Okay. In the next few months I am will be starting an ecommerce site selling a range of t-shirts and other products too.

What I need to do is generate not only awareness and interest in the products, but whether people will actually spend money on it before splashing out £1000's on stock, website, Ads etc on it.

My first thought is a opt in page, which will get traffic from SEO, adwords and other links from social networking sites. This opt in gives people a discount on the products for a limited time after launch. from that I can see if there are enough people interested in it to warant going any further.

I do first of all need to get the t-shirt designs done first of course.

What are your suggestions on the best ways to do this? would you do it a different way, maybe through preorders, crowdfunding or other options?

My thought would be to make your site a free membership site. This way you can start with a few T-shirt designs and then add new ones as your business grows. With a membership site you have the contact information of all the members.

You could introduce a new T-shirt every week, bi-weekly or monthly. The idea is not to do all kinds of designs before you know they will sell. Then you can let your members know when a new design is available.

You could even encourage members to submit ideas for a very small portion of the profit if you use their ideas.

Depending on your profit margin, you may be able to have an affiliate program so other stores will offer your T-shirts for a commission and you just drop-ship them to the customers for the affiliates (other stores).

You could just show the designs and add the designs to T-shirts after they have been ordered. That way you would not be stuck with a bunch of different sized T-shirts with designs that did not sell.

This is an idea to limit the initial cost and have an action plan if your designs really take off.

I've just been brainstorming out loud with myself as I have no idea of what the demand is for custom T-shirts. So I hope if nothing else I have stimulated some more ideas.

    Best regards,

If you have some great concepts or ideas for shirts I would invest some money in some FB ads. Run like campaigns for the shirt and see how much interest you generate from it. You could go that route.
      Or
Create a Fan Page with some t shirt niches you have in mind and run a like campaign for your page. Once you get enough likes for your page. Throw some shirt design ideas out to the group and see which ones they like.
Once you find a winner, offer your shirt for sale through your site and watch the sales come in

You could setup a small page with maybe just 5 T-shirt designs. Any time they click the "Add to cart button" it takes them to a "Sorry, out of stock page.". Use Analytics and setup events to trigger whenever anyone reaches this page.

As for traffic, you could run an Adwords campaign. I always get free coupons in the mail for like $100. That should be enough to gauge your interest.

Do what other successful vendors do - create a few prototypes, photograph them on young, cute, curvy girls, and use the photos for ads and social media.

Once you start selling, encourage people to send you photos of them wearing the shirts. Use those for additional social media fodder - from tweets to "favorite photo" contests; you could even run a bracket-type "t-shirt tournament", with a big discount on the winner.

Lots of ways to generate attention...
