Engaging website visitors

Once you start getting traffic to a website, keeping visitors engaged and persuading them to keep coming back is a big challenge. I am thinking of running polls or competitions to see if that helps.

Anyone got experience/views on this approach? Any advice gratefully received by this newbie!

Just provide great content and be sure to add new content a few times per month. Competitions are good to help visitors back to your site, also try to capture their email address. A forum is also a good way to keep visitors engaged!

I managed to get my bounce rate to 1.75% this month which shows my visitors are engaging and that my content must good.

Unless you already have a huge amount of visitors, a forum would be a bad thing because it will be pretty empty -----> negative for site image.

The goal is to establish yourself as an expert. If people see you as someone who offers legitimate answers and solutions, they'll be more than happy to stick around. You don't necessarily need to use a bunch of "gimmicks". All you really need to do is make sure that people view you as a go-to authority that they can count on.

Put yourself in your visitors' shoes. What questions do you have? What concerns do you have? What would you have to see to make visiting this website a part of your routine?

Love this response. Once you're seen as an expert your audience will visit over and over.
The only other thing I like to include on the home page or 'about' section is simply to let visitors know that content updates regularly, so be sure to visit often. You don't have to be hypey about this, just state the facts. If they like your site the first time, and you mention that you keep adding to it, it gives them good incentive to return.

That is a good approach for running polls and competitions but there after again posting some engaging content also helps the the engagement of people coming onto your platform.

    Brendan,

Allow your visitors to subscribe to your newsletter if you have one and then in your follow ups, send them articles. But those articles should be written on a page where they actually have to click on a link in your email and visit that article page.

You can also allow them to post comments at the end of the article itself so that they can engage in a conversation and let you know what they thought about your article.
