How do you market in 2014?

I used to be an avid Warrior back in the day and knew how to market a site like the back of my hand. But that was 3 years ago. Since then I've spent my time developing a custom built social network. The problem is I've spent so much time developing I've forgotten how to market! Well sort of. I'm also aware techniques might have changed.

I was wondering if some kind soul could point me in the direction of a thread and/or resource that can talk me through marketing my social network?

    Happy to help.

Things have not changed drastically in the last 3 years: many of the same traffic-generation principles still apply.

But since you want to develop an audience for your social network, look to other social networks for your traffic source. Consider the big ones - FB, G+, Twitter, etc - but also look at the smaller variety, where you'll have less competition from other marketers, and where you can upsell them - I would guess - to a superior social networking experience.

Pay per click is the way to go. This is by far the fastest way to get the most traffic to your site that works really well.

Well it depends on what you want to marketer. I like to use Youtube. I simply create videos explaining stuff, while I promote affiliate products. But it's definitely something that takes awhile to get traffic. Sure only if you use some shady tricks that I see other guys doing lol.

If you are specifically looking for a website that will teach you online marketing methods, I recommend Charliepage.com. There is a free course there that will reveal several traffic generation strategies.

Here is one thing to remember though, and it took me a while to get this. If you plan to do any paid advertising, begin with the end in mind. In other words, the economics must sense.

    What does that mean?

Well, if you plan to use pay per click or solo ads, you need to make sure that whatever you advertise will make you a profit. This way you can keep spending on advertising.

So consequently, if you don't yet have anything to sell, paid advertising can be used to build your audience fast but you will have to delay making profits until you have something to sell.

    Hope this helps.

i will market the same way the vikings did back in 1801, and the same way they did it in teh 1950's ....chit! even what they were doing 8 years ago!

Build a list, and market to that list. Get new leads, and try to turn those leads into customers yes?

What were you expecting us to say? I mean.....really comon!

Time to build a business, not a money spinner yes? no? well I will leave that up to you.

OP. The more things change, the more they STAY THE SAME! Take these words to the bank please. :-)

haha thanks guys. Some good advice. Thanks for the charliepage link. I'll check it out. Just need a refresher course.

As far as paid for advertising is concerned it is something I aim to do but my main aim is to get people to sign up and use my social network.

This is free to do. My income will come from numbers using the site. The more members I get to use it regularly the more will hit the adverts. At least that is my thinking.

The problem is with paid for advertising I don't think I'll see a quick return on my money and that is a problem for me as monies are low. I'm thinking of concentrating my efforts on creating social media initially as this is free to do.

      If you ask me...

      Social Media.

      Niche forums.

      Guest blogs.

      Sponsored Reviews.

      Website ads.

      Pay Per Click ads.

      And of course, email lists.

That should do it for you.

        A great list there
I would also like to add,

Also in 2014, we are already doing well by putting banner ads on high traffic forums. There is no better way to get high quality traffic, that is the most likely to join your list and bring in sales for you.

Basically you can work out deals with the owner, and for those of them that are not marketing savy, you can literally get these for under $100 sometimes less than $50.

        Media buying is awesome.

Passion. Pure and simple. I started my business to solve a problem I saw in a market I love. I didn't aim to do a social network at first but through creating my business plan it became obvious that the answer was a social network dedicated to my market. Developing it has been a lot more work than I had planned but now its finished it was so worth it. I say finished. It's never finished but I now have a site that is ready to accept customers.

Now I need to market the hell out of it which is why I am back on warrior forum with my marketing hat back on again. I've gone full circle from where I started but being back in marketing game is where I feel most comfortable and why I got into internet marketing in the first place.

Congrats on sticking to something that is actually useful and with the intention of helping others. I would go where your niche goes and put your ads there. Pretty vague I know but at the same time, if you really know your niche, you'll know where they hang out too.

You market mainly the same today as was done in the era of the flintstones. Only it is now done by word of mouth, flyers, INTERNET, TV, etc.

Marketing has changed over the years. The techniques have changed a lot that all.

You to figure out want will work for you, and adapt it to how you need to use it.

          WE NEED TO ADAPT!!!!!

Don't try to re-invent the wheels.

The same stuff that works years back is still working. The only changes is on SEO/linkbuilding, you'll need glasses this time.

I've built a brand too and have little interest in SEO so ranking for keywords is not an important part of my marketing strategy. Instead I aim to use another strategy, probably social media, to get my brand known. Could you expand further on what you said above as I would be interested to hear your thoughts?

I am going to stick to the basics, PPC, SEO, articles, media, and email marketing. I will try to mix in some video marketing as well. I plan to spend more time on SEO in 2014, for many it has gotten harder, but my Google traffic only increases with every algorithm update. I no longer have to fight blackhat SEOers, they have all been removed.

I use all the major Social Media Networks. But Facebook is the best place to directly connect with your leads. I'd say I make about 90% of my online money using Facebook. Although with all their changes they've tried to make it more difficult. They want you to pay for the things you used to get for free. The follow feature is nice because they only allow 5,000 friends so even if you're maxed out people can still follow you.

Fight fire with fire...promote your social network with other social networks. I think someone up above made a comment that explained this better, but you can't go wrong with social media these days....that's where everyone is...also, the model of building relationships will never change...I think you'll do just fine!
