    Hey Man,

Great move in deciding to start a blog.

Here's what you should do to get started:

    1. get a domain name. (be sure to register your name.com if it's available)
    2. install WP on your new domain (If you don't know how to do this, or prefer someone else do it then, hire a outsource worker. This should cost you 10-25 bucks at most.)
    3. Install a custom theme and plugins (I highly recommend the Thesis theme - Google it.)

That's the basics in 3 easy steps, if you need more help or have any questions feel free to contact me:

      Hi Jeff,

If you have a bluehost account then just use SimpleScripts or Fantastico (in your cPanel) to install the blog.

Next, upload your new template to the the template folder (the template probably came with simple directions)...then activate it from your blog.

Next start posting and adding plugins to make things work better...

If you already have hosting set up with bluehost and have your domain name, bluehost might be able to help you get things up and running. I was an idiot with Wordpress just 30 days ago. I use godaddy for hosting and domain names. I have used godaddy for years. People either love them or hate them.

Godaddy also has wordpress already set up and ready to go if you use their hosting. They helped me a lot. I now have 3 blogs up. Even helped me with ftp accounts which I had never used before.

I think I heard bluehost already has wordpress set up for its hosting accounts. Call and see if they can help.

It was quite easy. And that's coming from a novice.

    Good luck.

You've got your host and your template...
    1. Register a domain name (Preferably yoursitedotcom). I've always liked GoDaddy for domain registration. It will cost you about $10 for the domain.

    2. You should have received an e-mail from bluehost about nameservers or DNS. Use this info in GoDaddy to point to your host's DNS.

    3. Log in to CPanel and look for a button that says "Fantastico". It usually has like a blue smiley face next to it. Click in to fantastico and find wordpress. Install Wordpress in your main directory.

    4. Now log in to your FTP account (Bluehost should have sent you info on how to login to this). Find and enter the folder called "WP-Content". Then go in to the folder called "Themes". Upload your theme in to this folder. Upload the entire folder that has your theme in it.

    5. Now go to yourdotcom/wp-admin/and enter the username and password you gave it when you signed up.

    6. You should now be behind the scenes of your new blog. You just need to go to the appearance section on your wordpress menu, click on themes, and then select the new theme that you just uploaded.

That should do it. You should have a blog ready to go.

*sorry for (dot)s - I don't have enough posts to type them normally.

    Jeff,

Just expanding a little on the previous posters excellent reply......... ;-)

Just unzip the theme package and ftp it up to your wordpress installation, make sure you place the whole folder into the themes section of your wordpress installation.

Once uploaded the theme should show up in your dashboard. How do you see it? Log into your wp admin section and choose the option "Appearance" from the side menu, then choose option "themes" if upload was successful your theme should be there. Click on the screen shot and activate it. You should then recieve a notification on screen that it has been activated. Click the link, visit your site and you'll see it in action.

    Have fun. Hope that helps,

    Janet

Well, I dont know for sure what a wordpress guru looks like but I will give my 2 cents anyway,)

First and foremost, avoid making the single biggest mistake almost everyone makes when first setting up a wordpress blog.

You said you purchased a wordpress theme, good move, but why go with fantastico,( which is the single biggest mistake you can make when installing wordpress.

Install it yourself, it is not that hard really, and if you pm me I will send you my software for configuring wordpress for quick and easy installation.

But just in case there may be some others that are curious why fantastico is the DEVIL,

just google, why fantastico sucks and you will have all the answers you need to know, after all why trust me, you dont even know me, but how could thousands of other internet users be wrong?

Base line here is that fantastico is the absolute worst way to start a blogging career, period, it is just a really bad bad thing to do, yet I always see people recommending it, I have to just laugh and usually I keep it to myself, but today, you get this and so much more, all for a one time low payment of just xxx

    LOL, just kidding,)

Anyway, have a great day,) and stay away from fantastico

Tim, just curious, but if you don't install via Fantastico, aren't the directories where you need to upload/ftp etc just the same?

I'll have a search with Google, but don't really have any problems with Fantastico or Wordpress.

      Regards,

    Jeff,

What part exactly is stopping you?

It's all pretty simple and it's probably in your interest for you to spend some time playing around and learning it in your own way.

I have hundreds of WP blogs installed and configured in lots of different ways and the only thing I don't do myself is creating themes - because it's quicker and easier to get a graphicy person to do it

If you have a particular sticking point - just ask here.

Tim's right - using Fantastico is quick and easy but a pain in the ass because WP gets updated a lot and you need to get to grips with uploading plugins and widgets to become properly enabled to use it properly. It's best to just install it yourself. Once you've got your head around it you won't look back.

        Jeff,

Do you want your domain name to be the main page for your blog? or do you want your domaine name and then /blog?

        ie. www.jeffshomepage.com = the blog?
        or
        www.jeffshomepage.com/blog = the blog?

Makes a difference, before anyone can tell you where specifically to put what files for them to work on your hosting.

        Regards,

        Janet

In case anyone stumbles in, I figure I should add some step-by-steps.

So, you have your domain name, your WordPress software downloaded, and your new WordPress theme.

        Step 1: WordPress Installation
Manually installing WordPress has been my preference over 1-click since you have far more control. So, that is what I'll provide the instructions for doing.

        1. Create a new database table and user, then assign user ALL privileges to that table
        2. Unzip your WordPress files
        3. Upload the entire contents of the /wordpress/ folder your website's public folder (i.e. /public_html/ or /www/)
3b. Upload your theme's folder to your /wp-content/themes/ folder (this will save you from having to do it later)
3c. If you have any plugins, upload them to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder (again, to save you from having to do it later)
        4. Open up your browser and launch the WordPress installation script at /wp-admin/install.php (i.e. yoursite.com/wp-admin/install.php)
        5. When the page loads, type in the database information (i.e. the database name, the username and password, and where to find the database--should have been provided by your host)
        6. On the next page, assuming there were no problems, type the name of the website, your email address, and let loose.
        7. Important: After you've finished installing WordPress, delete or rename the install.php and upgrade.php files (found in the /wp-content/ folder)

There are also advanced methods for installing WordPress. For instance, I've written a couple of tutorials for installing multiple instances of WordPress using the same DB and installing WordPress in a different folder.

        Step 2: Activate Your Theme
        1. Log into your account and select Appearance
        2. From the list of the available themes, click on the theme you wish to activate
        3. Verify that the theme will not break if activated on your blog, then click "Activate ..." in the upper right corner of the preview window

        Step 3: Start Writing
After you've finished installing WordPress and your theme, it's time to start blogging...easily done by selecting Post=>Add New

For more information on the ins and outs of WordPress, I recommend reading through the Codex. There is a wealth of information for someone just getting started. Also, there are a number of tutorials online.

I am not a guru but have set up a few dozen wp blogs and mini sites for myself and others.

Most of my stuff is on bluehost and wordpress works great on bluehost.

Be careful about giving account info out. If you think you have a real good niche figured out you may want to really consider trying to work this out on your own without the aid of someone.

I have yahoo messenger and if you have the template and an idea of what you want to set up I could help walk you through it. That way next time you need to do it you can do it on your own. It can be a very rewarding experience.

awaxler, Matt Wolfe have pretty much pointed you in the right direction for starters and many people here are more than willing to give you advice and help so you can DIY.

Just PM me if you would like some help.

Hey good luck the biggest obstacle is just getting started....

Since I'm a visual learner, do what I did when I was in your shoes. I went into forums, discussion groups, etc to try to get an explanation on how to connect the dots. I just couldn't comprehend what everyone was trying to explain to me. Literally for 2+ weeks! It was all greek to me and I was just getting frustrated because "it was supposed to be ez as pie" and I was 2 weeks into it and still couldn't figure it out.

What did I do? I went to YouTube and entered "help intall wordpress blog" or something to that effect, and literally dozens of videos popped up and walked me through it and within a couple hours I was jammin.

Watching someone walk me through the steps instead of trying to explain it all to me was just what I needed and made ALL the difference. If I'd have thought of YouTube initially I would've saved myself a couple weeks of aggravation trying to decipher and make sense of what everyone was trying to explain to me.

Now YouTube is the first place I check for anything.

Some themes don't upload correctly - according to your hosting- but if you go ahead - be brave, see what happens, sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised.

If you've upload to the "themes" folder correctly - then all you can do after that is see if that particular theme will work with your host....... it's as simple as that. Some themes do and some themes don't for no particular reason. It's a case of "suck it and see"

Always make sure you have the latest updated version your host has allowed. Otherwise, what you think should work, won't.

Figured I should also include some instructions for installing a theme, as some of you may already have WordPress installed.

Above all, before beginning, make sure to read any special instructions that the theme author may have provided. But, essentially this is all that's needed to install a WordPress theme:

    1. Download the theme files
    2. Unzip the files to your computer; make sure that it's not unzipped into a double folder (i.e. /theme-name-1.3/theme-name/...your theme folder would be just /theme-name/ with all the files inside)
    3. Upload the theme folder (i.e. /theme-name/) to your /wp-content/themes/ folder
    4. Once the files are uploaded, log into your WordPress admin panel and select Appearance
    5. From the Appearance menu, click on the theme you wish to activate and a preview window should pop up. If everything looks A-OK, then click the "Activate ..." link in the upper right.
    6. You're done...your new theme should be live to the world.
