Passion Over Potential

7 replies
Since getting into IM i've been completely going with potential. At least trying to find potential in long tail keywords on niche's I either knew nothing about or some lucky that I did.

Everything site related is about seo and keywords.

How likely are you nowadays to be able to take a new spin on things with no initial regard for SEO and turn it into a big profit?

I have 2 ideas, one isnt really an idea more of a passion. The other one is a new spin on things, that the 2 people ive told said "it has to exist" to which I cannot find....i can only find bits and pieces but nothing in a complete package as per my idea.

1) The first idea is a site geared at general weight loss, because I have a background in nutrition and health, I could potentially make a site covering everything and expose all the crap myths. Most weight loss stuff I see at least is either a new fad diet, trying to sell you something or some womens blog with general tips and crap.

2) The second idea is something that should exist and I know it exists in various pieces but nothing as a whole on one site. This is a resource concept site so not software or anything like that.

The first site is obviously on such a huge market that you wouldnt even exist in the SERPs and its in such a saturated market unless you were either amazing or became very authorative no one would know of you.

The second idea would be like trying to start another perezhilton site in this day and age (no topic relation). Discussing topics that you would never rank for until you are known.

Both sites would take lots of effort and I feel they would either fail terribly or do really good. Go big or go home mentality.

Im sure tons of people on these forums have these type of ideas. I am just wondering if this is the type of thing you leave in the back of your mind as a dream or actually pursue....sure there are sites like Icanhazcheesburger and 1 million pixels but those people are 1 in a million.

end rant

    How do you think those big sites got there in the first place? (hint: lots of work)

    Both options you mentioned could potentially take years to come to fruition, but if you are enjoying it then that time will fly by.

    PS. weight loss will never be saturated

      Seems to me if you are focusing your attention on two different models which in your eyes have little chance of success (bad place to start I'd think), then you'd best focus your attention on the one you have a passion for.

      I can't imagine that forcing yourself to do something you don't enjoy, for a very long time, would be any choice at all.

    To get up in the morning with a spring in your step because you love what you do is always the way to go!

    I mean you see so many people, especially in this industry, try and take on mammoth tasks or try and promote something they know nothing about and they you tend to see they quickly give up after having their next idea.

    Personally SEO is not my thing.. I would find a good product within a niche I love, preferably high ticket so I could quickly generate a good revenue from my marketing efforts and build a list within that niche. I'd focus myself 100% on that!

    That is a proven model and quite exciting as you can quickly create a decent cashflow allowing you to do other things, such as the ideas you mention here.

    How likely are you nowadays to be able to take a new spin on things with no initial regard for SEO and turn it into a big profit?
    Highly likely if you invest the time in performing thorough market research. I no longer do any financial coaching, but when I used to, about 99% of the time people failed because they simply didn't do enough market research.

    There are plenty of marketers who don't rely on SEO. I haven't done any SEO for years because I get my traffic via:

    * Paid advertising
    * Affiliates
    * Free publicity
    * Viral marketing campaigns
    * Giving away free software / apps
    * Structuring strategic partnerships

    You have two ideas, so my question to you is how much have you researched each idea? Who is your target market? What are their demographics? What are they buying?

    1) The first idea is a site geared at general weight loss, because I have a background in nutrition and health, I could potentially make a site covering everything and expose all the crap myths. Most weight loss stuff I see at least is either a new fad diet, trying to sell you something or some womens blog with general tips and crap.
    Companies like Beach Body have proven that weight loss and fitness is a very, very profitable market (along with many niches underneath them).

    The weight loss market fascinates me, because despite all the new exercise programs (P90X, Insanity, T25, XYZ Celebrity workout, etc.), unless you have a medical condition all it takes to lose weight is that a) you need to move / exercise a few times a week b) you have to eat nutritious foods and stay away from processed food.

    You're idea has merit. A new weight loss millionaire is created every single day; I read somewhere there's one created every 12 hours, but I couldn't find the reference. You can niche down the market and be willing to invest money to create a winning sales funnel and product mix.

    2) The second idea is something that should exist and I know it exists in various pieces but nothing as a whole on one site. This is a resource concept site so not software or anything like that.
    It goes back to due diligence: what does your market research say about this idea? Who are you targeting? Are these people / organizations that are going to purchase whatever you are selling and/or recommending?

      I really don't know how to "research" such broad markets as these. I mean is there a demand for weight loss..yes...is there millions to be made...yes....is the competition extreme...yes.

      As far as if my "idea" is already being replicated else where, for the weight loss idea...probably...would it be targeted the EXACT same way or close too....maybe...but not exactly the same.

      1) For the weightloss site...the idea would be a no bs info site...there would be no fad diets or crap like that. The approach would be more like a giant informational hub on weight loss in general for ANYBODY.. covering every aspect.........you dont need a specific diet to lose weight you just need to manipulate calories accordingly for your body type with the proper pacing and mentality.

      The reason I feel this can succeed is the amount of information in my dome on this topic. Added the fact my parent is a personal trainer added the fact I was previously a competitive bodybuilder, added the fact I read a few books in holistics, medical literature, orthopedic medicine, etc. Theres a lot to be told.

      demographic age I guess would be 10 yrs old to 100 yrs old, its very broad

      The big earner would be adsense, the few amazon nutrition supplements I do know work, maybe a few good ebooks if I ever found any.

      2) Second site demographic would be 15yrs to 35yrs old mainly. Earners would be different affiliate sites but again the idea of this site would be to get "big" and just have huge traffic for advertisements....this site is designed to get popular

      However, I am not foolish enough to just go out and start trying to pump these websites out on some "american dream" mentality, a motivational youtube video or an anthony robbins speech.

      I guess what Im asking is an impossible question, but I am just wondering if new IM'ers should stick to the "safe" way of builing low comp niche sites or if taking on something this big is actually achievable.

    I agree that weight loss is super saturated so I would avoid it unless you have deep pockets for promotion.

    Also, for your #2 choice... it depends on how hard you want to pursue it. If it's a topic you're interested in and you stick with it (key being persistence), you could make it work. I have a hobby website that is 7 years old. Started it because I was interested in the subject matter and I get lots of traffic and ad revenue off it. It certainly wasn't an overnight success by any means and tooks years to build up the traffic and income, but years of hard work pay off if you STICK WITH IT.
