Starting off: Clickbank vs Ebay selling?

Hi, I'm new to the IM business, and having read through lots of posts by gurus and newbies alike, I've decided to start on this.

What inspired (or motivated) me to actually take a look at IM is how I saw a client of mine, a full 3 years younger, and making over $10,000 a month. He only said he sells ebooks and software on ebay.

So after reading this forum (I can't post anywhere else but here yet, I think), I've settled on two to choose from.

One, to sign up with Clickbank and get started with affiliates. Two, buy a guide which coaches on how to sell ebooks on Ebay.

Which should I go for?

The problem with ebay is that to sell ebooks you can only do so in cd/dvd form so it is harder to make a profit from.

If you want to affiliate via clickbank write lots of review articles online via the bum marketing method. Then open a twitter account and post the article links on there and you will get enough traffic without the need for ebay.

@NwS: Yeap, I found that out by Googling as well. however through some of my searches on ebay, the seller actually puts in a line that says something like "Additional $4.95 if you want this on CD/DVD". Lol, I have no idea how he gets away with that.

However, I've also read that ebay brought back ebook selling, the only thing being that you have to post on classifieds rather than on auctions. AND the book should only be purchasable on your own website, ie outside of ebay, otherwise it would get removed.

@dsmpublishing: Well, I've just signed up with Clickbank, and I'm working on a blog via wordpress at the moment. Is it better to get a domain and hosting? And how do I go about writing the reviews? Do I buy the product myself, sit down and then write?

Those sellers will not get away with it for long. Most of the sellers doing that are selling .40 cent ebooks and just doing it to gain feedback. Ebay is well aware of it, just from reading forums on ebay. These jackasses are the reason digital downloads were banned in the first place.

It is a very short term gain to break their rules. Notice the powersellers are not doing it, at least the ones I have seen. They have built something not worth risking, so I would not suggest trying it either. There will be a new policy soon, and who knows how it will effect honest sellers. Hopefully it will be something a long the lines of "no resell products allowed", that way only product creators can sell ebooks on cd.

@bigtex: Thanks for the insight, I guess I will settle for clickbank as a starting point then. Working on a Wordpress blog for my first foray into IM. Are there any things to take note? I've noticed that Wordpress actually offers an option to put your blog onto Google, and I've enabled that option. How effective is that actually?

Now I'm fully convinced, site building is the easy part, it's the traffic that seems hard, at least for now. Would using PPC be recommended? I previously worked for an IM company, and so am not new to PPC, just that I've never managed any campaign before.

make sure you have the proper bankroll to get started with ppc. When you get into the super competitive niches it can wipe you out pretty fast.

I could write a book on how to lose 12k in one month in ppc, however that 12k was better than any coaching program i could have done.

you may also want to look into cpa, check out the forum on here. I have better luck with those offers than any clickbank offers. I have run classified ads on ebay with some success promoting cpa's. Although it was not enough to live off of, it was enough to invest over 1k a month into ppc.

@anthony: Wow, thanks a lot for the links! It's actually really late where I am now, so I'll leave them for tomorrow.

    I've just completed my site.

@senve: I only created a Twitter account for my website yesterday, and I have 3 followers already. Not sure how though lol.

Bum marketing refers to article marketing if I'm not wrong.

What I'd like to know is what's considered a good keyword? I mean, right now I have a main keyword, and I'm spinning long tailed ones off it. If the main one generates 59,700,000 results on Google, would a long tailed version that generates 600,000 results be a good keyword to use?

I started with clickbank, but I may be moving on to eBay as time goes by. Really depends if you're better with online or offline marketing. eBay is easy to offline market with, while clickbank, vise versa.

EDIT: Also, forgot to mention I think eBays fee's are really high at the moment.

I think you learn different skills with each outlet. eBay requires efficiency, nimble marketing, attention to detail (and that was before they banned downloadable ebooks) Clickbank - once it's set up - probably means you have to spend more time developing the 'outward' skills - article marketing, helicoptering into forums etc.

The thing is, I LIKE eBay! I find Clickbank soulless!! So there you go!
