Diversify Your IM Marketing Strategy

People in recent years that use Social Media for traffic have had a laugh at the expense of all of those that used Google as a main source of traffic. It appears that the laughing has ended. Facebook had a update the first week of December that has brought many users to their knees. In some cases there is 80% traffic loss. From what I'm reading the average seems to be in the 40% range.

Sounds like the effect of Googles Penguin or Panda update doesn't it?

Looking to the future, we need do nothing more than look to the past. I personally call these "Cleaning cycles" It happens across most, if not all platforms from time to time. I have a feeling 2014 may be the year for a lot of cleaning in social media.

Very clearly with the google updates, the cleaning process was to separate the White from Black ( White Hat / Black Hat ) I have a feeling the same thing has been done with FB. If you have been in IM for any amount of time, you understand the difference.

Understanding what more than likely is coming, what are you going to do? My answer to this question is to Diversify. I have always diversified, not only what I do online IE e-bay, etsy, my own site, site development, offline etc... but how I get traffic online. I actually use offline methods to get online traffic as well.

If you have been affected by the FB update, I will bet your initial reaction is to go back to twitter and explore G+. My suggestion is to diversify across as many social media options as possible to maintain some amount of LONG TERM stability. The reality is, all the options for social media are the same as far as marketing is concerned. Reaching out and contacting potential customers. Regardless of the form the connection takes place as, the Content of that connection remains the same.

To further the concept of longevity in the diversification process one thing to consider is the methods use to build your traffic. There are 2 methods, as stated before there is White Hat, and Black Hat. I personally have a face book page with 4000ish followers and over the last month have grown by about 5%. I never paid for likes, or traffic, it was all organic. It was White Hat.

I research extensively to figure out the white hat options on every marketing option I undertake. This obsession has paid off very well for me over the last 19 years. Yes, white hat takes longer, sometime brutally long ( haha ) but in the long run it pays off.

Regardless of the paths we take just remember content, is the ultimate solution. Both long term growth and short term bursting depend on the content we share. Its completely dependent on who's, and how we share it!

Hope that Helps!
