ClipGrab is a great free application that works on windows and macs. You do have do download it, but the huge bonus is there's no restriction on length or size of video you want to download.

install a plugin called download helper

or you can open the video link and add the word "kiss" before youtube

"i am serious btw"

so if your video link is YouTube
edit it to be Fetch Video > Download & Convert Video for Free!
and you will get redirected to website to download the video

this works well and no need to install any fancy plugin, just plug in the youtube link and select the format you need.

The Firefox plugin works best. Very smooth.

MacTubes also works if you are on a MAC.

I'll ditto the Firefox plugin. Do a search in Firefox Add-ons for "download youtube videos as Mp4".

I have used it several times, for ideas of course. I'm a PC guy; have no idea what may work on the MAC.

Once installed, a red "Download" button shows up below the video. Click and save.

I use the Firefox add-on on my Mac and it works just fine. There are a few of them though, but just try them out and see which one works best for you. Some have a download button right under the video,(the one I use) and another one sits as a button at the top of your browser. You can always uninstall the ones you don't like.

Whenever I want to download one I simply pull up the yt video on my browser, and in the address bar url right after the www. simply add ss in between the www. and the rest of the url and hit enter and you'll be taken to a page that will give you multiple options to download it for free.

Nice tip, Sharpster! Didn't know that one.

One advantage with download helper - mention by somebody else above - is that you can also "download and convert" if you need to.

So, for example, you can convert it to iPad or iPhone format automatically once it has downloaded. Which is pretty cool.

You can try freemake video downloader. It's a free software. You can download YT files and convert them to mp3s, avi, mp4, etc. So easy to use as well.
