Do you know which network this is ?

Hello there,

We are all familiar with the clickbank market place and
affilates get this kind of link:

http://affiliate.vendor.hop.clickbank.net

But I have been seeing thsi style
of affliate link a lot lately and I am curious as to which network it is.

Some seem to have "CBpitchpage" in the link but are on the vendors own dom name.

Is it a script that people are using on their own server ?
It seems a bit too common for that. Unless it is a CB script that is now available ?

Here are 3 links using the same method:

(BTW these are NOT my aff links - and I am certainly NOT
recommending anything - I am JUST talking about the link structure )

(edit - I changed the dom name slightly so that they won't work)

Thanks for any help

    ClickBank.

Those are the redirects that the ClickBank hoplink program generates when processing the first type of hoplink that you posted. For example, if you take this URL:

    http://advisory.livingonad.hop.clickbank.net/
And paste it into your browser, you will end up with the URL you posted as your third example. ClickBank is running a script at hop.clickbank.net that processes the hoplink, records all the statistical data, drops a tracking cookie on the user's computer, and redirects to the vendor's salespage with the appended "?hop=affiliatenickname" added to the vendor's URL.

Savvy CB vendors use their own scripting to record affiliate stats and redirect to a new URL that does not include the "?hop=" portion, which is obviously a dead giveaway that it's an affiliate link. I'm always suspicious of vendors who neglect this step.

By the way, any affiliate who thinks that they will get a commission by using the URLs that include their nickname in the "?hop=" format are mistaken. That type of URL completely bypasses the ClickBank tracking system and will not generate a commission.

    Hope this helps.

      Thanks for your replay Steve.

I think that I understand it now.

But just one question - why does CB include that "?hop=affiliatenickname"
in the redirect url. After all CB has already collected the data and payments will be based on that. The vendor doesn't need that info. and 99.9 % of vendors will not process it anyway - so why send it to the sales page ?

That is NOT for clickbank! Clickbank couldn't even use that! It is for the vendor that gets paid by clickbank. So they know YOU made the sale, etc... And people should SUFFER just because some OTHERS don't use it? That is STUPID! AGAIN, there is NO way to know if they use it. NONE! That "html" page may end in HTML, etc.... and have one domain name, but may run a thousand computers, and process data on ALL of them!

DON'T LAUGH! One company BRAGS that they do JUST THAT! They BRAG that when you use their little SIMPLE page that it accesses THOUSANDS of systems, etc... They track MASSIVE amounts of data, SCAN MASSIVE amounts of data, and piece together a LOT! People are SCARED of what they do, and RIGHTFULLY so! And GUESS what guys! That stupid little SIMPLE page looks like HTML! (index.html brings it up, but index.htm, index.php, etc... bring up an ERROR page!)! Their name? GOOGLE! And what of Amazon? WHO KNOWS what THEY are doing now?

So to claim that ANYONE can fathom what anyone is doing with that little tag is just DUMB! Someone may have 50 sites(not unlikely), and pass the URLs to someone else(not unlikely), and that company may eventually feed them back reports that they can break down by that code. So even if they have ONE system, and NO ability to run programs, they may STILL be using that code.

What do YOU care anyway? If you don't want to use it, DON'T!

BTW it is IMPOSSIBLE to pass cookies! That would be a SECURITY violation! You pass cookie data using the ? operator, or as a POST(which isn't as flexible)! There is NO other proper way to do it. Cookies are used ONLY for passing when the same EXACT domain name is used.

Goodness me - someone is in a lousy mood !

I wasn't suggesting that CB shouldn't send the affiliate info, just asking why.

I know it is no use to CB. - no need to rant. (calling me STUPID and DUMB just for asking a question).

It would be interesting to know how many use that piece of data by recording it and then as Steve said, redirecting to a plain html file afterwards.

Yikes! No one said anything about "passing cookies." I said that the script at hop.clickbank.net drops a cookie on the user's computer. That cookie will only become significant if the user then visits the CB order page for the same product at pay.clickbank.net. That's what CB order links look like: product_number.vendor.pay.clickbank.net. Same domain name as the affiliate hoplink: clickbank.net. That's how they track who gets the commission.

Actually many of the larger and/or more knowledgeable vendors do use it. I have no idea what the percentage is, but I am sure it's higher than 0.1%. Some of the really sophisticated vendors use it to give extra tracking services to their affiliates, such as individualized Google conversion tracking.

I have no idea to be honest because, in theory, once the cookie is implemented there's no need from a technical point of view to include that on the URL redirect
