google's new "wonder-wheel"

I have done a bit of training about it, i have obviously played with it, and i could see the potential for finding keywords, but i have to say it does seem to get you lost quite quickly. not so much lost as side tracked into keywords that you werent searching for at all.
i think traditional types of keyword research are still way better.
does anybody have any strong opinions about this wonder-wheel yet?

in case you havent looked at the wonderwheel yet, do a normal google search, then click on "show options" then click on "wonder-wheel" once you are there you will see that it will continually lead you along with more and more keyword options.
it is quite fun.
but how useful?

I have no idea why Google even bothered to develop wonder wheel. As far as IM is concerned they already have far better tools for doing keyword research. It seems more like a toy for web 2.0 enthusiasts to play with for a few minutes.

My strong opinion about wonder wheel is that its relatively useless and provides very little information.

Actually It's a great tool for helping you find
new related niches that you wouldn't have
      thought of.

You can then go and use the
other tools to find keywords for the niches you
      just found.

So I would have to disagree with you and say it's
an excellent and powerful tool that in the right
hands can help you to make alot more money.

i guess, finding long tail type niches, yeah you are correct.
i find my local yellow pages still my best resource.
        seriously.
then i go with the rest of your advice and use the standard tools.
        thanks for the reply.

I've seen it recently and played around with it a little. It does seem not to be aimed directly at marketers or SEO'ers but at the everyday person doing a search who might just be curious what else there is out there.

However, while it's not so heavy-duty for "niche research", it's perfect for what I call "niche brainstorming"! This is the part of reserach where you're not actually judging a niche and whether it's going to be good or not - it's when you're collecting as many ideas as is possible and you need to access places you would never have even thought of to go. And after you have your big list of possible niches, then you start narrowing it down into the viable ones.

For that kind of thing it's perfect! You can easily end up in segments of a market you would have never even been close to getting to normally.

It's been useful to get a basic set of keywords around a theme but then I use my regular keyword tools to take it from there. I dont think I'd miss it though if they took it away.

It's quite visual, but of limited use to me in keyword research.

Its a real good tool for finding buried sub-niches... that's all I use it for.

one good thing is that you can click on the forums, or the video bit, and i find that it gives me a quick way to see how "alternate" forms are competing.
