Is There a market for royalty free music, Before I started learning about IM I used to spend a lot of time making music, I have a large collection of royalty free music samples to produce almost any type of music. I became quite good at it but never thought about selling any of my finished tracks.

Do you think people would pay me say $5 to make them a song in the music genera of their choice? Say for their web site or videos they have on their website. I can have a good quality music track finshed within a few hours?
Just an idea, I really need to start making just a small amount of money while i learn the basics of IM so i can by domains and so on.
What do you guys think?

Yes, there is a market for it. In fact, people need royalty free music if they want to produce videos with music in it and I don't think it's something a lot of people can do so it seems like it would actually be a pretty good venture.

If you look in the WSO section, I think you will see a couple of WSO's for royalty free music - perhaps you should put together some music for a WSO? Might be more profitable than only charging $5 for individual songs?

I would probably create a package of maybe 27 or 47 royalty free tracks and sell that for $47 or so. As cashcow said, it's probably much easier to make money that way.

I can see the sales page now, "47 royalty free tracks for less than $1 each"

You could then offer them a custom service for custom tracks.

I've paid around $39 bucks for a single track in the past (and that wasn't a custom track), so don't cut yourself short at $5 for a custom track.

Royalty free music is usually not sold directly to the customer but through a company who maintains a library. You sell them your music, they get all the rights and put it into their library for others to pay them and use it.

Otoh $5 is very cheap for an original composition so you may have luck doing it on your own.

I've purchased from several of these libraries too, so you may look to selling some tracks through them.

I've used MusicBakery and FreePlayMusic in the past, so just add a .com on the end of those names and that should be the website.

One suggestion I also have is that I would provide multiple lengths of each track. So a 30 second, 45 second, 60 second, 1 minute, etc version of each so they'd fit in short commercials, etc.

One more thought, if you already have a huge library of stuff you created, why not create a membership site and drop most of them in there? Then add some new tracks you created every month to keep people a member.

I know I'd subscribe to a site that gave me access to many clips on a monthly basis instead of having to purchase every track individually.

You can do that relatively cheaply with a wordpress setup and a wordpress membership plugin.

PM me if you want some more detailed help on setting that up.

      samuelbell,

Yes you can make a good income from royalty free music I have been doing it since Umm I think 2006?? I forget really, its not my main focus.

I didn't choose to go the low price per track model.

Also, the method of submitting tracks to the larger sites to sell the tracks for me wasn't really a big income generator.

Most of my sales don't come from my website, but from promoting to music buyers in the production industry.

I gave rights to my tracks to a class in the American Film Institute in LA (AFI) when my friend was doing a lot of work with film makers, (he's an Actor - He's in Promos for TNT Sports, Comedy sketches for FOX, and several Indie films).

When they needed tracks for their projects when they were out of school, I was the only guy they knew that did stuff for them.

MY suggestion would be find a group of people who need music, and many times they won't care if royalties are involved for custom work, I recommend to provide them with royalty free buyout options.

Remember, they are not buying notes or performances, they are buying moods and emotions that your music brings to their projects.
