Use a pop up email capture or not?

I am considering adding a pop up box on a eBook website to encourage visitors to sign up to a "mini course".

My concern is that, whenever I visit a sales page the pop up distracts me from the sales copy. This could potentially affect sales?

Does anyone have any comments about this or have carried out any split tests?

    Hey,

yeah it can effect sales, however, it can
    also result in many subscribers.

I'd say go for it, but set up the pop up when
the person tries to exit the page and not when
    he enters.

If you do use one, make sure you make it easy for them to close or ignore it.

There's an idea behind that popup and a very big marketer out there gave everyone it on a plate when they paid for his very high priced product.

I would go for an exit pop-up so if they go to leave your page in any way the popup appears..

What I would offer there is a sneak peak at your product.. maybe the contents page and intro..

Personally I think people like to see what they are going to be getting rather than a mini-course.. at lest that's all that has ever enticed me to buy..

On the other hand, figure out the secret to the popups and you'll see your sales sore.

I wouldn't trust anybody elses test results...

Everything that happens on your salespage is unique to your situation. You might get a few ideas from other marketer's test results, but that's all they'll ever be - rough ideas. Some will work, some won't.

John Taylor is an interesting marketer to watch, he's always testing something different.

I have split test it before. Sometimes it increases conversions, sometimes it lowers them. Depends on source of traffic, type of site, type of customer etc...

I think the onexit popup scripts are the best but i not got round to split testing them as i just started to use them.

I have used them in the past with good conversion rates. However, as an internet browser myself, I know that I always close them out as soon as they pop up, so now a days I simply set my opt-in at the sidebar.

You mean the floating window that chases you around as you scroll through the sales page? if so, I find it WAY too intrusive. It's impossible to focus on the page with that thing flying around.

I'm afraid I agree - it just takes your eyes away from the sales copy. Site design appears to be OK other than that.

        I personally use a sidebar opt-in.

I don't like the popups that open a new window.
I believe the Google does not like these due to issues with the back button.

I've been considering the delayed popup that is not a new window but an overlay - dhtml maybe???.

Does this meet the Google requirements for the back button?

Anybody have experience to share on these 2 styles of popups?

        Thanks

Another alternative is the Ultimate Footer Ad which does its thing at the bottom of the screen. Less obtrusive, but still there.

    Hi

Interesting post here, I personally found that the pop up window box set around 5-15 second delay seems not too intrusive, however the mentioned of exit pop up is certainly a great one as it makes the viewer think again.

Alternatively, there is that new corner click here to peel back feature that I've seen a few fellow IM use.

And there is that annoying one where you leave, click exit and it redirects you back to the same page and same pop up box. Now that's certainly annoying.

Overall, the exit pop up is probs better or you can have an inline opt in box at the side too.
