are you talking about for your own PPC advertising or are you talking about a trigger word on you landing/sales page?

The only way to really know what is a buying keyword and what isn't is to test with PPC. Use a good tracking script like xtreme conversions in conjunction with your landing page or website to see which keywords convert to buyers.

To start with your list of keywords should be large and should include plenty of long tail keywords. Use words like buy, sale, coupon etc appended to the keywords to see if they convert or not.

Is a 'buying' keyword one that somehow (magically) causes people to buy? If so, good luck with that.

    People buy because...
    • They want the claims made for a product
    • They believe the product will deliver the things claimed for it
    • They have the required amount of money
If I've misunderstood what a 'buying' keyword is, I'd be interested in knowing what you meant.

Yes, you did kind of misunderstand. Let me explain...

Here are some of the results from the Adwords keyword tool for "weight loss":

      free weight loss
      quick weight loss diet
      weight loss product
      weight loss stories

Two out of the above keywords are buying keywords whereas the other two are not. Buying keywords are keywords which a person buys when they, most likely, have the intention to buy something. In other words, a buying keyword is a keyword with high commercial intent.

"free weight loss" and "weight loss stories" are not buying keywords because, as you can probably imagine, the people who are searching for these things probably aren't looking to spend any money.

To check for commercial intent (for a keyword or website), try the following tool:

Curtis has summed it up quite well.

Highly specific searches for products and model numbers are also buying keywords - why else would somebody be entering this search phrase unless the were looking to buy. In addition anything with "best" "cheapest" "review" "best quality" "top of the range" etc etc are also buying keywords as these are people looking to spend money.

    Thanks,

    Andy

That tool is a pretty cool tool.

Then, there's some common sense. Key phrases with words such as free, torrents, warez etc won't be buying ones, whereas buy muscle building supplements (*hint*) is one buying keyword.
