Many government entities, at least in the USA, work on a bidding process. To facilitate that, they have lists of "RFQ" (Request for Quotation) or Open Bids.

Check the local gov't website or administrator's office for their current projects.

Having worked with local governments for many years I can tell you that the range of services they buy is extremely varied.

A more appropriate question might be: "What kind of service are you prepared to sell to local government? And why would they want to purchase that service from you (given all the many other choices they have)?

Local government needs are much the same as private business needs - they have staffing issues, budgeting issues, customer service needs, data and technology needs, transportation and fleet issues, location and housing needs, personnel and payroll needs, and many, many more.

I can honestly tell you that unless you have the experience, track record, and ability to service a large corporation, trying to sell to public entities is going to be very difficult. Most of the products and services government purchases come after a solicitation, bidding, and contracting process. It is typically a very competitive and specialized way of doing business that is hard to break into unless you really understand what you're doing.

Public entity budgets are set in advance of the budget year and "impulse" sales are rarely a possibility. These days, every purchase is scrutinized and reviewed thoroughly. The typical type of Internet sales that most marketers do are not usually the type of purchases that public agencies buy (including services).

Just be aware that this type of business is outside the range of experience of most people here at the forum.

Do you care to be more specific about what type of service you're proposing to sell?

Wow Steve you know this stuff very well.
And yes i am aware of the yearly budgeting they use, but because i wanted to have a general idea on what to offer, i omitted (on purpose) to mention that it was not in the US but African countries goverments.
Not long ago i was given a no bid contract to train "Get this" 160 members of parliament on how to use an IPAD. And this alone alowed me to go to 3 other countries to do the same.
Remember this is Africa, it's in the making and they wanna copy whats in the west . So i Raised this question because of what they are asking me ( we need a website like whitehouse.gov/, we need an app for this and that, and it needs to be in the app store. etc...

That is why i decided to consult the warrior forum.

Can someone make a wordpress theme to clone the whitehouse site that is easy to customize ?

Just as an FYI, Whitehouse.gov is built on Drupal, and if you are going to try and service government entities it would be in your best interest to learn Drupal. It gives you more flexibility, scales better and is pretty damn robust. It is also easier to integrate third party services into it. And if you end up wanting to outsource it, there are tons of drupal developers as well.

The other trick some developers use on government projects, and you have to figure out if you want to risk it, is to bid $1 on a project then have exorbitant change order fees (oh can you change these links to green? Yep, put a change order in.)

              Afrolite,

You should contact fellow warrior Willie Crawford (from Florida, I believe). He had a thread awhile back about doing business and opening up markets in Africa. He is a credible and experienced marketer.

              You might start here.

              Good luck to you,
