Mentors: How to find one and what to expect?

Hey Everyone,

New to IM and I've never had a mentor or a coach. Don't know where to start but looking at any successful person's track record it seems I will need lots of help along the way.

Where does one find a mentor or coach? How do you select the best one? Do you interview someone or do they interview you or both? What is the typical fincial compensation for these things? What have your experiences been with either?

WOW! I just responded to this question from someone else, and in that response I said that I am surprised how often this question is asked.

Do your research and look around at what business model you are interested in - are you looking to be an affiliate marketer? sell Kindle books? sell your own products? etc.

Are you looking for someone who is successful so you can build a similar business and kind of use their method as an example, or are you looking to pay big bucks for 'mentoring'?

I've had folks offer to coach me for $500 - $5,000. I have never paid for anything like that. I'm just very skeptical of it.

You'll find many such mentors right here on WF.

The key is to decide on your niche and determine the local authority figures. A simple approach then is just to approach them and ask for help.

Some will require payment; others still will ask for a joint venture; others still, will lend a hand without asking for payment of any kind.

I would recommend, however, simply going it alone before you resort to mentoring. Places like WF have heaps of helpful information - and it's free (if we exclude the WSOs from this).

I would be very careful before paying serious money to a coach or mentor. I would try to find other members from the coach's thread and PM them for feedback. I know from experience that there are good mentor's on WF but you have to dig a little and keep your eyes open.

    Hi,

Great to see you are at least looking to invest in yourself and your future.

    That's a good start.

Having a mentor takes away most of the roadblocks and pitfalls that we
are all inevitably going to see at some stage in our careers.

A mentor is someone who will guide you to success a lot faster rather
than hoping for the best through trial and error learning.

You are in the right place to find one that suits your needs, time
    and budget.

    Have a great day
    Gavin

While it's true there is a ton of info out there, all available for free, it can be very overwhelming to truck through them on your own, without having a viable plan to follow.

Some people can do it, though, on their own. Personally, I needed someone to hold me by the hand and walk me through an already successful model.

First you need to work out what niche you want to operate on. Then you need to know what kind of business model interests you. Then it is a case of discovering a mentor who you gel with. Before making a decision I would sign up to that persons list and get a feel for how they communicate. Plenty of people on this forum who coach.

I paid my mentor $1000 for an actual product, but he never gave up on me. In short, expect to pay some money to get real help from someone. If you have plans on wasting time, questioning concept, and not implementing anything.... then at least they got their money. You can lead a horse to a well, but you cant make it drink.

The internet marketing world may seem simple, but can be very tricky! When I was first starting out I had no clue but a burning desire to succeed. I would stay online searching for answers all day and I found a ton of great information. The problem with that is, that you are taking advise from the crowd and not from certain individuals who have made it. So in order to cut the learning curve in half, I would suggest get a mentor. Find a mentor that you resinate with and that you believe is there to genuinely help you out and not make a quick buck. Now there are MANY mentors. You can get 1 on 1 training but that is always more expensive, if not there are coaching programs that offer great help as well. Good luck in your internet business!

First of all, as others have said or will say, you don't need a mentor, a lot of information can be found in guides, books and even for free right here.

However, a good mentor will accelerate your earnings, reduce the chance of mistakes and let you know that you're doing everything right.

What to expect depends entirely on their program. Everyone has a different way of doing things, some like weekly 1 on 1 meetings, others group meetings, others just like Email correspondence.

My suggestion is to decide which business model suits you best and to go with a mentor who uses that model for their own business. Also select a mentor that has a program that suits you.

However, I must stress that no mentor has a magic wand and ultimately you will be responsible for your own success. A great mentor will give you great advice, but you will have to action that advice.

      Best wishes,

      Nick

well, I really respect your question and I appreciate you asking this as a newbie...

Having a mentor impacts your success majorly (of course I don't mean here that he will do a magic and you will not do anything and things will happen)...

You gotta work your ass off to be a real success in any business you join or do but THE RIGHT DIRECTION is everything...and that's where your mentor's role is critical.

I joined internet marketing a year back and was totally lost with a stuck team...probably because I was stuck myself from inside. so I invested my time and resources in my personal development as well in my IM education and finally I decided to join the company's top earner directly...

People who are at the top surely have something awesome in them, that's why they are there...and I am experiencing awesomeness...

I would suggest you to read a few good books (success literature) and do the same if you like...Follow the most successful people in your business whatever it is...model them...you will find the clues and reasons for their success and your guidance

    Recommended books for you:
    1. The Science of Getting Rich
    2. Think and Grow Rich...

If you would like to know about my mentor, send me a personal message...I will guide you through...you can watch a lot of free great training with him...NO PITCH

    Good LUCK

Good tips. Also, a scammer will invite you to join course after course to take maximum money from you. Beware of that too.

#2 above - excellent point. Be aware that Paypal does not offer Buyer Protection for non-tangible goods - i.e. coaching and digital goods. Also, you have only 45 days to dispute a transaction (which they say you can do with a non-tangible item, but they also say they are not likely to side with you because non-tangible items aren't covered )

Please be careful paying someone for coaching, which is non-tangible and likely to go on for more than 45 days. By the time you have an issue with the coaching you have received you would likely be past this timeline. Beware if a 'coach' only accepts Paypal. Many feel more comfortable paying with Paypal than giving some stranger their credit card info, so just know your options for dispute and protection - ie none.

      Just FYI.

Generally, I would say there are two paths:

    1. You have money for this and want to pay someone for mentoring you.

In this case, question everything they do and be unapologetic about it. Ask why they are the mentor for you, ask what they can do for you, ask what makes them great.

    2. You want to get a free mentor

This is a lot more difficult and involves much sniffing around and reaching out to people. The things I found works best is if someone doesn't even know that they are your mentor.

For instance, asking "hey, do you want to be my mentor?" can often get you a negative answer. But just emailing the person casually every once in a while (if they are receptive and respond) asking various questions and asking for advice can have a lot better success factor.

As some others have said, find someone who is currently successful in exactly what you are trying to do. Emphasis on "currently" and "exactly."

Always verify their success. They should be able to show you their most noteworthy projects. The vast majority of people offering coaching will attempt to dodge this because they don't have anything of substance to show you. When it happens, walk away. Don't accept excuses ("We took it offline.") or vague answers ("It's promoted through PPC campaigns, so nothing to show"). Walk away.

A good coach or mentor can make all the difference in the results you are currently getting. The reason - you are a lot more focused with a mentor. So instead of jumping on every opportunity that comes up, you will make progress more speedily.

Just make sure you do your homework before investing in a coaching or mentorship program. You can check out some sample training materials first or go on some free webinar calls to see if you'll be comfortable working with the coach. Always tons of good stuff lying around. Also, take this as a good opportunity to see if what the coach has to teach is something that you will enjoy doing.

The best coaches I see online expect you to go on coaching calls about once a week. Then you go do some work, and next week you check back with the coach again. So check with the coach what's the time required of you to be on the program. No point signing up for the program and then not doing the work and not making it to the calls.

    Hope that helps.

Find somebody that can show you step by step that you resinate with. Finding a mentor can cut the learning curve in half if you find a reputable one. There are many great coaching programs out today too. Finding a coach that will work with you 1 on 1 is more expensive so be prepared to have a nice chunk of money for private coaching. One thing's for sure, you must be coachable and willing to learn and take action! People can show you the tricks all day long, but you must put in the the work yourself or you will never see results.

Through my journey and personal experience the way I approached acquiring a mentor was to do my research and find out who is the best of the best in regards to the skill set that I wanted to learn then I would see what kind of financial costs are involved and whatnot and act accordingly based upon my own situation.

I usually do the necessary research to ensure that before I invest in a particular "course" that the source is credible, trustworthy, and reputable, and I stick with that one source until I myself have made whatever business model it is I am trying to adopt work for me.

Even for someone that is on a shoestring budget, if you know where and how to look in the right places online for the Information that you seek, you can still acquire a somewhat almost free yet "quality" Internet marketing education hence WarriorForum for instance.

Most important variable to help you determine whether you would like to follow a particular "mentor" is their proven track record, well in my opinion it is anyway.

    Welcome and all the best!

I think it's best to just go at it by yourself and not to get any mentoring or coaching. You would learn much more when your on a boat by yourself rather than having someone manning the sails for you.

Having a mentor is critical for your success if your just starting out !

Save yourself the frustration of trying to learn everything yourself and the money spent in doing so and find a mentor who will give you focus and accountability on one strategy to get results, once you master this then you will be moved onto the next and so on.

This was the difference for me which took my yearly salary and turned it into my monthly.
