Managing Ad Accounts For Clients

I'm beginning to get into managing ad accounts for clients and would like to know a few things from those who already do this for a living.

1. I'd rather have their credit card on file instead of asking for a prepay. What's the best way to collect this info? Do I just get them to enter their CC into the advertising account (Facebook, Adwords) by themselves once I set it up?

2. Is it normal to disclose and bill the client separately for me having to purchase monthly services like tracking and split testing software, or should I just silently write those expenses into the retainer?

3. If I start out hourly (since I don't know how to budget for a project) what falls under billable hours for setting up a campaign from start to finish, buying software, creating ads, LPs, optimizing, running reports, etc?

4. If a client wants to sell products in his e-commerce store but has no idea on how to go about it or which ones he thinks will be profitable, is it best to ask for a huge budget to test all of them from the start or a smaller budget to do a test run on the ones you think will sell best?

Nice, specific questions. I like that

I'll try to answer this from what I used to (I don't manage ad accounts anymore).

    1. Have them add it to the account themselves, and discuss a daily spend limit. That way, you won't be blamed for overspending and they would know what they are getting.

    2. Depends on the client, but almost all of my clients pay for additional expenses themselves. They know that it's part of the business to use tracking and similar software, so they see it as a business expense.

    3. Everything. If you are spending dedicated time on the work, bill it. Of course, be realistic, always report in a timely manner and be honest about it. Clients appreciate when they get accurate (and regular) reports.

Tell them what all you are going to bill for so that they know for sure.

    4. This comes down to results. Have you brought good results for others? Do you have testimonials?

Usually, I take a small budget for something, show them that I can get real results and then get a proper retainer contract. That way, I can show them I know my stuff.

    Hope this helps mate

If they are not paying for the ads themselves, always get prepayment.

    2. Is it normal to disclose and bill the client separately for me having to purchase monthly services like tracking and split testing software, or should I just silently write those expenses into the retainer?
This one is up to you, as a service I would just create a couple of different packages at a monthly rate offering more services in larger packages.

    3. If I start out hourly (since I don't know how to budget for a project) what falls under billable hours for setting up a campaign from start to finish, buying software, creating ads, LPs, optimizing, running reports, etc?
I would not recommend hourly, take time to calculate your average time it takes to complete your tasks, give yourself a 20% buffer and charge that as your service fee.

    4. If a client wants to sell products in his e-commerce store but has no idea on how to go about it or which ones he thinks will be profitable, is it best to ask for a huge budget to test all of them from the start or a smaller budget to do a test run on the ones you think will sell best?
This one two is a tricky situation, when it comes down to it you have to test the products and explain this to your client. Once you find the product that performs well, start ramping that one up.

What do you show your clients as far as campaign strategy goes?

      - The science behind the ads?
      - The keyword list you're using to make them money?
      - The targeting?

Or is it best to just show them everything?
