Ok I'm totally oblivious to the 301 world and I'm going to be doing some reading up on this topic. My question is, what significance does having 301 redirects have on your SEO and is it good practice to redirect them to high PR relevant sites? Is it better to do that than actually have links on your page to the same thing? What are good practices for 301 and maybe even 404 redirects to raise PR if at all...

Typically, 301 permanent redirects are used when a page or entire site has been moved. It tells the search engines to crawl content from the new location and forget about the old one. Most webmasters use 301 so they don't lose rank in the search engines, and also because previous visitors might have bookmarked links into their site. We have used it on some of our sites with good results, although Google will sometimes drop the pages for a few days, and then they return under the new domain. If you haven't moved anything, then use standard links. 301 will eventually cause the search engines to stop crawling the page or site that issues the redirect. |

I don't think 404 have anything to do with seo. I use a custom 404 page on my sites just so i don't loose the visitor.
