Website/Forum Tanking Fast

Hey everyone,

I suppose I should introduce myself. I'm Ops45 from MI. I am new here so please forgive my transgressions.

I've reached the point where I am seeking out help.

My site is 2 years old. It is mainly a forum but has a few html pages and a blog. I have 350 members registered, of which about 50 are active. The forum gets100-400 posts per day. Members are great about backing the forum financially and it is a very real community, however small.
The problem is, after all this time the traffic rate is just beyond poor. I was left with no choice but to move the site to a dedicated server last year, and the members have paid the bill in full every month. Though, in order to get this paid, I have to pretty much publicly beg for donations, which I despise. I plan to put the donation aspect to rest when I get back to work full time but for now I cant afford the $200 per month.
We have over 70,000 posts on the forum and a great deal of it is rich, original content.
My question is, after all this time and activity, why does it still seem like we just opened the door yesterday. We get almost zero unique visitors per day, but the forum is fully SEO optimized and looking at adsense, the forum has a great rating there, but we have a page rank of 1, and make about 5 cents a day, having ads in the header, footer and post bit.
What gives?

Something is not adding up here...

You say you are getting hundreds of REAL people to post every day, which leads me to believe it is an active, thriving community, yet at the same time you are also saying you get NO organic traffic and are making 5 cents a day with Adsense?

    Something seems to be off.

If you have a specific question about SEO, you can ask in the forum section that is dedicated to that:

Hey thanks for the reply and the link. To clarify, it is the active 50 members which create the 100 - 400 posts per day. The other members come and go once or twice a week/month and rarely post.

Also to follow up with a little more info: This forum was created by me, however it was the first few members who referred everyone else. I got lucky there. I will also point out that we have only 9 backlinks, which I suppose could be playing a big part in this, but they are darned hard to get! lol
