I suggest that you test it yourself.
The result will vary depending on many factors.

I've tried pretty much every method of list building known to man. Sending traffic direct to your squeeze page will net you the most subscribers (less hoops to jump through).

It is cheaper to bring traffic to your fan page using Facebook Ads then it is to send it directly to a squeeze page. However, the response rate from FB fans is much less then sending out an offer to your mailing list. So in my experience, it is better to send targeted traffic to a squeeze page.

The best option is to send traffic to a fan page that automatically redirects to your squeeze page using a re-direct plugin. Yes, that plugin turns your fan page into a regular html redirect page. That way you pay fan page low prices but still get top quality traffic to your squeeze page. Ka-chinngg!

After your Facebook ad is accepted by the FB team, then simply change your ad using a redirect plugin, and WALAHH...

If the goal is list building always send the traffic directly to a clean squeeze page.

If your goal is to build a responsive list that actually opens your email NEVER send cold traffic to a squeeze page.

In fact just better to disregard squeeze pages in nearly all situations. They just aren't very effective anymore.

Cold traffic > content rich site with tons of value > visitors opt in willingly because they want to receive more content from you > high open rates / clicks / sales.

It seems to me that list building always works better if you are sending to a nice, clean squeeze page - the fewer distractions the better. I hate popups on content sites - as a general rule, they always make me click away or at least NOT opt in. You can always provide value by directing traffic to a content-rich site after the fact. But initially, a squeeze page for me.

I'm basing my statements on endless tests and lots of data.

Not sure where pop ups came into it, I didn't mention them.

Sending them to the content rich site AFTER is too late. You don't want everyone and anyone on your list and you don't want to have to bribe them to join.

Better to filter out the time wasters and those not a good fit for your list before hand so they don't clog up your AR and drive down open rates and clicks whilst increasing unsubscribes and spam complaints.

People should opt in because they WANT to be on your list not because you forced them to to get access to information they may or may not want in the end.

Build a relationship with people before hand by showing them the knowledge you have and what you can offer them and you'll end up with a much more responsive list overall.

I am an avid tester. I also completely understand that very situation and every niche is different.

I have a higher percentage of people who land on my squeeze page sign up for my list. However, I have a more responsive list when I have a sign in form on my website.

So I have found it lately to be have a higher ROI when including my sign in form a my websites.

However, you need to test this for your specific situation, it may be different.

Yes, each niche may work differently but using a clean, simple squeeze page will work. Be sure to offer either something of value for free for there email address or offer they type of information they will want if they get on your list. Have few steps for them to deal with. Make it too complicated and you will lose people right away.

Traffic to a squeeze page. Make your squeeze page, where the person only has to enter their name and email address, and that's it. You'll get more emails that way.

It seems to be influenced by where the traffic comes from. If from FB ads, then sending them to a FB page might make sense.

The number of emails on the list isn't important. The number of people who open, read them, and take action is.

Why people are obsessed with list size is beyond me when it has no relevance to how much money you'll make.

Small responsive lists easily beat large lists where no one opens or clicks.

If you send them to a squeeze page, really focus on separating out those who you don't want, and those you do. You can do this by funneling them down the page to an optin form. If they're really interested in what you may offer them, they will read and optin.

Andre does an amazing job at this with his site: Affiliate Bully — New CRUEL Rules for Success (2013)

See how he gives them a LOT of value up front? He is not only informing, but narrowing down his prospects who will be more responsive to him.

Does it have to be 8 pages of content? Nope.

It's better to really weed out junk subscribers and pull in the hungry ones. When you do this, a highly targeted list of 100 will easily pull out more sales vs. a generic list of thousands.

I prefer to use a light box that pops on my home page. I have a plugin that allows me to do split testing.

Send directly to your squeeze page to build your list. Than after some time in forward you again can ask your subscribers to like your fan page. If the person is already interested than he will opt in to your list than it will be easier for you him to like your page later. Build your audience with your list is the most successful way. Than you can always direct them where you want with just a message of course without spamming))
