For those of you who went to university, do you feel it enhanced your online business? Do you regret going to university?

All discussion is welcome.

I never went to university, but my gut says that if most of those people spent the time in university building an affiliate business than they would be much, much more successful and would have learned so much more.

I went to a university for engineering and then found the online business world afterwards. While my education didn't exactly teach me how to be successful online, it did give me other skills that have translated to my success...thinking out of the box, technical skills for coding websites and software, how to write effectively, and more. You definitely don't need university education to be successful, but I don't think it will hurt!

I went for 1 semester. Twice. But I'm in the "public schooling is an outdated system and college is over-rated because there's absolutely nothing you can't find on youtube, amazon, itunes u, khan academy, tons of blogs, etc <- all of which are on our phones now, the library, or as an intern" camp. The idea that knowledge comes from the top-down, bits and pieces at a time, is an old outdated idea. College is a place to get laid and get drunk while creating massive debt for yourself. If you actually want to go there to study, everyone else getting laid and drunk is a distraction.

I completed my university and graduate education before the Internet was invented. However, my education helped me tremendously because I learned how to think, not what to think. That is essential no matter what you do. University education is not about a good job, it is about a good life--if you do it right. :-)

I have only kept up with philosophy going into university (with have my BA in June) because the act of reading dense and analytically complex arguments/ideas somehow translates to helping my problem solving ability.

When I compare myself and how i would see business opportunities before and after getting into philosophy and to me it's a world of difference. I see things that i know marketers in the same markets/niches don't see.

I'm also able to take criticism and shell it out constructively. You know, the way everyone says it's "supposed" to be?

I liken this experience to presenting one of my paper topics in front of a 25 student class. Though I knew my thesis and topic were strong the teacher destroyed me asking me about my topic and pulling apart my weak points until i had nothing left.

That was something I volunteered for (no one else wanted to go first, so whatever lol) and i got my ass handed to me, but I stuck around to learn from my failings to be ready for the next time around.

That's why I think a lot of IM'er fail. Too many failures will set you back, but you have to pull out a lesson of some sort from those failures. I don't think there are too many failures. There's only too many failures FOR YOU and you decide to pull out.

So I don't know, I think the act of reading philosophy and getting into verbal discussions has helped me (Socratic dialogue anyone :p) but it might not remotely be the same for you.

I won't be using my degree for much but it makes a wonderful conversation piece when i tell new acquaintances that i run a business when the "What are you going to do after graduation?" question comes up

    Indirectly yes, but not directly.
I am a licensed Industrial Teacher and worked in a manufacturing company for 10 years. I learned web promotion in company and other SEO stuffs. There is a probability that I couldn't get hired if I did not finished college so yes, it helped me indirectly.

I am 27, I honestly regret the whole last decade of my life. The first 5 years of this decade I never broke any rules, and regret that, and the last 5 years I kept to myself and I regret that too.

I regret university, I wouldn't want to do it now a £36,000 in fees alone, however I started with Comp Sci and graduated 5 years later with a BA in Media Studies....the only thing I learnt on that is how bitchy, back stabbing and fake human beings in general are (course was 95% women - silly immature 18/19 year olds).

I would go to Uni for my original course or something like a BSC in Business Management or Marketing, but I wouldn't go for something silly like "Surfing Science".

I don't feel university provided me with any value, online or off. I'm not sure I necessarily regret going, but at the same time, it did not help me any. I went to community colleges at first then a cheap in state university and paid as I went, so at least I did not end up with a mountain of debt like many do.

I learned my Internet/computer skills on my own, and many of my successes online came by way of dumb luck, just right place, right time.

Have to disagree with this too... everyone I know at Uni, even at different ones, they always end up doing their work in the last week before deadline, some people in the last day before deadline, I know someone who did their whole dissertation in 5 days!

Unfortunately, the curriculum in college has become outdated, so for me, no, college did not help for IM. I suppose one could argue that it did help shape my mindset or how I approach business related items. There should be more classes and even majors that reflect how the net is becoming a larger part of the world with each and every passing year. So much of what is offered in a standard business degree is very subjective as to whether or not it will apply to the job one is able to get. Entrepreneurial Internet Studies would be a timely offering.

I have an engineering degree and for the others that stated the same, Its the linear thinking that has helped the most for me, not to mention the tech stuff.

Going to college today I think is a different animal. you can stumble through and get a English or history major. Or you can look at the 5 year plan...

My son 18 started his first year. He wants to do what I do, he actually does do it already. He is going for a marketing degree. We both understand that is not going to teach him what he wants to learn. but he is in an environment to experiment. He can take photography classes and videography classes and color theory and psychology and any other subject that will be of use to his dreams.

I think as much as College is about the piece of paper, I am in a way trying to ensure for my sons that it is a adventure in education and broadening their thought and view of life. And if they learn something, that will be awesome to!

I went to College here in Toronto for 2 years to study "general business".

In my last 2 semesters, I dropped out cause I thought it was a waste of time and years later, I still feel that way.

Did that help me at all in my internet marketing career? No way.

When you get online and try to make money, school education has nothing to do with your success or failure.

You learn from everyday experience that you go through online.

      Sucks for you.

A lot of people go to college just because its forced on them (by parents / family). Or they do it so they have a 4 year excuse not to work. Or they do it to meet women. Or they do it for a dozen other reasons I don't have the time to talk about.

But there is a very small percent of people who actually go to college to learn. Because they genuinely enjoy learning and realize how valuable it is to BE EDUCATED and have a BALANCED EDUCATION. You don't get educated just by going to college. You get educated when you're genuinely motivated to learn.

I don't like the $40,000 of debt I was in after going to a private university. And I've managed to pay it off by now. But looking back, it was one of the smartest decisions I ever made in my life.

Not only did I go to a great school, but every single professor at my school was a doctor. And 90% of those professors were AWESOME PEOPLE. They were the most intelligent people I met in my entire life. They had such an intense passion for life and learning. They didn't just teach me about xxx subject, they taught me about LIFE.

Like my 1 psychology teacher who ALWAYS had a smile on her face. She was ALWAYS happy. And she was so unbelievably smart. She didn't just teach me about psychology, she taught me that its actually possible to wake up everyday with a smile on your face.

Or my religion professor who didn't just teach me about religion and culture. I was an atheist my entire life up until I met that guy. I never believed in god, never believed in any type of higher power. And he was NOT religious at all, but he taught me A LOT about life. And he was an agnostic. And I had such high respect for how smart this man was, that these days I no longer consider myself an atheist ... but an agnostic ... just like him. I still remember the day I asked him if he believes in god and he said verbatim, "Son, I've been teaching religion and philosophy for 30 years. And for 30 years noone has ever showed me proof that there is a god, whether its Muhammad or Krishna or the Catholic Saints. But at the same time, in 30 years, noone has ever proven to me that god doesn't exist". And idky, but that had a lifelong impact on the way I view religious people. Especially my own mother who is a very devoted Catholic. I now respect everyone. If don't think I'm better than anyone, whether you believe in god or you're an atheist.

College didn't just teach me how to think critically and analytically, but it also taught me how to think with an open mind.

After graduating from the university I found myself far less judgemental of people. Racist people, poor people, murderers, all types of people. I just don't judge people anymore like I did in highschool. But most importantly, college taught me how to BELIEVE IN MYSELF. And honestly, to me, that was worth all the debt.

People can say "you don't need to pay that much just to gain confidence in yourself" but I think thats bs. Because the university I went to was EXTREMELY challenging. TBPO, I thought I would NEVER get my degree. In my senior year there was courses I was retaking for a 3rd time thats how hard they were. Then there was my "critical discourse" class.... UGH GOD. I had such a SERIOUS PHOBIA of public speaking up until I took that class. I would shake, sweat, hyperventilate, my head would twitch, my face would twitch, etc etc. Most people take that course their sophmore year but I pushed it off till my senior year, and then I left school for 2 semesters just to avoid taking that 1 class. I couldn't graduate cause I refused to take that 1 public speaking course.

But I wound up finding an AWESOME professor, and I explained to her how I had an extreme phobia of public speaking... and she is the ONLY REASON I got through that class.

It wasn't even graduating that made me feel good. It was getting through the 1 class because for 4 years I stressed about it.

And the last day of that class a girl came up to me and said "I just wanted you to know, out of all the people in this class I looked forward to your speeches the most". And I said something like "you're full of shit". Then she went on and on about how good of a speaker I am... and that was another profound and life changing experience for me.

These days if I have to give speeches, I can actually say to myself afterwards "damn bro, you just killed it". I have CONFIDENCE in myself.

And I would NOT have the level of confidence I have today if I didn't graduate from that school. No effn way.

So to answer the OPs question, YES, 1000%, getting my degree helped my online career more than anything I can think of.

Its unfortunate to see people who say "college was a waste of money and time". Its basically the same thing as saying "learning is a waste of money and time".

And if you actually believe that learning is a waste of time and money, then I really don't know what to say. As much as I hate to judge, I would have to assume that you are NOT making any money right now with your business. To become a successful business owner, you NEED a STRONG passion for learning. You need a strong RESPECT for learning. So if you're the type to say "college is a waste of time", you either went to a shitty college, or you hate learning, or you hate everything about life.... orrr you're part of that rare 1% who has the brain of a genius.

I wouldn't say that University has helped me but it kinda was a waste of time ... especially since I'm doing something now that I enjoy that has nothing to do with what I took at school.

But honestly, University is not really mandatory to be successful online and judging by what some people said here in this thread, it definitely doesn't seem as though it's necessary.

I am was doing internship at a firm in web designing ,developing and SEO and I got the internship because of my college education. So yes I would say it gave some benefit .But what they teach at University is not really helpful here. I never believed in college education or university degrees. I always idealized that knowledge should be free and should not have constrains .You should be able to learn and do whatever you like not what is fed to you by institutions.

    Pardon my radical thoughts .

I am a 3rd year dental student one more year until I graduate. Prior to that I studied Bachelor of Medical Science and even did a Masters degree. All that is certainly not helping me with my online career. And at this moment I do not anticipate working as a full time dentist even once I graduate... I'd like to do charity dental work overseas... I'd say that high school and undergraduate studies were a complete waste of time. If I knew of the many opportunities back then I am certain I would have taken a different path ...

I've studied at the University level and am basically a lifelong student.

Lots of marketing gurus bash fundamental education, but I personally disagree.

Education has many practical benefits, from a networking and safety net standpoint.

Not to mention the education that you push yourself to obtain.

People always say "education is free" - which is true...

But I think the dedication is more important, no matter how you learn.

And if you're enrolled? That's dedication.

    Just my $.02 ramblings.

I would say it is very unique for everyone. For me personally it helped me tons. I would say networking, internships, resources were the main ones.

I believe that some people just don't know what they like or what they want to do so they just go for a random major to give them time to decide on a final solution.

As the time goes by they decide - eh might as well just go with this. But at the end if you don't really love what you do I don't think it could be sustainable.

Or, alternatively, perhaps I simply wanted to go to university to master an actual skill craft, but all I got was a bunch of outdated theoretical mambo jumbo with no real-world use in 2014 world.

You see, I did not enroll Business Management college to "open my mind" or to "see the world from another perspective", or to "learn how to think", or to "cultivate my mind", or whatnot. I actually enrolled Business Management to... learn how to freaking manage a real-world business (OMG WTF GASP!). And guess what? as far as that's concerned, I learned more about real-world business management within the first year of running my own business than in those 5 full years I spent in college studying Keynes, John Adams, the Taylorism model, Supply and Demand elasticity, production chain flows, and a myriad of other text-book stuff I never applied once in my actual business.

One of the core principles in business is ROI optimization... well, I think the ROI on university is crap!

I don't regret earning my university degree. In fact, it helped me with my business transactions. Let's face it, there's a bias when it comes to people with college degrees. They are perceived to exude professionalism. It helps a lot in forming good business relationships. The challenge is to stay true to the word professionalism.

My university education helped me with basic skills that ordinary people tend to neglect in the business field. Business writing is essential and a number of people don't pay special attention to it. Time management skills and business management concepts that can help in one's IM venture.

Critical and analytical thinking has helped a lot in my IM journey. You don't just accept and apply everything to your project. You need to research, select and reject concepts, applications or practices that don't apply to your situation.

Diplomatic skills that can benefit one's customer service skills. It's not just all about product knowledge and great technical skills. Every business rely on its good customer service for continuous business and customer retention. Without this skill, your business will not flourish.

I must say that we will not learn everything in the university. Life is a learning process. Learning is a continuous process. We'll never stop learning new things that will benefit us either on a short-term or long-term basis.

There are knowledge that can only be derived via the internet. There are many IM stuff that you can learn via this Warrior Forum. Educational institutions need to evolve. They must learn to adapt to the fast paced changes in various industries. They need to be flexible. The knowledge or courses being offered need to be relevant and current.

It boils down to the individual's willingness and initiative to learn new things. If the mind and heart of an individual is not sincere in learning then not even an expensive university education can provide profound changes to an individual's life.

I've never regretted going. But College is not trade school. It does not actually prepare you for job. That's not it's function. It never was. It's all about being expoosed to new opportunities, new ideas and new types of people.
But since it's not trade school, and doesn't take the place of trade school, it shouldn't be as expensive as it is.

Studying Internet marketing and Affiliate marketing are really based on 2 different aspects. Affiliate marketing is all about being a salesmen whereas Internet Marketing is really focused on growing an existing or start up company. One takes longer in study (IM) and the other is all about "implement this step now and make money" (AM).

It's just important to understand that their taught with 2 different purposes.

However if you are going to college i would suggest you put your notes online in an article format, build a niche doing that and just rank them. That could possibly be the fastest way to get started.

YES college did help though. Just depends on what your taking. I studied web development and Internet Marketing 4 Years. The biggest issue i had was thinking small.

I think the one valuable trait gained from university is the ability to handle tough challenges and be less likely to give up. Determination is definitely an asset with online business.

Hmm, this is a very interesting topic. My answer is that attending University did enhance my online business, but indirectly.

My area of focus at University was not computer related so much of what I learned did not directly improve or enhance my online business.

BUT....what I did learn at University was how to focus to accomplish a challeneging goal, how to push myself to learn new things, and how with enough determination and the right attitude that anything is possible.

Now, do you have to goto University to learn these things? Absolutely not, but that is just my personal experience. That is the place that I learned it so I do think that it enhanced my online career.

I studied Architecture for a few months before making my escape. It gave me very little, and I wish I started freelancing sooner than I did.

I have an entire post on my blog (see sig), called "Why Leaving University Was the Best Thing I Ever Did".

I actually have learned a lot from college that has translated to my online business. I am comfortable around and using computers, including learning and using new programs. I am a fast typist and can research things like a pro on the internet. I can manage my time and have great writing skills. All of these things are direct results of my higher education.

So while you may not be able to apply Trigonometry or Calculus to your online business, you certainly have gained valuable skills that cross over from physical college work and life to your online work and life.

Defo! Well I did a degree in IT support so was quite related and was a whole lot of web development/online marketing modules which I learnt so much from. Not only that but I think by going to University you get a better outlook on life. Don't think i'd even have an online business/career if I didn't go to Uni.

The richest man i have meet, he was in IM, when he heard and was going to college, his advice to me, was get out.. it took me 5 years later..

No school does not help on anything (if you want to be happy), they are just giving your ideas about the world there is a big illusion..

Every country on this planet, if you say no to school, the gourverment will come and take your child..

The school is made, because some people need workers.. Dont fall in that trap..
I cry for every child on this planet, i really do

Interesting what i read from some IMers in here. No doubt university days was an experience that shaped me to be the man I am today.

In fact, I went back to my M.S., and it helped me even more.

University is not only about what you learn in class, but about the whole experience. I am not going to lie, before I got to my B.S. degree I had the same question, but now that i completed my degrees , i see the real value behind going to a university

Yes, My Four years in the University helped me a lot in my online career.
Let Suppose you did not attend university, and want to keep your online business on the go!
you will face a lot of problems as i have experienced, in university you learn many things not necessarily part of books (Lectures) - how to deal with others (known and unknown)
How to find the best way, how to boost your juniors to work better.

OR may be its just related to my business LOL!
