Broad niche or narrow niche for a forum?

I'm starting a forum and was wondering how broad or narrow should it be to be profitable. Everyone says narrower niches are better but why? I don't see how an entire forum could be based off of something so specific. For example the topic would be cars so which niche would be the best? :

From broadest to narrowest:

Cars
Luxury Cars
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes G-Wagen
#broad #forum #narrow #niche

It really depends on the niche.

If you are starting out you might not know the niche that well.
So it might not be good to make it too narrow.

If you're doing cars and need a moderator, I would be willing to help you out (I was a Mod with Motor Trend for 4.5 years).

I know that peeps here will say go narrow, but IMHO, I would go broad. The reason being is that if you have a narrow niche, then you will only attract so many people, and eventually, you will not be able to monetise the regular crowd.

It is vitally important that forums consistently attract a new crop of members, otherwise, the forum will slowly die. Also, if you're going to do a car forum, be sure to include a "non-car" discussion area. Critically important to the success of your forum.

Best of luck to you mate.
