Buying/selling domain names

I've found some decent unregistered domain names related to big lines of businesses in my local area. No brand names or trade marks, just general business descriptions.

Is there any money in that? What's the best thing to do with a thing like that to make money off it? Put up a super simple article and make money from ads? Sell it to some other company?

Urm...with them being local it's difficult to say. Do these companies already have websites just on different domains?

If they do, you could offer to sell them the domain name if it's better than the one they already have.

If they don't I guess your plan of action could be:

    1) buy it, offer to sell it to them for a profit.

    2) If they say no, you could offer to actually build them a website for their business. To show them what you can do, maybe the build the site, show them how good it is, then offer to sell it to them?

Problem is if they don't buy it you're left with alot of work done with no benefit.

My experience with local companies is that they are not very tech or internet savvy. Unless they feel they are protecting their brand by owning the site they might not be interested. They have to feel they make money or keep their competitors from making money.

Otherwise you might build an adsense site with the domain after checking to see if there is any demand for the related keywords and location of that niche.
For example, if I lived near a university or organization, etc. with a particular popular event drawing lot of traffic, I might create a site based on keywords people use to find out information on that event.
I can not give you any legal advise on trademark matters, you want to be careful. But if the event involved a general term like surfing, you could possibly create an adsense site with a long tail keyword related to the area in question.

For buying and selling, certain types of location specific domains have been hot commodities for the last year or two. Something like "arizonahotels.com" or even more specific cities such as "tucsonazhotels.com" can go for fantastic sums of money.

With that said though, there's quite a lot of experience usually needed to choose good sellers consistently.

Besides selling these types of domains, you can also profit from type in traffic. If you land one which matches a keyword phrase that has a lot of searches each month for example, you might get quite a lot of traffic from people typing their search phrase into the URL box instead of the search box.

Everything else works too though. Putting an article or information page up with affiliate links or ads can work great with type in traffic, but it can work fine without type in if you don't mind pushing some traffic to it. So it pretty much boils down to what you personally want to do

The domains I've found are along these lines. Some of them infact are related to the hotel line of business.

So maybe I could try to collect links and guides on the page together with adsense ads. And once I have some traffic I'll see if someone's interested in it.

EDIT: I'm also thinking in the long run - even though they may not cry out for them today, domain names will probably be even more scarce in a few years and it might be a good investment. Or a gamble rather.

I've been buying and selling domains off and on for about 10 years now and yes I consider them an excellent investment

Dot coms are particularly lucrative. Building a site and traffic has it's pros and cons, and one of the things I like about the domain name industry is that they can sell quite well just on the domain alone - no content or otherwise.

Do search on this forum for Local offline marketing and try to do some online marketing for offline businesses. I think are still a couple of good free WSO's related to doing this as well.

If you know your way around Wordpress you could build local businesses a blog using your domains.

If you find yourself stuck with the domains, you could join affiliate programs like hotels.com and use the domains as affiliate sites.

    Hope that helps
