How do you exploit broad keywords

Have you ever pay for general keywords like "money", or "house"? I've been targeting those keywords but with no good results. I wonder why does people search for the word "house" not "buy house"? Why does general keywords have more people searching for them?

  • General people do not take much effort on thinking what might be the best search term. They do what´s easy. On the websites they arrive at they see more specific terms, terms they could not come up with themselves, and use those for their next search.

I don't think that you should try to exploit broad keywords such as house and money for 2 reasons:

      1) there's far too many web sites to compete with - the more broad a keyword is the more competition I would expect.

Competition is good because it then shows that it must be a profitable area otherwise why would so many web sites be competing for it. However, too much competition and it will be far too difficult to get yourself noticed, especially if competing with big names.

      2) you cannot tell what a person wants if they use a broad keyword. For example, someone searching for house may be looking for home furnishings, buying and selling a house, decorating.

If your site is about house decorating and you attract people wanting to buy and sell houses then you will not make any money.

Make the keywords more narrow - less competition and you know what the person wants.

In small PPC network that I use, there are little competition for the advertisers. But although competition is low, but the traffic does not convert well.

if the search query just happens to contain the word house, you are targeting that search. Way too broad.
    For example:

fix the roof on my house
    landscaping my house
    sell my house
    3 bedroom house
    good house pets
    house of horrors
    fun house
    house party in Detroit

See? every one of these people are searching for something different but if you were to target just "house" there is no way you could have just one site that would interest all these searchers.

What if I use the "house" keyword to promote stock product? I think that most people who search for "house" must have money, and they might need info on "stock investing". So the ads will be "Want to try stock investing? Get free info here".

For an authroity site, you SHOULD be always targeting broad keywords on your main page.

Afterall that is what your site is about.

I do this and it's nice watching from webmaster tools your site is rising to the top, for those big broad keywords.

Unless you target the key word to the result you want, you will never get the CONVERSION you are looking for, as your keyword is not looking for your customer. Your house keyword could be anything to do with houses. Wisebuddy pretty much said it right on target. Most of the traffic you are receiving has no interest in what you have to offer when they get to your site, is my guess. So, target your key words to the action you are wanting from your visitor and you will get much better results.
