Newbie looking for the right place to start

In short: I have been working with an SEO company for almost a year now. I have learned a lot and have a lot more book knowledge of things I have taken initiative to study on my spare time.

Now I am ready to go all in. I want to test out some CRO, SEO, marketing channels, email marketing, the whole shabang. Problem is I don't have my own website. Everything I work with now is my clients sites which I restricted access to.

So my question is: Where is a good place to start in getting my own website that I can market and test with to learn from? I just don't know where to start.

And some other question on my mind if you would feel so obliged: Are there some good complied lists of resources for new marketers to the forum? How did you get your start in online marketing? What do you enjoy the most about your work?

Start with a reliable hosting company.
Get your domain situated and preferrably a
    Wordpress-type site set up.

It doesn't have to be Wordpress, but many
of these hosting services will give you that
    ability.

If first spending on hosting costs is not
feasible yet, at least consider a free blogging site.
You'll still be able to apply your SEO knowledge.

      Hey Kevin,

I have a hosting account and have built one basic wordpress site in the past. I can get a domain and set it up, I just have no idea what to do it about. The only thing on my mind for the last year has been learning marketing, and I am still very new at that. So I can't see myself getting into the online marketing blog world with much success over people who have years of experience.

That being said I am not sure what topic I could develop a site about. How to choose a niche and start generating content on the site.

Don't think into it too much. You already have your
feet wet in what many don't yet - marketing.

As far as your niche goes, pick the niche that
you're good at. You're an expert at something.
There's a market for almost anything out there.
Keep the site relevant to that niche and then
monetize it with relevant products/affiliate links/etc.

Do you think there is a market out there to start with the very basics of marketing and internet marketing? Starting a blog about basic principles of marketing and the overview of various niches of online marketing without being an expert on the topic?

I know I could generate good content about marketing because I study it daily and have for almost a year. But my worry is being weeded out by all the experts in the community as not being experienced enough

All you need to do is register a domain from a site like luckyregister.com or namecheap.com ($8-10) then purchase a hosting account (hostgator) for a penny for the first month. Then you need to upload content to your site. The you will have your own internet property.

How to choose a niche and start generating content on the site.
That's the $64,000 question that everyone wants to know the answer to.

I suggest looking for small niches you can easily dominate, at the start. Don't listen to people who will tell you to jump in to health, wealth and relationships. Newbies who try to compete in super-competitive niches generally become failure stories.

You will find that a lot of the work you do is research. Time to get started. Go to odigger.com and look through recently added products. Get on Clickbank's new product alert list. When you find something that looks promising, go to Google and find out what sites are already there. If the niche is poorly represented, or if you think you can do better than the existing sites, you might be on to something. If the niche is well represented, research the next one.

While you are doing this you will start to get an idea how it all works.

  • Sometimes you have to be prepared to be bad at something in order to get good at it. Its advice I received from a very clever man I used to know but all too often wimp out and don't realise the potential of an opportunity.

If you aren't willing to give it a go for fear of being dampened by the 'experts' then that is exactly what will happen. Give it a go, launch your blog and see how it goes and if you've been researching marketing then there is a good chance you have compelling ideas to share.

You could even carry out tests and demonstrate how they compared in practice (when this doesn't break the rules such as with Adsense where it isn't allowed.)

If it was good enough then surely some of the members here would show an interest?

I have my blog set up (mainly to mess around and try out different things) for something like $20 pa with 2 domains attached and I am sure you could do it cheaper but I got a recommendation off another forum and haven't been disappointed.

The answer to your question is WITHIN YOU. Your not going to get the answer to "Where do I begin?" here or anywhere else. Think about the clients you are working with right NOW. They are in it to win it, they are paying to have you give them more traffic to make more money. How many hours a day do you think those people work? Now imagine being in their shoes, and also doing what you do for them, for your self.

Branding yourself is TIME CONSUMING. Its a full time job and then some. Its not just the site, its the social media, its the product creation, its getting new clients, its just plain constant.

Knowing that.. ask your self... What is it I LOVE? Just look at the time you will be spending on this... you had better love it. No sense spending all that time with something that you don't like. That to me would be like getting kicked in the nuts once an hour on the hour 24hours a day. It would flat out SUCK!

You really want a service provider that can 2 things for you. You kinda want to use wordpress. However I suggest using that for a BLOG only. Develop a front end static site, that is going to give you more flexability in using your SEO skills. I am sure you understand the importance of cross linking the 2 elements between each other.

Like Gary Vaynerchuk says "If Smurfs are what you are into, Smurf it up!" Regardless of what YOUR passion is roll with it. Passion and your experience WILL BE successful!

A side note.. DONT QUITE your day job. Work on YOUR thing in the evenings to start. Develop it, grow it, get it to a point where you can then take it on full time.

      Hope that Helps!

The first question to ask what exactly you want to do, do you want to do blogging of the products or do you want to do just normal blogging and make money from Google Adsense or do you want to start with building email list.

See all the depends on what you want to do.

if you want build list then you need the following things

    1. Get your Domain from Godaddy, there is $1 coupon code just search on Goolge you will get it

    2. Make up your mind what do you want to promote from these three board category. Business, Health or Lifestyle

    3. If you are good in promoting online business product then know that product very well and make a lead capture which you ask for only email address no point for full name.

    4. Make a lead capture page with only Email address, put down all the mains points of the product and mention What Your Visitor Will Get If They Provide the Email Address and What Benefit they will Get from Your Lead Capture Page.

    5. Join up a Autoresponder Like GVO, Aweber, Rocketresponder and so on. I like GVO one.

    6. Start capturing people emails in your Autoresponder

    7. Make up some follow up message at lest for 30 days for every 2 days gap between each mail.

    8. Promote 3 follow up promotion email first then 3 free information then go like that

    9. Split test everything, heading, email, open rate and so on

Actually start it and you will learn it yourself when you begin it, it is little boring in first but when you get results you will enjoy it promoting.

First goal is to get that first subscriber in your Autoresponder, rest you know what to do from there.

If you want to do review based website, than follow this process..

    1. Pick up your niche from Business, Health and Lifestyle. Get the converting affiliate product from clickbank or another place where you are comfortable.

    2. Buy a good short domain name, short domain name not so important if you get it, it is good.

    3. Join with Good Hosting company like GVO

    4. Add Wordpress on your domain. Very important one is learn little bit of wordpress like how to install it, how to install plugins and so on

    5. Install these plugins. Wordpress SEO, Akismet, Google Analytic and Pretty Links

Wordpress SEO - To make your website properly optimize with Google
Akismet - To block spam comments if you open up blog commenting. I usually disable comment cause no point people commenting on review website, my main focus is to click the affiliate link
Google Analytic - To track how many visitors you are getting on website.

These all plugins you will find out in wordpress itself in feature section when you install it and important one, if you install more plugins, more your website will be slower in loading.

    6. Write good quality article and keeping in mind that you are helping your search user if you are totally focusing search engine traffic

    7. Make sure you have at least 5 quality content

    8. Make sure in your Title of each content keyword is available and it meta description as well.

    9. Make sure you pling your website in plinger.com so the search engine will know it faster.

These are few ways to start business online and there are many ways to start business online, it ALL depends on you that from where do you want to START

the reply is too big anyway, but if you read it full then you have will get some basic understanding from where to start

I think I will stop here and not to blombard you with many information, start it and then keep on asking question here and we are ready to help you to succeed

I hope you got your answers

    Thanks

First of all, you need a big enough why. You need to have a gun to your head so as not to become a dabbler. Then you need to understand classic marketing principles of:
      • How to get the opt in
      • How to get them into your marketing funnel
      • Convert leads to sales
      • Offer insanely good value
      • Upsell to profit saturation
      • Rinse and repeat
      Buddy

PS Did I say offer insanely good value? Oh yeah, I did.

read warrior forum, get ideas and implement them.

Most people in here get stuck in here reading, and never get to the ideas and implementation part.

Of those that do take action, it would be about 1% of people reading this, so make sure you are in that 1%

There I made it simple. so what are you still doing in here reading? yes? get ....arse....to....work!

Learn the basics in an organized manor before doing anything and you will save years of floundering and buying courses trying to piece it all together:

    1. How to get organized and set goals
    2. How set up and run a Home Based business so your taxes are done right
    3. How Direct Marketing works
    4. Keyword / Niche Research
    5. Domain Registration and Hosting
    6. HTML or Wordpress (preferably both)
    7. Simple graphics design or find a good place to outsource it
    8. Copyrighting
    9. Legal requirements for your website
    10. How to do presentations and screen captures / video marketing
    11. How to use the Social Media sites for relationship building and traffic
    12. Affiliate Marketing / link shortening / cloaking
    13. How to setup a sales funnel (give away, sell something small, OTO's, etc.)
    14. Learn your autoresponder, how to structure an opt-in / sales page
    15. Learn about the different traffic methods
    16. Know what you are good at and how to outsource the rest

OR - you can dabble in promoting others affiliate products from Clickbank, JVZoo, Commission Junction or Amazon.

The important milestones you need to achieve are:

    1. Have a method of capturing email addresses in exchange for something of value. to do this you need a domain name, hosting, knowledge of HTML or Wordpress, and an Autoresponder (along with the tools to make your PDF). If you want Affiliate links in your book, you need more of the knowledge above)

    2. Once you have the emails, you must have a way to create and provide more valuable content on a regular basis (a Blog, Social Media or emails using your Autoresponder)

    3. Sell something (either your own product via another webpage or Affiliate offers)

It may seem crazy to learn all of the things above first, but if you don't you will get only a piece of the knowledge at a time by buying products and trying to put the puzzle together.

One last thing: In order to really learn it, you will need to take massive organized ACTION. When you hit a roadblock, work your way through it and learn what you need to. Don't be tempted to grab the next shinny object looking for something easier.

Hopefully this helps. Design your funnel first and then start creating.

I really appreciate how you have broken down the steps. Thank you.

I feel like I have a good start with many of those things but not a concrete knowledge in any of them. Could you suggest some action step to learning more of these things?

I have read a lot of the books, I keep up to date with the major blogs, and I have access to a lot of video trainings and courses. But without a website to apply a lot of this stuff I feel like it's just a bunch of text book knowledge

You've already received some excellent answers.

I would just add that you need to be highly-selective when it comes to choosing a domain registrar and a hosting company.

Before choosing either, ensure that you read some honest reviews. These can always be found on places like WF, where the reviews are not biased.

Lots of great advice, but let's try and simplify - don't forget the basics of business...you put a product or service that someone wants badly in front of them and give them every reason to buy.

First step is finding the desire you will target.

Everyone talks about niche markets - to someone starting out that means nothing, but what I have found useful is to think of niches in terms of problems or desires that people have - makes it easier to tackle.

For example, on the front of this forum this morning alone I see some...

    1. How to get the first 1000 visitors to your new blog in 3-days or less - people want this badly and will pay if you have the solution
    2. How to double the conversion rate of email marketing campaigns - if you can offer a solution, people will buy
    3. How you can get a dozen reviews for your ebook in 1-week - again this is a common area that gets many requests and stands in the way of a group of people realizing their goal of launching and making money with their ebook

Same approach can be used in any market - dig into forums, blogs, top magazine articles or books on amazon (asking what question or desire do they target), etc...

It all starts with finding a desire and then constructing a differentiated solution - from there operationalizing your business and marketing kick in, but not before.

Best advice I can give you is to have your own website. When other people have control of your content, that is when you want to run as fast as you can.

When you do get your own website, I would not even focus on SEO because it is a waste of time and you never know when good old Google will slap your website and have all your content GONE from its first 100 pages.

You MUST learn how to market online and never put all your eggs in ONE single basket.

Paid ads also work well and you should learn more about that too.
