How much it will cost to make an E-commerce site?

Hey guys,
i am working in online from last 4 years and i am doing good.Now i am just thinking of to make an e-commerce site and make some money from it. I don't have any idea how much it will cost to make an e-commerce site and how to be successful on it.If anyone has experience and has some positive result then i will appreciate it if you share with me.

      I agree with Adie and some times costing depend on CMS which you are going to choose for your E-commerce site.

    I used wponlinestore on one of my Wordpress blogs - it does more than I need, looks good and best of all, it was free!
    Easy to set up and works with most payment providers including PayPal.

    The Woocommerce plugin is free and Woo has some free ecommerce themes. They have a lot of great extensions that you can buy to do different things with a store. Once you buy the extensions you want, that's it for the cost of a Woocommerce store. There are no monthly fees, and I like that. I have Woocommerce stores with thousands of products in them.

    Of you only have a few products, I recommend you to build it yourself using wordpress or opencart. It's easier and cheaper, you only need to buy a domain, shared hosting account, and maybe a cheap logo design service. It can cost you about $25 assuming you are ordering logo design in fiverr of course.

    Starting your e-commerce site is not that hard, you can start with minimum to maximum investment, depending on your strategies. If you are willing to start with free or minimum, then pick free themes, hosting etc etc. But for marketing you have to spend money.

    I believe that nothing good is free. Free solutions may work more or less well at first. But at some point you will face some problems, e.g. slow loading times, or you will need a feature which is not supported by free platform. So, I would recommend you to choose a website building solution with flexible payment system and nice customization options so that you can gradually adjust your website to your needs and budget.

    As far as I know an average price for running a simple ecommerce site is about $10-30 per month, you can find lots of offers if you google it. I'm personally a fan of getsocio.com which is a ready-made customizable platform for building ecommerce sites. With this application you can build your website and use it for 2 weeks for free and then you can pay $15 per month (+ a transaction fee when you sell something). This fee includes hosting and all main features needed to run your site.

      I disagree with this. Security issues alone make me question this.

      First you have to ask yourself, what you are selling, and what functionality do you need? How much do you want to deal with security, upgrades and your servers?

      Different carts offer different functionality so making a list of functionality you need is key. Is it fairly niche without lots of categories and sub-categories? Shopify is a great platform. Need more categories, sub-categories, third party integrations and ease of use? BigCommerce is a good choice. Need to to recurring billing, well then check out Americommerce. Want the ease of use of BigCommerce but want more control of look and feel? Corecommerce might be a good answer.

      Want to go open source? Opencart and Prestashop are great additions, run on PHP, are light weight enough to use on. Want to go with the big boys, Magento CE you can play with. All have pre made themes from theme forest.

      Every single cart/service I have mentioned is designed for e-commerce from the ground up, are either PCI-DSS compliant or PCI certified and will allow you to grow your business. Many have a strong ecosystem of providers designing products for increasing sales and are SEO optimized.

      Realize, you will have different needs. I wouldn't use cheap shared hosting, get yourself a little bit better host with a bit better hardware. It won't cost you more but someone won't be getting fat affiliate fee. You may or may not need a SSL certificate and a dedicated IP address.

      As much as I like wordpress I would not use it as a e-commerce platform except in certain circumstances. But what I would do is add it on as a subdomain for blogging and SEO purposes.
