Secure-Digital Product Delivery-I need opinions/advice

Thanks in advance for the all the great advice I know I'll receive.

I'm setting up my first optin and autoresponder. In exchange for opting in to email list - I'll be giving them a free ebook. I need to know the most hands off, secure way of delivering the ebook to them.

I know of two products that seem to apply to what I'm after...DLGuard and My Digital Download. Are there more that I should be aware of? Is there a solution out there that's much easier and doesn't cost as much as these products?

Also, I haven't yet signed up for the autoresponder service, so they might provide a service that I'm not aware of that would give me what I need.

Comments, questions...your input greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

    Hi gotteeth.

What I would advise is sign up for aweber, or if you have an email list in another service then that's fine. Create your opt in box offering the free ebook. Then, create your campaign. Make sure the first message for that particular box contains a download link to a page in your site where they can download the free ebook.

I think this is what you're after? So, I hope it clears things up

I give the download link in the email a (Save Target as) in the email following confirmation.
That link doesn't go to a page but is the actual link it's self. This way nobody can find the page and get anything from you without confirming your email. Especially if you don't call the downloadable file an obvious name

Just the plan I use but there may well be better

Only if you want to make sure you get the opt-in information. The opt-in is a form of payment, so the idea is to make sure you get "paid" for as many copies as possible.

Then the only people that can steal your "free" ebook, are those who share that link with others (and the ones that they share it with, and the ones that...)

The URL to a zip file can be shared as easily as any other URL. In fact, the email with the link becomes the sharing mechanism. All anyone has to do is forward the email (perhaps to their entire address book?)

I could be wrong, but I think the OP was looking for something more secure than these options

e-junkie provides download security as does the 7 Dollar Script.

IncanSoft also sells a download protection product, or did, at least.

Nice input. But to be fair, if your ebook is going to get shared, it's going to get shared. There's always ways around it unfortunately. You could put a password on the ebook but then people forget passwords and that results in you doing more work. Also, people will share passwords anyway. If someone wants to download something for free, they will download something for free.

So, you can take advantage of this by including regular links to your website through the ebook. Or include other products they can buy. Use the sharer's as free advertising.

You can't help it, it is always going to be given away illegally some where. Take advantage yourself. If it means you get a paying customer down the line then so be it.

Here's another tip: For all your download pages, make sure you set them so they are not indexed by Google. That way someone can't do a search for "(yourproductname) download page", etc.

To do this, add the following code inside the <head> tags of the download page:

    <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

As long as your ebook is free you don't have to worry about theft, but.. You can go a step further and make your ebook viral so, even if somebody take it, you'll have a gain from it and not a loss (and you don't have to waste money protecting it hard)
    Hope this help.

So there is only one answer IMHO opinion

    DownloadGuard & Aweber

Sam (of DLG) is just INCREDIBLE. Search his name and rep on the board - he is a rock star of epic proportion.

    Just my 2 cents

I use DLGuard (dlguard.com)... it's great and gets my vote. An alternative that I found (but have not personally used) is Product Lockdown (productlockdown.com).

Ok, so if I've read this right, it's a free ebook.

Do you have a list builder software/autoresponder system? if so which one?

If it's aweber/getresponse/ or even in house generic, whatever, then there is no problem, you don't need a download protection script at all, your autoresponder will be the system that sends your prospects to your download for the free ebook.

If you have cpanel hosting set up a password protected directory where your ebook can be downloaded from.
In your autoresponder tell the sign ups where to go to download

    i.e. http://www.yourwebsiteaddress.com/pr.../downloadfile/

Give them the username and the password you set up for the protected directory in the email you send to them, and only those that get the link with the password and username will be able to access the download link. (what they do with the report after that, you have no control of, not even if you are using a download protection script! once it's in their grasp, you've lost control.)

Don't make it any more complicated than it needs to be, and you most certainly don't need a protection script for a free ebook.
Oh, and make sure the free ebook is viral, at least then those that pass it around still get back to you and your offerings through the links.

If it is free, you would want more people to have access to it. I assume that you have monetised the ebook with a lot of either affiliate links or links to your own products.

Also, you can get everyone who gets the ebook to register again to another list for free upgrades... this way you will build a list of people who didn't optin in the first place.
