Number of Directory Listings Question

Greetings. While I know there are many elements involved in determining the relevancy and viability of utilizing a directory listing for your business, putting the other various points aside, I'd like to get your perspective on one question.

What is the minimum number of listings that a national business directory needs to contain in order for you to feel that it is a serious player in the market?

Thank you for your time. Cheers. - Frank

    Ridiculous question = no answers.

You may as well have asked "how long is a piece of string".

That's a ridiculous reply. I'm asking for your perception. All sentient beings posses perception.

Thanks for nothing. Cheers. - Frank

Hi. Thanks for your intelligent and thoughtful response, but I'm not looking for facts on other sites.

I guess I'll have to admit that possibly I phrased the question in a confusing manner. Let me make an attempt to clarify.

(A condensed version of our conversation).

I call you up and ask you if you would like to advertise in my "national" directory.

One of your questions to me is, "How many businesses are currently listed in your directory?" A valid question, correct?

I say, "1000." You probably hang up on me. No offense taken.

I say, "10,000." You probably decline to discuss it further. Not a problem.

I say, "100,000." You probably do the math and realize that it's an average of 2,000 per state. Not very impressive. Thanks, but no thanks.

I say, "1,000,000." You may start to pay attention to what else I have to say. Possibly. Maybe, not.

I say, "5,000,000." Do I have your undivided attention, yet? No? OK. At what number will I achieve that goal of you "liking" the number that you hear?

Do you see what I'm driving at? I'm not looking for facts. I'm looking for your psychological perception of what number gets you, personally, in your own mind to say, "That's a number for me to feel that this is a directory with a good number of listings." There is no follow up question. There is nothing beyond that, that I am attempting to ascertain.

      Nothing more and nothing less.

Thanks, again and I hope that you will see fit to indulge me with a number.

      Cheers. - Frank

    A national U.S. business directory?

I'd expect at least 100,000 entries.

Well, since no one wants to chime in, I'll just go with 6 million for starters. That's twice the number that I would want to hear, so I'm going to feel safe starting, there.

Additionally, the next time someone asks for help, I'll remember how much I received.

        Cheers. - Frank
