Royalty free images question

Hey,

When you buy royalty free pictures, do you still have to credit the photographer. I'm using uk.photos. On the home page it says buy pics and use them on your blog website, etc. but do you still need to credit the photographer? Or when you but royalty images are you good to go.

So because you've bought them, that's permission to start displaying them?

Sorry I'm still learning about this stuff

Thanks!

  • Every website that you buy images from has their own different terms. (read them). Also, every image, depending on the license you bought, has its own terms as well. You should never purchase / use an image without knowing the license terms. No one here will be able to know the terms of the image(s) you purchased, without having read them.

Exactly. There should be an easy to find rights declaration attached to each image on the site.

You are asking the right question: don't mess with this. Horror stories abound.

Using royalty free images is a real hassle. License terms vary and you are often not 100% sure you have it right.

I think it's better to get images from big companies/sites when they have a special offer etc and then you know you can use them without attribution. This doesn't have to be expensive - it can even be free.
    I use:
    Deposit Photos - From $0.72
    Fotalia – From $0.80
Big Stock Photos – From $Free

How is Big Stock "From $free"?

They have a free trial for 7 days and you can download 5 images a day. They state you can cancel any time, so they are hoping you will continue and pay monthly, but if you don't they are saying that is OK.

Better than (free) royalty free - which is a pain.

Thank you. But big stock say they are royalty free too?

You have some good answers here, but one thing puzzles me.

Why are so many people so reluctant to give a photo credit when using an image? I don't get it. What's the big deal?

If you're still worried about "leaking link juice", just hit it with a 'no index, no follow' tag. If you're paranoid that your content isn't good enough to keep people on your site, open the link in a new tab/window.

Many licenses don't even require a live link for credit. There's absolutely nothing about adding (Photo credit: JoesBlog.com) somewhere that I see as objectionable.

So I ask again, what's the big deal?

I always credit the photographer. Why not?

Let's remember that not all "stock picture" stores describe their attribution requirements as "a need to link to the source." Sometimes, it's okay just to mention the source.

For instance, when I get free CC pictures from Flickr, I don't publish a live link to the source. The CC rules say that I have to "give attribution," and not explicitly that I have to "link out." So what I do is just publish the URL of the source without making it a live link. The attribution is still there.

But a general rule indeed is to read the guidelines carefully.

  • As mentioned in my previous post, your answer depends on the site's terms.

I did some snooping, and according to the site you mentioned, the related terms look like this...

Photos.com - Stock Photo Licensing Information

4.3 Photo Credit. All Licensed Material used in an editorial context, must include the following credit line adjacent to the Licensed Material: "[Photographer's Name]/[Collection Name]/Photo's.com" or as otherwise shown on the Photos.com website. If Licensee omits the credit, an additional fee in an amount up to one hundred percent (100%) of the Licence Fee may be payable by Licensee, at Photos.com's sole discretion. The foregoing fee shall be in addition to any other rights or remedies that Photos.com may have at law or in equity.

4.4 Audio/Visual Production Credit. If Licensed Material is used in an audio/visual production in either an editorial context or a non-editorial context but where credits are accorded to other providers of licensed material, credit shall be accorded, where technically feasible, in equal size and comparable placement to such other credit(s), substantially in the following form: "[Video] [Imagery] supplied by [Collection Name]/Photos.com".

One of my favourite sources for blogs is Free Royalty Free Photos, Pictures, Images And Stock Photography - the small ones are free - perfect size for blog posts and no attribution required. The majority of them are high quality and look as you'd expect from a premium stock site.

When you're purchasing from a stock site, it is almost definitely not a requirement to link back. For public domain photos, it is also mostly not required. However, for other free stock sites, it may be under their terms to do so.
