Self hosted autoresponder question

I'm using a self hosted autoresponder that allows installation on one domain. The issue is that when I copy and paste the optin form code into a page with a separate domain, any links that are in my emails shows the domain of the site that the autoresponder is hosted on and not the domain that I placed the code on.

This isn't a real big issue but if a subscriber manages their subscription the link will take them to the domain that the autoresponder is hosted on which may cause confusion and if someone hovers over the links in my emails or news letters it shows the domain the domain where the autoresponder is hosted which also may cause confusion.

Is there a way around this? I have considered registering a generic domain just to host the autoresponder on.

Depends what autoresponder you use. On mine, I can edit stuff you mentioned in the .cgi file, so it can show whatever domain or sender email.

But why don't you just install it on each domain you plan to use it for? Thats a solution also. So you keep your leads separated by domain/niche.

I'm currently using the free version of Wysija "mail poet" which only allows installation on one domain. If I deem list building profitable I will purchase Interspire which will be a one domain install as well. Later I may upgrade to multiple domain.

I can change the sent from and sent to, to show the domain of the site that the optin form is hosted on but any links in my email or newsletter will show the domain that the autoresponder software is on.

The unsubscribe link will always point to the domain where the autoresponder is hosted, I don't think you can change that.

With cloaking / meta refresh you can make it appear / display the domain url of the niche instead of the domain on which you have your autoresponder.

Steve Y. has it right. People generally don't care much if the AR link is different than the domain hosting the form. Credit Aweber and their cousins for making that a non-issue.

Now, if the domain hosting the script is something that would put up a red flag for people (your form is on a site about antique cars, but the the AR is hosted on HowToScamPeopleByEmail.org) you might have a problem.

I've gone the generic domain route also, and had no problems. I have a license to install my software on as many domains as I choose, but I choose to keep it on one because the back office stuff (admin, security, keeping in the good graces of ISPs, etc.) is easier to manage on a single site.

Would you mind sharing what self hosted AR you are using?

I've been using ListMail Pro since it came out. Haven't found a reason to switch yet.

Well, I decided to purchase ArpReach and have installed it and now going over all the features of this software program. There are a lot of features and everything in the control panel is setup very neat and clean.

I had a little hiccup on installation, but support suggested a workaround and so far it seems to be working. I will set up a test autoresponder to make sure everything is setup correctly.

Wish I didn't wait 4 years to decide to start building a list

That's what I have done in the past. I've kept it on a separate server to the rest of my sites as well. That way, if my main server goes down, I can still contact customers by e-mail (and vice versa). I don't think people pay too much attention to the domain in the unsubscribe links anayway.

Why do you want to change this as all autoresponders point to where they are installed.

Heck, Aweber in text messages show the Aweber url right in any link you add to your message.

I have used self hosted autoresponders for over 11 years. Showing the url of the autoresponder is not a problem at all. But what can be a problem is if you have your autoresponder installed on a shared host.

If your autoresponder slowes the server down, your host will shut you down.

I hope this has been helpfull,

Yes it does have many great features. This is all new to me so It will take some time to learn everything. I'm excited though, since I'm in the process of writing a book and I will build up my email list so when it gets published I will have a list to send out a blast too.
