Questions re: email marketing services

Hello -

I am looking to build an email list and use a marketing service such as constant contact/icontact/aweber/etc...

Few questions though: I want to send a weekly newsletter. When a company says that I can have 250 contacts at $9.95 monthly does that mean I can send to those 250 people as often as I want (no...not spamming, but looking ahead) or is that just up to 250 emails sent a month?

Also - If I build a list without joining a service FIRST can I import my list without having to have the person sign up again because I moved or went to a service? Trying to be a professional as possible from the start, but don't want to spend money where it's not needed to be spent.

Third: With consideration to price/contacts what is the best solution out there? I will be having advertisers that I push through the email and I would like to give them some sort of reporting on how many sent/opened/etc...

Thanks
Kevin

You need to choose your service provider FIRST and then start building your list, with everyone going through the double opt-in procedure right off the bat.

It's a monumental pain in the rear (for you and for the members of your list) if you try to switch companies.

If you DO switch companies, you need to have your people double opt-in again.

This protects you from being accused of spam, which could possibly lead to the whole operation being shut down. So don't look at double opt-in as a bad thing.

It also keeps your list cleaner.

Even if you decide to go with one company and switch later, don't freak out about losing some members (because there WILL be some people who don't want to jump through your hoops and opt-in again).

Your list will have natural growth and shrinkage anyway, even if it sits with the same service provider forever.

Some people come. Some go. Doesn't mean your list is in bad shape unless you have a huge exodus for some reason, and then you would need to investigate and figure out what's wrong so you can solve that problem.

I've heard of people with fairly small lists making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year -- even millions.
