Brainstorming for a niche blog

HI all

I"m Alyssa. I am a virtual assistant and I've been online for a while, but never delved into the world of internet marketing much. I want to start a niche blog and I've been trying to determine with my background and expertise what that might be. I'm a former youth and children's minister, spent some time teaching and I have 3 kids under the age of 10.

Here's my brainstorming for topics:

I have done the brainstorm exercises and here's what I've come up with:

Journaling

Bible Study

Writing

cooking

spiritual gifts

personality

Relationships

Decorating

Anxiety / coping with anxiety

my kids

Kids apps

technology

Then it hit me. I don't really have anything that I Do that is a hobby, except playing games and such with my kids. We love finding new apps and challenging each other. Right now all my kids are into minecraft and we're learning about it. Just that in itself is a niche. So My idea is to write a blog about Kids Apps and Kids & Technology and what apps are best for what age group and how you can protect your child in this CYBER world we live in and still let them have fun!

Thoughts?

    Alyssa,

You may want to start checking out the Google Ad Planner Tool right away and see the number of searches for the keywords that come to your mind. It would do you a lot good if you would narrow that down by geography. The bigger question is... how do you plan to monetise your blog?

In case you want to go for AdSense, you'd want to target the keywords that have HIGH competition.

Another thing you could do is get the kids' apps' developers to pay you for an advertorial or review of their apps. But, this will work well once you've got substantial traffic. Also, the likelihood of this depends on the monetisation power of the apps themselves. Are they paid apps? Or do the developers make significant revenues from these apps?

Sounds like a good idea! If that is something you do then you will find it much easier to write about it. Im sure there are lots of mums out there searching for apps for their kids to play on!

Your idea of writing about kid's apps and pointers to keep kids safe etc. sounds like a good idea. I agree with the comment to think about what YOU want out of the blog (monetize it or just do it for the love (creative outlet).

I have two blogs: one specific to my re-creation business and the other which is extensive writing from the heart. I tried to monetize one, but its not really going anywhere. I was hesitant to monetize because depending on the intent of the blog, monetizing it might be off-putting for some of your followers.

I'd like to follow you on your blog and we could share pointers too.

    Hey Alyssa,
A lot of the niches you uncovered in your brainstorming are very capable of earning for you.
But you clearly stated what you spend a lot of your time on, and enjoy - games, finding apps, and challenging each other (with your kids). I would strongly encourage you to follow that. With your background I'm sure that simply starting a blog would be satisfying. Once you build up a following, monetizing that would be very easy.
I don't know too many parents who DON'T spend money on games and apps for their kids. And the 'app' world is just getting started - fun and challenge for minds of all ages.

Would encourage you to get started in an area you're comfortable and knowledgeable with, and just take it from there.

Thanks everyone I definitely want to make money off of it. I would say at least $100-500 a month. I would like to monetize through affiliate marketing, Google Adsense and sponsorships and ad sales.

    Everyones given some great advice,

    Alyssa,

$500/month is a VERY achievable number with niche blogs. I recommend just taking what advice you've been given here and getting straight into it!

You'll learn SEO, keyword research, etc along the way, there's plenty of stuff on youtube to help with that.

Don't overwhelm yourself with too many topics. Start with one blog until you get a feel for a good, working process, then you can start on more blogs.

Like the above poster, imo, it's VERY important to love what you're writing about or it'll just feel like a drain on your life to have to update it everyday/week.

    ~ All the best!

blog about what ever you're most passionate about, that's what makes a blog successful in the long wrong. If your only goal is to make money, you'll likely get burned out and will stop working on it, which is the death signal for a blog. In order to be successful, it takes weeks or months of blogging consistently on a daily basis, so make sure it's something you really love writing about.

Before you decide that the kids apps is going to be your niche check whether it's a viable and profitable niche to enter first.

You need to look at demand - number of searches per month in Google for related terms, other blogs in the niche, active forums, big social media hubs / groups, products on sale, money being spent.

Are your target audience easy to reach online?

Is there some sort of problem that people in the niche need help with? If not is there a great pleasure or happiness present? Pains and pleasure niches are the most profitable.

    Is it an evergreen niche?

Are their already people competing in this niche? There should be as it's a sign of a healthy market. If there's not then why aren't they? Can you offer something different from them?

Can you continue to create content for years to come on the topic?

[QUOTE=adavant;8933536]Journaling, Bible Study, Writing, cooking, spiritual gifts, personality, Relationships ,Decorating, Anxiety / coping with anxiety, my kids, Kids apps, technology[QUOTE]

SO lets break this down. Journaling and writing: this explains why a blog would be a good fit for you. Bible Study and Spiritual gifts: An obvious center in your life, A set of values. Personality, Relationships, My kids: Family and friends. Kids Apps, Technology: Using technology, apps to grow and learn. Cooking and Decorating: Very motherly things. Anxiety / coping: Again Motherly Am I doing the right thing etc.

So we have a mother with kids that likes to write. With a spiritual base she is developing relationships and raising her children in a technology based world, and when all else fails she changes the color of the throw pillows and bakes cupcakes! ha ha

There is obviously one or two that stand out as you have suggested. But collectively, a much stronger source of material. Really why limit yourself?

Spirituality and video games by itself at times can be a hard decision. What to let them play and why. Technology and Spirituality as a parent in general, can at times be difficult. - Stressful

Using technology as a bonding aid with your kids, bringing your family together.. your modern day game night. ( Yes I do this at my house.) We even have extended family over a couple nights month that play along.. its good times!

Cooking and Decorating with kids in the house can be difficult. I tend to do most of the cooking in the house because my wife cant handle the stress of cooking for a picky 5 year old. a dinner is when? 18 year old let alone the 2 of us that never know what we want to eat.

Decorating... if its not black leather in my house with the 5 year old... I would be buying new stuff all the time. I cant ban fruit juice, and I apparently cant ban it from the furniture either! ha ha

So then the blog.... "A Modern household built on Faith and Technology" And simply write about it all! THAT is a winner!

    Hope that Helps!

Well the thought of what I am passionate about does bring in some ???s I am NOT passionate about apps and games. I am passionate about my kids. I am passionate about Bible study and journaling and writing. But I'm really wanting to do a niche blog, not an accumulation , which to me is more of a lifestyle blog. I think a niche blog would be easier to monetize.

I have considered doing one on Anxiety because I have an anxiety disorder and I deal with that through my faith, journaling and writing. I could help others to do the same. . . thoughts on that idea?

Have you looked at monetizing possibilities for an Anxiety based blog? To be honest most of the ones I have read do not monetize at all, or when they do it is audio file type stuff. If you have something different in mind by all means go get it!

If you look back at your original list Cooking, decorating, and technology would be the most Monetizable, and Anxiety, I would suggest be the worst. The rest kind of fall in the middle. Even the APP idea is limited in the avenues of monetizing.

Here is the thing about "Blogging" sure you want a topic... but you can write about multiple things. That is what "Categories" are for. If you use word press you can introduce a free plug-in such as 'Custom Sidebars' from WPMU DEV that would allow you to monetize each "Category" or even down to each page through the use of side bar advertising.

Break out 5 categories to start with. write write write. Time will tell which ones you really want to focus on. From there you can make a choice to drill down and focus on one, or keep the broader monetizing scheme in place.

As much as this is about finding a problem and providing answers, it is also about making money. Look at say a Health food store. In really good ones you can buy organic fruits and veggies. You can buy weight loss products. you can buy Weight gain products. You can buy energy boosters. You can buy energy calmers. You can buy basic vitamin needs. You can buy complex multi vitamins. product after product after product. ALL under the heading "Health Food Store" Keep in mind in the brick and mortar world, this would be a 'Niche' store.

When you walk into a health food store you can quickly see what product sells more than others. Simply look at the amount of real estate a sub item takes in the store! Why cant a blog be the same thing? Better question... why aren't blogs more like this?

There are many tricks up an IM'ers sleeve that can make all this happen. Categorized blog, Segmented e-mail list, Separated product presentation.. and more.

So YOU want to make money online. You basically want to open a store. do you want just 1 product? or do you want literally hundreds if not thousands?

So you can start a targeted focused blog, but look at the responses on this thread alone.. talking about burn out and longevity. Or you can start something that has some diversity under the guise of a topic heading. You can change up your focus, as your audience does; quickly! Adapting to market trends is what IM'ers do. Or at least it is for those that take it seriously and have done it for along time.

Longevity is the key here. This is simply my strategy on the subject. By no means do I think this is the answer for everyone. It has just been the answer for me. I look for solutions that stretch REACH and can be cross branded.

      Hope that Helps!

As a lot of the other posters have mentioned, if you are NOT passionate about games and apps, it seems unlikely that you will be able to stick with that long-term enough to turn a profit.

That being said, you might be better off focusing on a blog dealing with anxiety although this may be much more difficult to monetize. There are, of course, an almost unlimited number of self-help type products on clickbank which deal with issues such as anxiety, etc. These could be promoted within the blog itself or through email marketing.

One idea would be to review several of the programs that one might find dealing with anxiety on clickbank and do a review type site / blog that could be a resource for those dealing with anxiety issues. The topic certainly seems limitless as thousands of people deal with anxiety issues. If you are truly passionate about it, then I think the best thing would be to just get started and focus on monetization later.

      Hope this helps.
