers

One issue I'm having right now is that I can't stop editing my site because I keep thinking that I won't have the time nor opportunity to do it once it goes live. Neither do I want to waste time on developing a site that was doomed to fail from the start (I'm not good at it so it takes a lot of time).

So one way to counter that, I thought, is simply to launch my site, and if it works out well I'll use the revenue to fund further devolopment. Now freelancers seem to be the best option for me, as I'm on low budget and I'd probably only need small tweaks.

TL: DR
My question: Is it risky to hire freelancers? Because I assume they need account details of your CMS, host, ftp, database, and you're pretty much giving them out to a stranger across the globe.

There are always risks involved in hiring a freelancer/virtual assistant. You can always use the escrow service of the freelance site to minimize the payment risk. Before hiring someone, make sure to check his/her background and reviews/feedback thoroughly. If you have chance to contact some of his/her costumers, contact them and ask about the person you are about to hire.

    Hi

As in any aspect of business and life there is an element of risk involved in hiring freelancers. But then if you plan properly and set the expectations right I honestly don;t see it going run. After all the model is proven to work given massive websites like odesk and elance thriving for years.

Wish you all the luck with your business

    Cheers

there are lots of good people out there. Usually a common mistake for new people hiring freelancers is they pick the person that is near the cheapest available. There tends to be an average that people charge for different types of development and when someone is too far from this average you may find the offer is too good to be true. Also you might want to think about writing very clear instructions so all the goals are clearly defined before this person starts.

Not too risky if you can choose the trusted one.
There are some freelance marketplace which offers freelancers verifications by phone, video call, even identity.
But it depends on you and their skills to have a 100% satisfaction of a work.

I think on the flip side as you mention, one can become so dependent on freelancers that they get lazy or fail to keep a proper balance sheet. There have been times where I did not properly respond to changes in revenue, so this is something to watch.

The truth is that your website, right now, is worth nothing since, as per your original post, you haven't even launched yet. Any outsourcer will have little interest in exploiting or abusing a site that's so far generated zero income.

I think you might be worrying unnecessarily.

Is it risky? Yes. Can you reduce the risk? Also yes. Can anyway guarantee things will go well? Nope.

Best advise I can give is to do thorough background checks on any freelancer you are considering hiring.
