How many plugins are too many for a WP website?

I am preparing to create a WP website using The AutoFacebookMarketer Plugins as well as a few others. This is the first real outsourcing (YAY) that I'm going to do.

As I've mentioned before, I'm a salesletter story in the making. I've spent thousands and have tons of digital dust on my external HD. Right now, I'm going through my plugins and recommended plugins lists to put together a list to give to my designer of the plugins I want to include.

Here are my ideas based on common sense...

One Plugin Per Function, meaning

One Paypal Button Maker,

One Squeeze Page Maker

One Tweet Poster ETC,

Now I'm also thinking/planning on including at least one of the monster
Plugin conglomerations like WP Simplicity.

Sooo, how many plugins are too many?

Thanks,
J. P.

There isn't really a set number of plugins you should try to avoid. It's more of what the plugins are doing and how much resources they require. You can have dozens of simple plugins and your site will run fine but can also one bulky plugin that crashes the whole thing. The only way to know for sure how your site will run with those plugins is to test it.

1 plugin that you do not need is too much.

Each plugin puts extra load on the site and increases security risks.

So you should make sure that you only have the plugins installed that you really use.

I have never used more than 10 plugins on any one site and I have always researched the ones that I have used thoroughly

The only plugins that you need are the ones that actually perform a task that your website can't do without. Anything else is redundant and wasteful of resources.

I would say you have too many as soon as they start affecting on an easy, clean user experience. Sometimes, less is more...

Use one of the free page speed testers to gauge how much is too much... Depends on your hosting plan & a number of other things so if your pages are bogged down, you have too many running / not optimized correctly Stay on top of your page load speeds!! But this is the most simple test in my book...
