Question about purchasing Domain Name

Hi all. Hope i am posting in the right section of forum.

I just wanted to ask quick question about purchasing the best domain name for my business and obviously for seo. The problem is that the domain name I want is taken but that the domain name isn't being used for a product name so I want to obviously pounce on that opportunity.

However.. what i wanted to buy was a good alternative. I am not going to reveal the real domain i am after but i want to know your opinion on which one of these domain name examples would be better and rank better going by their word pattern.

Goldman.net/org
TheGoldman.com

I'm obviously after the .com but as the .com is taken I only have two alternatives. Which personally would you go for? I have read that it can be bad having the word 'The' in a domain name so this is what makes me think i should go for the former. The .com is for sale but for $1500, potentially i could buy it in 4 years time.

    I would go with the first option
    Goldman.net/org

    I never like putting any sort of prefix before domain name such as "best" "the" etc

    There isn't big difference in ranking .com, .net and .org (obviously .com carries more weight but .net and .org are fine as well)

    Go for the .net/org. Like mentioned above, the prefix affects your domain name. It'll serve your purpose well for the product you are creating, and you may not even buy the .com eventually!

    Personally, I would go for .com and .net as they are more widely recognized and they rank much better in search engines as well.

      Thanks all of you for the swift replies.

      You have definitely confirmed what i was thinking.. to go the net/org route and scrap adding the 'the' just to get a .com

      I now have to think about which out of the net/org i want. But going by Jason's post and some stuff i read i think i will go for the .net

    If you want the .com domain, have you considered a suffix. For example like "online"...GoldmanOnline.com.

    Or maybe a hyphen ("-") between 2 words making up the domain name.

    Personally, I think the .net or .org should be OK.

      No, Hyphen in the middle of domain name is not recommended.
      People are not very good at remembering websites URL, specially when they are first time visitors to a site.
      Imagine next time they want to visit your site and forget to put hyphen in the middle, your visitors will end up on your competitors site.
      For the sake of not confusing your visitors, avoid hyphen in the domain name.

    I would go with the first option, with .net first and then .org. If you are trying to brand yourself, putting the "The" prefix is not as strong for branding.

      For branding you are generally better going for the shortest name you can get as it's easier for people to remember. For this reason the name without the "the" would be preferable. It's best to avoid hyphenated names as they can be confusing and difficult to remember.

      The extension doesn't matter except where your target audience is in a specific country. For example, if you only sell to people in the UK, then you would be better having the .co.uk extension rather than .com or anything else.

    dot com is always preferable but having "the" as the prefix doesn't work well.... is there another associated keyword you can add in after your main keyword perhaps enabling you to keep dot com... would not pay $1500 either lol
