Default I am so close to quitting! Someone...Anyone...talk me down!

I am so incredibly frustrated right now, I am just beside myself. I've been at this Internet Marketing thing for a few months and nothing, nada, zilch. Just a lot of late nights spent reading, writing article after article, submitting them all over the place (I use a service to deliver to directories, but there are still a few I have to manually submit), doing the backlinks thing (that takes about half a day per article to do, and yes, I know I can outsource that, but why outsource it and pay someone else to do it when I've been doing it myself and seeing no results...just putting me more in the hole. I mean results as in sales, the backlinks tactic works)

I'm currently promoting a product that when you type in my targeted keyword, you can find 5 of my articles (all different ones) on the first page of google (out of thousands and thousands of pages!) AND a PPC ad on the side. Pretty exciting, right?! So, what gives?

BTW, I paused that particular campaign because the click-throughs were through the roof, but guess what? Clickbank balance, still at zero.

At this point, I think I need a business in a box or some plug and play type deal or someone to take me by the hand and say here's this stuff, this is what to do with it and why and have a great time making money. I'm not scared of working long hours and working hard and being dedicated to something, but when you're going at it for months and you're seeing NO results, then you have to start wondering.

What comes to my mind is that maybe it's the products I'm choosing. I'm going with things that interest me (my hobbies, if you will) and products that I can relate to as a private investigator. I wanted to start off article marketing because it was the easiest and cheapest way to start (in my opinion) and if I was going to have to pump out articles on a regular basis, I wanted the articles to be about something that I'm interested in or have experience with so I wouldn't have to struggle to write the articles. I did extensive research of my niche and it seemed highly probable that I could convert these information seekers into buyers. I didn't go into the "make money online" niche, but maybe that's where I need to be. I mean, I've made some people some pretty heavy commissions, I know this because I'm looking at my credit card statement as I write this. Where's the reciprocity? What did they do to sell me on a product that I can't seem to replicate?

So, what is your advice to someone who isn't new to Internet Marketing, but isn't successful at it yet. Someone who has the time (and a little money..not a lot) to dedicate to making this work. Will it honestly take me a year or two of going at it to make this work? Seriously. Or do I have to forgo paying the mortgage this month to get a "guru" on the phone for an hour? LOL

Okay, I've rambled on enough. I actually feel a little better getting this off my chest. I was going to blog about it, but since my readers expect me to be happy go lucky and positive all the time, I don't want to risk losing any of them.

So, you can start the advice giving session.....NOW!

You already answered your own question.

Wahgypsy,

Never ever quit. What you are going through now happens to the best internet marketers on this forum. I went through the same thing, and burnt the midnight oil, and blew money like there was no tomorrow. But keep learning. I have found that Website flipping is a good way to make money. You can build clickbank-ready sites and sell them online. I did it and it worked very well for me.

How much time and energy are you devoting to keyword research? You say you are getting to page one with your articles but are these articles written around very targeted keywords that are micro niche related and are liable to convert? There are keyword tools you can use to check the commercial value.

It's just that sometimes this can be a bit of a stumbling block. I wasn't very successful in my first couple of months IM'ing but once I started to go deeper into the niche with more targeted keywords I started to make progress.

Honestly, most people will have roughly the same story as yours in their first few months marketing online apart from the odd lucky ones. Keep at it and try to cut down on the reading and learning and put your knowledge to use. Once you have a steady stream of articles and other promotional tools and backlinking, you should start to see sales if you are sure your product is in a selling niche.

Keywords, adsense, articles...yeah all that stuff is cool....but unless the product is something that people want...and you can convince them to buy it from you...forget about it.

Dearest WAHGYPSY,

Don't give up just yet. What you are doing is not using what your competition is using. See, researching forums and all, people try it on their own without knowing the basics that actually get the articles high volume and conversions.

There is so much to learn in this. Why don't you try out the Wealthy Affiliate Training Program for a dollar today and use it for seven days---tell what you just told us here in this forum--they will ask to see your websites and articles and give you the feedback you NEED. You are doing something wrong..Big Wrongs...Although, you are still doing something right since people hit your site.

Your bounce rate is probably high..which means your site is not set up to convert visitors into customers. I am not one of the experts at all. I am new.I was like you and started by researching and reading forum posts and wasted an entire year until I shot in the last desperation of darkness and paid for correct training. I had to pay the entire 39.00 startup, but at least you are here when there is a Trial!

You can get the exact help you need. In fact, you can even ask the Two young starters of the online university for help--Kyle and Carson--and they will actually HELP you! Why not take advantage of the chance today?

Because, really--any post you will get is just one dot to connect to what you are doing--you need training, Dearest. Someone that knows exactly how to do it, check out your work so far--and guide you in the correct direction. Hope to see your success soon.

Hi Wahgypsy,
First things first, you are not alone. Infact you are among 100% of people who find frustration on the net initialy. 95% Quit before anything takes shape and the other 5% go on strugling for a while then make it happen.

I gues what am trying to say is "Never give up" stick at it and soon you too will be amongst the elite 5% Internet marketers

"Been there, done that, fell down and got trodded upon but get up I have and go on I must for tomorrow shall be my day!" is the mentality I try to keep.

Consider providing a service to others instead of promoting other's products. Sticking to just being an affiliate you are doing nothing but build the Guru's business and not yours. build your own business, service or product and above all your own list thats where the iNet money is.

Good luck.

Oh, and another thing, WAHGYPSY--you are probably not in the correct niche. You can start something completely new and has no relevance at all to investigative reporting---you should be promoting HOT PRODUCTS with certain keyword usage.

Once you get that going with a successful campaign, you can return to what you like. You will learn exactly how to beat your competition if you take advantage of an opporutnity that is staring at you now. It only seven days, I realize--but take down emails, take down website addresses, write down notes from each expert, write down everything you are doing wrong and put an answer under it when you get the answer from the forum.

The best thing for you is real, live, always available forum members who know EXACTLY HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE.

Okay, not a sales pitch..just really want you to be able to get more than a couple of the dots to connect. I mean, without knowing what you are doing, the dots just fade before your eyes and you get to the point of frustration and then despair and then quitting. I do not want to see you do this because you obviously have what it takes to succeed in this . Go Get 'Em !

I don't think a 'business in a box' is the way to go anyway.
In fact there is no such thing as a 'business in a box'.

Keep plugging away but like any business there are no shortcuts...you have to make the hard yards.

Wow, thanks for responding, guys. I'm a Warrior Forum newbie. It came highly recommended.

I'll try to answer some of your questions.

More than half of the business I get as a P.I. (private practice) is related to investigating a spouse's whereabouts and confirming whether or not they are cheating or gambling again or drinking again, etc (when I worked for corporations, it was more of in-depth background checks, investigating insurance claims, etc) So, that's the market I'm in right now. I have a pretty starving crowd offline and I thought, great, I could reach them online as well.

I spent days researching keywords. I used every free keyword tool I could find and compared the results. The results are in the millions for cheating spouse, infidelity, extramarital affairs, but of course, I broke that down to search terms that one might use if they are trying to find out they are being deceived.

I'm finding that doing this online, it's best to assure the person that they indeed want to know. That has been a bit of an adjustment for me because when people walk into my office, they are pretty much dead-set on finding out, that's why they even bothered coming to see me. That is not necessarily the case when someone clicks on the links in my article or even my PPC ad, apparently.

I buy every product I market/promote to make sure that the advice, tips, and tricks that are in the book are of substance and ones that I use myself or recommend using. It seems a bit counter-intuitive to pay me hundreds of dollars to investigate for you when you can do so yourself for the fraction of the cost by buying a book that would show you how (even some of the software or equipment you could purchase yourself would be cheaper than hiring someone.)

When I started out, my articles weren't this way, but now that I know better, my articles are more than just about the signs of cheating or the reasons for cheating, they revolve more around the fact that you should be pro-active and take matters into your own hands and find out. But finding out if a spouse is deceiving you is a tough thing to do, psychologically. There's the agonizing about your suspicions and "the signs", then there's the what will I do if he/she is cheating and realizing the impact it can have on your future, on the children, on your finances, etc and what if he's not, does this make you a bad person for being suspicious and going as far as to spy?

So while my clients are beyond that stage and are ready to take that step and hand me money, the online crowd may not be as ready or I'm not doing a good job at targeting those who are ready for that step, obviously. So, lately, my articles have been more about reassuring that yes, you should find out, why you should find out and how you can find out without even leaving your home. I also point out that it's not the end of the world, and, in fact, many couples are able to make it through it and find a renewed sense of appreciation for their marriage. I've been trying to make finding out as non-threatening to their psyche as possible.

I love this market and I'd like to stay in it, but I really don't know. Maybe I can come back to it after I've made some money. I've not only marketed ebooks through clickbank, I have also promoted software and equipment/gadgets through CJ that I personally use. I have written how-to articles and review articles, since I have first hand experience and didn't have to buy the product first.

No, I don't have a pre-sell page. I do my pre-selling in my articles, towards the end where I let the reader know that I have the solution to their problem. My articles point to different domains that get redirected to the sales page or merchant's website. (Is this not a good thing to do?)

I have a small list, but they aren't necessarily niche-related. They are either from my blog (where people follow the trials and triumphs of a newbie internet marketer. haha!!) or from a squeeze page that has nothing to do with this niche. I was testing out ISPG, put it up on a few traffic exchanges and got some leads, but those folks are more in the make money online niche because of the free report I was offering. So I haven't really tapped into the list for its marketing potential and it's not a very large list either since I haven't tried to drive traffic to that page in quite a few weeks.

Yes, I'm a Wealthy Affiliate member. I haven't been for long, but I was really motivated to amp up my article campaigning once I started Wealthy Affiliate. Good job at recommending it, if I weren't already there, I would have definitely taken you up on the offer.

Realizing that I've invested so much time (and money), I'd really like to see this through. I also feel that I have so much more to learn. I'd only quit after I feel as though I've exhausted all possibilities.

The formula is simple: develop a good offer, drive targeted traffic to your site, using good sales copy: make them think they can't live without your product and purchase it.

Executing this simple formula, is of course easier said than done.

Your product seems killer...hell...I almost want it just based on your description...and I'm not even worried at all about my wife...

Your traffic situation...I don't know...all I can tell you is this: keep writing articles and submitting them on e-zine and other top article directories...with a link to your sales page in the resource box...

I'm gonna get hung out to dry for saying this probably...but oh well...

Be a little less "hung up" about keyword choices and focus instead on writing good articles with helpful content...helpful well written content drives traffic, not keywords.

Article marketing is the cheapest (free!) source of traffic you can get. If you have lots of time but not so much cash it's the way to go.

So kudos to you for focusing on that.

Now...

...the only piece of the puzzle left is your sales page. You have to really whip up a good sales pitch on it and make your audience want to buy your product!

Without seeing your website to give it a proper evaluation, that's all I can say for now.

I must tell you that over half of the products I try to promote fail. The trick to succeeding for most online is diversity. You've learned the basic techniques for getting traffic - now start using your new found techniques on different products. You'll be surprised at how easy it comes once you happen upon a product that sells.

Here's my opinion:

You need to have your own website in this niche. Go register a killer domain now.

You should send article traffic to YOUR site, and use the backlinks to rank YOUR site.

You need to build a list of subscribers so they can receive YOUR weekly newsletter with tips and product recommendations.

You should be creating a product of your own. I bet your articles combined in a report would probably be better than some of the products out there.

Isn't there a forum on the wealthy affiliate site? I'm just asking because I was thinking about joining as they sound so good, but if you are having to resort to asking at other forums (obviously warrior forum is a great choice) then it makes me wonder how good the WA is.

I heard the guys at WA were quite active in regards to evaluating your sites /article writing and giving feedback where necessary?

Anyway, it sounds like you really know your stuff and it is just a matter of tweaking here and there and not giving up.

I'm still quite new to IM and it took me a good few months of writing articles to start seeing the sales trickle in. Then I started linking to the articles that were doing well to put them higher up the google charts.

I hope you find a method that works for you

wahgypsy, dont give up because if you stay open-minded you will find a way :-) anyway I know what u r going thru & I have been doing this for over 6 yrs with little results but some hope. Despite all the programs and the systems out there on the net, there aren't hardly any step by step programs. You really have to wing it so ta speak... U got to look at other avenues to get traffic other than article marketing (still good if you got software you prepare articles at a snap), try solo ads, traffic exchanges, stay away from Google PPC if you can. If you got any questions just PM me. Best wishes :-)

Oh, I didn't post this to warrior because I wasn't getting help elsewhere. I just happened to be in the forum reading another thread when I opened my CC bill. LOL Wealthy Affiliate has been great for me. If you're going to join to test it out, do it before Friday. I'm just not active (yet) in the forums, which I know is an incredible resource, but I find myself into the other parts of Wealthy Affiliate a whole lot more than the forums. There's just great information all over that site. I'm still doing the 8 week action plan, so I'm just focused elsewhere.

Thanks for the input. That's some pretty good advice. I need to go back to the drawing board and change the way I'm going about doing this. I know it can be done and I know that I can do it, I'm just trying to put all the pieces together successfully.

My take.

It's all about confidence.

You're new to the IM thang, so you're worried about failing.

Forget that. Fail quick, fail often, but learn from your mistakes.

Your niche (P.I.) is hot. You've got the skillz. Use them.

Don't sweat the detail. Sweat the content.

You are a gifted writer, which puts you above most.

You know the hopes, desires, and concerns of your market -- which puts you above most.

Put out a blog, write a free report. Heck, make a 47 point checklist for the concerned spouse...just do something, and promote it.

Some portion of the world's population NEEDS your insider knowledge.

Give some of it to them.

Then sell 'em the rest

Steve

From one private investigator to another let me tell you there is MASSIVE amounts of opportunity for you.

I know guys in this field doing a million per year.

However, there is a lot of garbage products and very devious competition surrounding this niche.

If you want to make it in this niche, you'll need to really get savvy at marketing. The article submissions and back links alone ain't gonna do you much good.

You're gonna need the advice of someone like Dan Kennedy in this field. You need to develop a persona that others can't F%#@ with. (Pardon my English). But seriously, you have to be a pretty hard core marketer in this niche and know how to push buttons.

The fact that you are a P.I. gives you tons of leverage over the majority of affiliates too as you are actually much more credible. My thinking is your copy must not be strong enough and you aren't pre-selling the offers well enough.

Think of it this way....

If you needed to make 5 sales by next week or you'd lose custody of your kids (assuming you have kids), how would you market that product?

Take that mind set with you when you are preselling any of these products.

My guess is, the articles may have good content but in terms of closing the sale they are probably very wimpy. Time to toughen up! And I hope the tough love resonates with you.

Best of luck.

Try giving something away to your crowd (a book or something or a chapter of your book) and then get their email and name. Then every few days send them an email giving them more info and a sales off for your book or something you are selling. Giveaways have been great for me to build my list. Once the list is built then you can keep sending emails to market to them.

Nothing wrong with quitting some of my best moments happen after I let go and let God.
People think quitting is a bad thing it isn't, giving up on the other hand may not be good advice in fact it is probable the worst thing to do.

If you are on the right path for you things usually get better if you hang in 1 more minute, 1 more day, 1 more week, 1 more month and sunshine.

Knowledge is fine but by itself who cares, when a person has empathy with a market the market feels this and as you establish yourself as a source for solutions like bees to honey they will come.

If you just need some money to keep going your abilities on this forum and others would be a GOLDMINE.

Writing, researching and all the other skills you have developed can provide you income like yesterday, offer your skills for cash. The example of your communication in this thread is proof that you are equally if not more qualified than some who are charging the highest fee's and making the most money right here in the Warrior Forum.

My business is growing slowly - like a snail - but it's because I just keep learning. The best advice I can give is Never Give Up. I know, everyone has said that. And also, find a MENTOR! Pick someone you know is successful, and then get in a class and pick their brain.

I truly hope you begin to see more success,
Tom

wahgypsy,

When I read your post, I could tell how frustrated you were.. I am here to tell you that if you give up now, you will be blowing everything that you worked for. Too many times I have heard the story... It goes like this, "Had I quit when I wanted to, I would not be here today!" Most people throw in the towel right before they have the breakthrough that allows them to make it big. If you have to do it day by day for now that fine, just say hey... I can do this today... Tomorrow will take care of itself til I get there. You can do this! Might I suggest that if you keep doing the same things every day that you will keep getting the same result. Maybe mix things up a little with your approach or find a new way to do what you are doing. Maybe get into a mastermind group where you can bounce ideas off of people and get idea's from others. Just never give up... I call it the relentless pursuit of your passion. Never let it go!

To Your Success,
Clint Anderson

wahgypsy,

Great smile. Never stop smilin'! It helps to improve a mood.

Many people before you, in all walks of life, have been in the same shoes you are in now, wondering the same things.... if you can do it, is it worth it, can I succeed, etc, etc.

I just wanted to say that when you are thinking like that, it means you are getting close, because often in life the things we want the most tend to seem out of reach, but in reality, if we only stuck with it a little while longer, our progress gets us close enough to grasp the dream at hand.

One thing defeat, loss or failure can never triumph over...

...A person who never gives up.

Persist until you succeed.

I feel your frustration, because even at this moment in time I expected that I would be whole lot better off financially wise then when I first started online 10 months ago, and to a degree I have been, but it could be much better. That being said I love internet marketing, it took me almost 8 months before I made a ClickBank sale. I often dream about my sites and what I need to do or try, and I think it's that passion that has kept me knocking at that door of success, because without that I would have given up a long time ago.

My advise is keep doing what your doing, continue to educate yourself and surround yourself with other online marketers who will help and want you to succeed. Don't let all your effort go in vain, eventually you'll turn those road blocks into stepping stones.

Maybe you can pick a mentor or pick a Marketer you respect and promote the heck of that single marketer as much as you can. You will certainly get his/her attention and they may assist you to take it to the next level personally.

I have been doing internet marketing for a couple of years off and on and its hard. The most ive learned are from my failures which helped focus me in beter directions.

It sounds like your doing PPC and also taking in traffic from articles. Are your PCC keywords at least 4 words long. I know by doing PCC you can waste a lot of money with 2-3 words very fast.

For articles are the words your using get daily traffic? If a keyword has 20-50 searches a day and under 30k results in google thats super.

Hope you start making money soon.

You didn't come all this way just to quit did you? If you quit now then everything you have done will have been for nothing, all the hard work would have been a waste of time. Do you really want that?

Hi Wahgypsy!

After hearing some of your story here on the forum I can see that you definitely have been working hard on your business. As someone who sells online myself I can relate. It is difficult to keep yourself strong and make it work. It takes time, effort, patience, and you need to be the survivor to achieve.
My suggestion to you - which may or may not be a consideration - is something that I not only have done - but have done for others as well. Take all of your knowledge of investigations, catching the cheating types, surveillance, etc., and sit down and actually record a set of CDs for marketing. In your case you could probably create about 3 (just a quick thought - you may have tons of info to make even more)-
1) The signs of a cheating spouse/lover.
2) Ways to catch the cheating spouse/lover.
3) The outcome - and what to do (maybe legally) in this situation.

All of this is simple and can be recorded nicely at home in a quiet room with a well set up PC/Laptop, a simple free audio record/mix program like Audacity (please Google for download link) and mic system. If you do not have the voice for this type of thing - find a friend who can read your written script (which you should have handy to record off of anyway).

CD packaging is not that difficult either. I will PM you some of the apps I have used to do the job in the past if you'd like.

I'm not sure if I missed any steps or vitals on this here - PM me if you have any questions.

I definitely think you could kill with a website created around a personal CD product.
It's cheap to produce, and you would be selling at about a 150% markup!

Just my thought - hope it inspires! -

Never Surrender!

- D -

Going on the information about yourself that you have given, I do belive you will succeed big time.

Your personality comes across well in your writing and you understand the human (emotional) elements involved in your field.

I would say, don't make your blog about a struggling IM'er, but DO make it about being a private investigator. Relating to and helping those people who are in painful relationships is your strong point. Go with it.

Talk about their pain and how you will help them resolve it. As others have posted, make your own product. You have the knowledge and writing skills to do that.

Start with small reports if you have to, and work your way up. Seriously, I really do feel that you could do very well with information products in the PI niche.

If you quit we're gonna send a PI to investigate why gave away a great career.

I know what you're going through. PPC on Adwords flogging Clickbank products can send you broke pretty quick. But what if you knew the successful campaigns? What if you knew what keywords and copy was working for the so-called super-affiliates? I've mucked around with "Market samurai", "SpyFu", "Affiliate Elite" - even signed up for Chris Carpenter's horribly expensive (and flawed) GoogleCashDefective at a potential $2600+ a year. But forget all that. There's a new spy tool about to be released in a couple of days - PPCBully. I've been trialling it over the past few days and I tell you what - this is killer. I'm just cloning successful campaigns but most importantly I'm targeting successful (i.e. paying) 5 cent keywords and direct-linking (P.M. me and I'll show you exactly how to do it). Click on my signature. Get PPCBully and get some runs on the board. Once you see the Clickbank sales I think you'll forget all about quitting.

The nice thing about this type of business is each new website or page you set up is like a little cash register waiting to ring a sale. As you get more and more in place the sales increase. It all takes time. I don't believe in get rich quick schemes. I also agree that you can't wait too long either or you might as well get a real job. I would also have some focus and get to know specific niches where you can develop tricks to improve your performance.

Good luck and like the man just said - use your signature in these forums to get inbound links and clicks.

You're at the Warrior Forum. The fact that you're here means you're not alone, so there's no reason you can't succeed.

Internet Marketing is probably the hardest job there is, but once you take off, there's really no stopping.

Most people quit because they've bit off more than they can chew - they don't take the time to put it together for whatever reason, or no reason at all.

I strongly suggest you check out the Mind Warrior forum. Making money requires organization, empowerment and maturity, and we help each other achieve those things. It all starts with YOU, and YOUR personal drive (and maybe a little caffeine )

In all that you do, know your True INTENT...

wahgypsy, you've got two choices. Either give up and spend the rest of your life doing whatever. Or just keep at it. You sound like you're taking the latter option, so good on ya.

It took me about 4 months to make some level of consistent sales because I had no strategy. I was just doing lots of random stuff that never really worked out.

My advice, focus on a solid strategy that will allow you to build something solid. Going around submitting articles is ok, but it's not a business. It can be a part of a business, but shouldn't be the only thing you're doing.

Also, you don't need to mortgage your house to get a guru on the phone. I know of someone who'll spend around an hour on skype with you for around $10. PM me for more info.

Hope that helps.
