Yeah, a lot of photos cost 40 credits now. Also credits are more expensive. Dollar bin is gone. Really sad says me. Basically um Getty took over. It is now like a new company.

It's crazy, who on earth would pay that kind of money for an image. I wonder if they are trying to squeeze marketers out or something.

I found one on Morgue, it's not quite what I wanted, but it will do and it was free.

So what sites are we using nowadays for our graphics, I'm always a tad uneasy using free ones

Their prices are nuts... here's 3 good alternatives.

1. Stock Photos | Royalty Free Subscription Stock Photos | PhotoXpress - 10 free pics a day

2. http://www.qualitystockphotos.com - very nice selection and cheap, think it's $40 or so for a years unlimited, and they have video too.

3. Free Photos, Free Stock Images - Kozzi.com - related to qualitystockphotos, little more expensive, but very nice option too

I still use istock, there are alternatives but the time it takes to find the right image on those site is usually worth paying the extra fee from istock. But I agree the prices have gone up drastically since the getty merge.

If you want to see crazy prices take a look at the cost of images directly from gettyimages.com

I have the same problem. I don't like to pay high fees for images but if you stray from sites like istock, it is very time consuming to comb through all of the other sites to find the right image and the quality is usually not quite as good as with istock.

I will have to check out some of the alternate sites thedog mentioned, maybe yearly subscription is the way to go rather than paying for each image.

I've been in the same situation but trying to buy a news related image. Just don't bother unless you've a multinational publishing house. They wanted something like $50 to use a news story for 30 days on one page of a website for the UK only with a load of other clauses. Prices then went up to 4 figures.

Yes, their prices have gone up substantially.

I mostly use PhotoDune these days. They have a pretty good range and small images are still $1.

I shoot my own. Former photojournalist. All it takes is a little effort.

Most of the iStock stuff was very cheesy photos.

It was a scam in my opinion as well. The "credits expiring" issue was a huge waste of money.

Here's an alternative, reasonably priced, but the quality is so, so.

Ive used a few metaphors and symbol pics for free, with appropriate attribution, of course.

Yup, 1 tip you can try to find cheaper I'd grab the artist name and search google images and you can find on another stock photo site a lot cheaper. They are like cable companies being greedy for no reason.

Unless it's for some VERY specific then I can only highly recommend:

Stock Photos and Royalty Free Images from 123RF Stock Photography - $1 for the smallest size which is generally 400px in width and then $2 for the next size, and then $3 and so on. Really good subscription options too.

High Quality Royalty-Free Stock Photography From $1 - Stock Photo | PhotoDune - From the people behind Code Canyon and Theme Forest, it's $1 again for the smallest image so another great deal.

I only use iStock when they run specials. Look out for those as you can sometimes get what you want at a great price, but in the main I go for Photodune.net as others have said.

Another option is BigStockPhoto.com as they have some good content, prices are creeping up there more and more there though these days.

These guys are growing.. background Stock Images, Graphics, Illustrations, Vectors and More. (this link takes you to samples)

They offer 7 days free, then its $49 per month for as long as you wish to stay. Can use in web site designs and commercial products as long as you manipulate them into your product etc. Considering joining myself at the moment.

If you use a lot of images, a subscription is a cheaper way to go than licensing images individually.
