Sell My Site or Keep It?

Okay, so as my title says...I'm really unsure whether to sell my site or not.
It's 2 years old now. It's generating around $600 - $1,000 a month. I haven't had to update it in forever. And it still gets over 100K page views and over 30K UV per month. It's very high quality content, no spammy backlinks and it's survived every one of Google's updates. Actually, it's done better after pretty much each one.

But I am REALLY uninterested in the topic now and by now I really doubt if I can force myself to build it up to generate even more traffic for me. And I'm scared that if I don't work on it - which I really don't want to anymore - it'll slowly lose traffic and revenue and I'll be left wishing I'd sold it when it was doing well.

I could also really use the money to invest into new websites I'm actually interested in.

But then again, I don't feel so good about losing that source of monthly income...

I don't know. What would you guys do? And why?

Well, if you're uninterested in the topic then yeah I would sell it but if somehow, you're interest would re-spark, considering you've rarely touched it recently, there's heaps of room for potential!

If it's well niched' I'd try a teespring campaign.

(I'm some-what obsessed with teespring right now lol)

Well, whatever you decide, good luck!

I have got to be honest here and say this is right up there with one of the most silly things I have ever read!

There was a thread not to long ago about the increased rates at 'Flippa' there were some of us digging into the sold listings and there was a site that was making $1800 a month that sold for get this, $138.00 that is not a typo, One Hundred Thirty Eight Dollars!

To keep up with the site you have would take what? 5 hours a week? maybe 10? and it is producing $10,000 a year... take out your list management fees and your hosting, that is right in there at $18.00 to $36.00 and hour depending on YOUR time.

Instead of throwing that away would it not make more sense to go ahead with your plans to develop your "New" latest and greatest interest, and allow this boring no good for nothing $10,000 a year producer pay for your efforts?

Better yet use your existing boring $10,000 a year producing site to act as leverage in your new sites. Once you have the "New" and exciting up and running share it with your existing list.

This would be what is called in business, extending your BRAND.

Stop with the I'm bored and mew mew I'd miss it crud. Start looking at this as if it were a business. ( It is producing $10,000 and you are doing nothing )

Better yet... you show me proof that is what your site is doing, and Ill throw down $1000 right now!

And it's "silly" people like you that keep Flippa's scammy sellers in business. Why would anyone in their right mind sell a site making $1800 a month for $138? That is just stupid and doesn't happen. It would 110% have been a scam - Flippa is full of them.

@ OP - it really depends on your personal situation. I have a few sites in my portfolio like that and tend to just run them as I don't need the cashflow. If I had a particular project that required investment and I could sell one of the sites to raise capital instead of borrowing - that's what I would do. There's no point me (or anyone else) telling you what to do with the site.

Before you sell, it's best to optimize the site's earnings as much as possible. Improving traffic can be quite a lot of work so I can understand why you wouldn't want to do that - but testing ad placements is really simple to do and can add a lot of value when you come to sell (e.g. an increase in CPMs from $10 to $12) could increase your sales price by 20% (equating to thousands of dollars).

Unless you're hard-pressed for new capital, I'd say get a guy to work on it for you for a fix pay + a small share of any profit he helps you bring in through his effort.

It's a passive income that you can keep without much hassle.

That is what I would have done anyway.

    Outsource it!

Hire a VA to create monthly updates and handle the social and leave it on autopilot. Then you don't need to lose your income stream.

I remember one website that was the go-to site and top of their niche that was offered aprox. $20K and the owner refused it. I for one thought the owner had a great idea and I was waiting for the site to update their old script and layout. Instead it just sat there, nothing happened and other sites/fb groups eventually took over.
This thread made me take a look at the site and now it's gone, and instead it's just a small personal site and looks like it was made in the 90's...

So don't make the same mistake - if you really don't think putting a few hours into it for a up to $1000 monthly income, then yes, sell it.

    My 2 cents.

If you are interested in your sites niche and your site earn a good amount then don't sell it and try to make some more money and as above says you can also hire someone on fix pay or share some profit with so he can do work on your site and you can focus on other things.

If you are going to sell that website I would be more than glad to buy it. But I recommend not selling the website. If you don't have time to update just hire someone to update it for you.

I suggest you learn seo and look at your site and write down the things you must recover to not be touched by any Google update

Comes down to a value judgement I guess. What's worth more to you - ongoing passive income from the site as it is (perhaps after deducting the cost of outsourcing new content if you go that way) or selling it for what you can now. Only you can decide......
