How do I make instructions come to life?

The book that I'm working on comes in 5 sections (which I'll probably turn into 5 separate books). Actually there are a couple more sections, but it's the main 5 that I'm focusing on here.

The first of the 5 sections contains lots of exercises for the reader to do. It's for guitarists and all of the exercises involve playing scales.

The other 4 sections are exactly the same, and the only difference is that the exercises are slightly different. But the principle for the exercises is the same throughout the 5 sections.

Before each exercise there's a bit of introductory text to explain the reason for the exercise, and what it's all about etc. That bit I found easy.

But I'm having trouble with explaining the exercises themselves. It's not that I can't lay out the instructions. I've done that. That's the easy part. But it's so boring. It's like a list.

And when they go to the other 4 sections, it's just the same. Boring. And by then, they understand the exercises so there's not much more for me to say except to give the instructions again.

As for the intro to the book, the first couple of introductory lessons, and the conclusion, although they all still need work they're mostly done. It's just the exercises that I'm having problems with.

They all have diagrams and eventually I'll make videos of me doing them exercises. But it's the list of instructions itself that is boring. Especially when they're all repeated again in the other sections, and they already understand them, meaning that there's no need for me to explain them again.

How do you liven up something that? How do you make a list of instructions interesting?

Are you decent with video creation?

I've got plenty of experience making silly videos with a friend. Actually I've made 2 movies.

The only way I have of making videos is with my iphone 4. The camera is pretty good. I made a test video of me playing and it was fine except that it comes out narrow, like a vertical rectangle, but actually that's suitable because the videos of me doing the exercises will be just the neck of my guitar.

I would use some form of graphics and perhaps have the instructions for the exercises as a section in itself so that you wont have to repeat them in each of the other sections. This type of product really does need videos. Whether you create a hard copy of not you should include videos.

Yes it's going to have videos of me doing all of the exercises. And there are already diagrams as a guide for how to do the exercises. But the instructions themselves, right now they're just lists. It even bores me to look at them, so I imagine how the reader will feel.

I don't know, maybe the videos of me doing them could be enough. But then there would be very little for me to say. It would be a boring book with just videos and diagrams.

The exercises do have sections in themselves.

The exercises are different for each section. What's the same is the basic principle of them. It's like teaching conjugations for one verb in one chapter, then teaching them again for another verb in the next chapter. All the exercises are very important and I can't not include them all. They all have to be there.

Will you not include diagrams of the fingering and frets? That's what these types of books usually have. Whose the audience - adults or children (beginners) - if its children then silly cartoon characters would need to be there. If its for adults then I don't think they will mind it being 'boring' as long as they can learn the exercises.
If you know someone who would like to learn these exercises then why not let them have a copy of your proposed book and see what they say about it - just do the boring version and then you'll at least have created the book and have it ready for feedback. They might not think it was boring! :-)

The audience is guitarists who have been playing for some time and want to become more familiar with the fretboard so that they can play lead.

I don't think fingerings would be necessary as they would already know how to play the scales. Even if I did include fingerings, I could do that right at the beginning. Fret numbers, I could easily include that I guess.

Well I hope that people don't find the list if instructions boring. But it still leaves me with the problem of having 4 other entire sections where it's just list after list. The first section would be more interesting because at least I'm introducing the exercises and why they need to do them. But 4 more sections where it's just the same thing again, I think that would be too much.

I can't easily explain it, but it's absolutely necessary to have all exercises focused on. They are different, but basically boil down to the same principles.

I thought about having diagrams that literally illustrate step by step what to do. But then maybe that would also be boring (diagram after diagram after diagram).

I just wish there was something I could do to bring it all to life. The videos of me actually doing the exercises does go a long way, but I just don't want my readers to read list after list.

Also, since it's going to be a full info product (rather than just a normal book), I don't want customers to feel ripped off at paying a lot of money for a list of exercises. But that's really what my product boils down to. I need to bring it to life.

Maybe I could just not worry about it, and maybe, in those extra 4 sections, include other interesting and relevant things.

As noted, videos, photos, illustrations all help. These augment the steps, which are text.

Regardless of the blend you use, be sure to break each step into small portions ("Baby Steps") to get the best results.

Then do some testing. Give the it to people of various ages and skill levels and watch them work through the material. No coaching! That defeats the purpose. You just want to see if they can follow your instructions, and if not you can enhance them so they can.

Yes I'm going to have video demonstrations of me doing all the exercises, as well as diagrams of the fretboard showing what the exercises are based on. Plus the instructions themselves.

But my problem is that in terms of actually looking at it at a glance, all they'll see is a boring list of instructions, plus a diagram, plus a link / thumbnail of a video of me doing it. And then again and again and again for each exercise. And then the whole lot all over again for each section. It just seems a bit much.

I mean, wouldn't you be bored? Me personally, I would just get on with it even though it looks boring, as long as I know that the exercises will do me good, but I'm worried that some people will need something more. I don't know what though.

      Imagine this.....

      1) Play this scale
      2) Right, now play this other scale over here
      3) Now Play that scale
      4) Now play this one
      5) Now go back to the other one
      6) Then back to that other one
      7) And back to the first one again

      And repeat.

      [Diagram]

      .....again and again and again.

You are really talking about 2 things. One is the steps, and if people are motivated to learn, they will not be bored. You may be bored because you know the stuff, but new people won't feel like you.

The 2nd thing... maybe you should include some motivational materials if you think you need them. Great musicians, people you know, people who have used the materials and things like that. Success stories. You can never go wrong by encouraging your students.

Well right now I have no testimonials or past customers because I've never done anything like this before. But I suppose I could break up the monotony with other stuff (ie mnemonics to help them remember certain things, quotes from guitarists, pictures, videos of guitarists). It has crossed my mind. Also I will have videos of guided jam sessions (me playing lead based on the exercises, to background music, with space for the reader to play along with me). Maybe I could do audios of me explaining the exercises, with encouragement and tips. But I'm not comfortable with including my voice or appearing on video (unless it's just the fretboard and my hands). I'll think of something.

Use Pictures, instead of just diagrams, real life pictures of you holding the strings step by step.

At the end and throughout the instructions give additional tips as well as do's and dont's for each cord, etc... You can put the tips in a colored box to make it stand out as a tip. Also, with the instructions, never assume your customer will know what to do each time.

it sounds to me that you are not a creative writer and writing is not your strongest ability. i would recommend you to try and focus on your strong ability. is it video? is it graphics? is it a combination of humor and writing? figure it out and try it
