Try out Stripe. By far the most awesome payment processor out there. We put 500k+ a year through them without ANY issues.

We moved from PayPal.

Well it depends on who you are dealing with, if your main target are online marketers Paypal is essential because most of them preferred paypal.

If not, I suggest better used other payment options. Paypal charge is very high and to avoid some stressful issues in paypal.

Also the fees are very high, and don't forget dealing with the chargebacks..

PayPal isn't essential to IM but it plays a big role in it. It depends on what you are trying to do.

If you are selling E-books on a website, there are alternatives to PayPal. But if you are selling a domain name, most people exchange using PayPal.

As much as it pains me to say this, for the IM niche PayPal is the way to go. I don't like the way PayPal and eBay handle support issues, but you will get many more sales in the IM niche by using PayPal.

I am hoping for a major competitor in the near future to take over.

IM is every kind of marketing - including your eBay store (and life business; whatever a "life bisiness" might be...) - that happens on the interweb

If you promote/sell/ anything using the web - it is internet marketing; i.e. you are doing some kind of marketing activity online... on the internet.

Unfortunately, a lot of people - wrongly - think that internet marketing equals the stupid MMO niche [MMO = Make Money Online, where most of the time the blind leads the blind or self-appointed gurus sell the dream to brainless newbies].

And to answer your question: to do real internet marketing you can live forever without Paypal. To sell in the MMO niche - you better get an account: this market loves PP

You can't do without PayPal if you want to do full IM except if you plan on leaving money on the table.

Paypal allows up to 2, 3 different accounts and if you want to use one account simply create different emails for each business.

If payment is made to any of the emails only the actual email the payment was sent to gets a notification of payment but it shows up in your account viewable by logging in with any email, I guess you know this too then transfer the money.

It's not a bad idea to have different payment options on your site.

You should have Paypal as a part of your overall payment processor because everyone and their mother has used paypal at least once, but you don't always want to have all your eggs in one basket. Here are some great alternatives:

Yes, there are other options than Paypal. And you can do business without Paypal.

But, Paypal is so widely recognized and some people feel very safe using that system.

Knowing that if there is any problems there are some safety nets for both parties to come to a resolution.

I would honestly be too scared to sell any kind of products via PayPal in the IM niche.

The IM niche is notorious for serial refunders or charge back whores. When you're selling digital products, you can always fight the refund and win because it's a non-tangible item, but the problem is you'll have a high refund rate.

If you get to around a higher than 3% refund or dispute rate, they'll lock your account and want to know every little detail about your business.

Then, some minimum wage employee who probably doesn't care enough to read everything you wrote or uploaded into the case will either hit unlock or shut down your account. In that event, they'll hold your money for 6 months (for whatever reason) and permanently ban you from the site.

However, if that situation ever arises.. don't contact customer support, it's mostly minimum wage workers who could care less and are just reading from a script.

There are tons of alternatives out there, but the problem is getting people to use them after they have years of experience and trust PayPal.

3% refund all disputes rate sounds a little low, Corey! Maybe a 3% complaint or chargeback rate they'd be upset: but 3% refund rate?

On ClickBank that would be a miraculous launch in the IM niche!

Sure, stories abound of people having their PayPal accounts frozen and this has screwed up many a product launch.

But you have to be canny - because many people simply like paying by PayPal.

So if you do have a product launch of some sort. Then, first of all, try and do a test run – maybe to a friends list – to see what the refund rate is and if it's too high, tweak the launch.

Secondly, I would never do launch without having at least one backup PayPal account so I can switch to it. If PayPal block the account during a launch.

Thirdly, I would do what a lot of people don't do, and phone up PayPal to let them know that there will be a lot of money going through the account on launch day and for a few days afterwards. They do make a note of this and while it's not foolproof, it will lessen the chances of them panicking because of something they don't know about.

As another poster commented, everybody carps about PayPal – but people like paying with PayPal!

There are a lot people in this thread who take it as gospel that you must have Paypal.com.
Try testing for yourself. Rotate between Paypal.com and one of their competitors. This is the only way to know for sure.

I, personally dislike some aspects about Paypal.com.

Depends on your target market. In the IM world for example Paypal is rather standard. In other niches it's viewed with a little skepticism.

Paypal may not be vital in itself to success, but a way to accept credit cards is pretty much a prerequisite to business success now days.

Londonwar, like you I have a mixed business: online and off. Most of the online business has been through freelancing sites, which have taken care of the billing, but I'm starting to expand to do direct Internet marketing myself. But as I said, I also have local and regional clients, many of them businesses. Because I do B2B services, I preferred to go with authorize.net and am combining it with a free (for now) invoicing system, Fetchflow.

They sum up the advantages of Authorize.net vs. Paypal on their blog, http://www.fetchflow.com/blog/authorize-net-invoicing:

It allows you to branch out beyond just PayPal, into both credit and debit cards, as well as electronic checks. Plus, if you have a brick and mortar store, you can sync all of your financials together, storing all of your sales, profits, and customer information in one secure place.

It makes professional looking invoices, including invoices I can send by post. Also, many of my business clients don't do PayPal.

But, I guess it depends on what you're selling. Doing mainly B2B, I really wanted to go with Authorize.net. If you're selling B2C, I agree with others that PayPal is fine.

I don't believe that Paypal is essential for the IM business. It does play an important role because alot of Imers and customers use paypal for alot of things. Guess it kinda depends on what you're intending to sell as well.

Think of fiver that charges a small $5 fee and where would they be with out pay pal? It is almost essential, but you can create kindle e-books using amazon. Also, you can sell your physical products through amazon. This is probably an option for you. This is actually quite easy. OK so another option is Google checkout, but they are even worse.

If this question is specific for warrior forum then I would say a resounding YES. The IM niche in general is dominated by paypal as the payment processor of choice. Outside of IM paypal still has a trust, and convenience factor rivaled by few. Does it have issues? OH YEAH. But most of those issues are burdens upon the sellers, not the buyers.

Hey Londonwar,

I had the same dilemma as you last year.

If you are selling info products this may help:

What I did was put a product on Clickbank. Clickbank accepts Paypal or credit cards from the customer.

Clickbank pays you directly so you have the best of both worlds - accept Paypal for customer's convenience but you don't need to mess with Paypal yourself.

You can use other payment options, but you might find that you lose some customers. In IM particularly, Paypal is probably the most popular form of payment for both buyers and sellers.
