Go to Elance or one of the other sites, and post a description of your project.

Here's why this is important: it forces you to work out what you want done, and how much you're willing to pay.

You can hire people by the hour, or by the month.

But it starts with what YOU want... :-)

Virtual Jeeves is a recommended service from my mentor. They charge flat 20 bucks an hour for a lot of different things. It is a team of specialists.

Haven't used them yet but will do so in the near future.

Cheers,

Brad Spencer

I'd start off at odesk and hire someone for a small project.

Example "I need someone to find and research 25 people in xxx industry. Put their contact information including name, website, phone number, email and mailing address into a simple excel sheet. Look for people who have established websites with content that is six months old and older."

Something to that effect.

If they pass your 'test' then you can proceed to a bigger job.

The biggest piece of advice I have for you is begin developing a relationship with the assistant. That way you can train them properly. Always having to retrain someone by doing repetitive tasks in nature is a waste of time. A one-off task such as writing a software program is a better use of hiring a freelancer.

I employ a full-time VA from the Phillipines that has been awesome. She is terrific at graphics, wordpress, and a variety of other stuff that I just don't have time to do. Occassionally I don't have enough work for her so I would can have her work for others at various tasks. The rate is $5 per hour. PM me if you ever need some help with tasks.

start small on teh freelance sites...give a job to three people and whoever wins gets the long term contract. Thats how I do it after being burned a few times.

Oh, definitely~ Odesk! A great service!
And being able to develop the relationship with the person is great advice. They get to know you, exactly what you want from their very first project..and you save time and money--because money is time--by re-hiring that competent individual...By far, I recommend Odesk also.
