Response to person desperate for success

I responded to a new topic from a person who said they were going to "kill" themselves for lack of success, no lifestyle etc.

Looks like the original post from the person who posted it got zapped by a moderator - probably as well.

Here is my response anyway because it is crucial for anyone in that state:

Kassie - I fully understand your feelings, but honestly, with that frame of mind is totally destructive to the point where failure is inevitable.

The vast majority of marketers do not teach - or likely know - by far and away the most important factor to succeed in IM or anything at all in life - Mind.

All top sports people put their Mind first before physical practice. They all have mental coaches. In fact it is possible to get to the top in a sport using the Mind alone. Same for IM.

Wealthy people become more wealthy because they feel wealthy.

People in debt experience more debt because they expect to.

When an Internet Marketer starts to see those checks rolling in they start to feel wealthy and become more wealthy as a result, and the business goes from strength to strength.

That is the only reason why some Internet Marketers make fortunes at will, while most fail.

Actually I have often thought of doing a course related to the Mental principles of success etc, but figured that most people would just see it as voodoo and prefer to keep writing articles, throwing cash at PPC, writing blogs and so on and hoping for the best until they give up.

Thanks Alex. It has always intrigued me to know how many people recognise the importance of the Mind in success.

That said - the movie "The Secret" was watched by millions - maybe tens of millions by now, so there must be some interest.

Actually that movie, although it meant well, did not teach much of value, and was incorrect about many things. It inspired people though and that is the main thing.

But I absolutely guarantee that people who fail have sabotaged themselves.

When some of these top marketers do a product launch, they already know, beyond doubt they will make a fortune from it and always do.

Anyone can do the actual process, but most would not believe in the success and would fail.

I will consider the Mental Marketing product - just thought of that name as I typed so don't anyone steal it Just checked - already registered anyway.

But again - unless people understand how crucial this is, I would be wasting my time, and I never do anything without good reason - specifically to help people.

I would definitely recommend watching The Secret.

The underlying basis is that your reality, or "experience" is ultimately a function of the Mind - and this is 100% true.

But they talk about "The Law of Attraction" which does not exist - at least as presented by them. "Attraction" does not exist, so there can be no "law" that governs it.

I have written a lot about Quantum Physics - or more specifically Quantum Mechanics - as it relates to human experience - I am writing a paperback on the subject now actually - and I prove how it works at the Quantum Level.

Once people understand how the Universe works, after it has blown their Mind and they get over it, they know that they can experience anything they desire.

But again - on The Secret - it is inspirational, and all the things they claim can be achieved are true - but most people fail because they focus on The Law of Attraction which does not exist.

I am never ill for example - never catch a cold or flu - because I decide no to. Even health is a choice - IM success is no different.

Kassie - trust me I know what you are going through.

During the last 33 years I have been in business for myself, I have made, lost and made millions.

When I look back over that time, I realised that the only time I lost was due to these main factors: fear, doubt and lack of absolute knowing.

It was not easy for me I assure you.

After I left school I got a job, worked for about five years and thought - there is no way I am going to put up with this garbage for the next 50 years, so I sold everything I owned - mostly my old car, and started a computer software company on $400. Within 5 years I employed 77 people and doing $18M sales in a bricks and mortar business - only 11% of that was profit though - it was hard.

The Internet is an incredible medium for making big money without needing much to start with.

But again - if you enter it out of fear, desperation, greed or treat it like a casino you will absolutely fail 100% of the time.

I built up one company and another company that was due to list on the stock market offered to buy it for $5M. Something went wrong, the IPO did not go ahead and I lost the $5M - and that was after working for 17 hours per day, 7 days per week.

          What did I do?

I sat down, made a list of everything I learned, and then founded my next company, knowing I would never make the same mistakes again - and didn't.

These days IM is more of a hobby for me because I focus on helping people around the world in a really bad way, but cannot afford help. 75% of my time is given in this way, but it is my greatest joy.

The greatest part of receiving is to be able to give - this is one reason I am sharing here actually.

I have known this forum ever since Allen started it and followed with interest.

I do not speak for Allen, but I am willing to bet that he would verify everything I have said from his own experience.

          Kassie, Please read this story!

There is a bittersweet smile that comes over me when hear what you are saying... not for your hardship, but for the special qualities that you are going to have when you come out of that...and you will , because you are seeking answers and you will find them...you see I come from the same place...

I know it's hard to believe what these people are saying when you come from the wrong side of the tracks and everything around you feels oppressing. You see...

I grew up dirt poor in the projects, on welfare!

Somehow struggled my way to alot of success, and with the help of learning the law of attraction, and feeding my mind with other things... I saw miraculaous things when I grew up, but I had to feed my mind to break all that stuff. Trust me childhood was dismal, and looking at life through my parents eyes seemed hopeless.

Then somewhere along the way, after achieving all that success, I lost it again a few years ago, and ended back up in the same telemarketing booth I started from...

Working out of my sense of failure (only by intentionally utilizing LOA), I later rose up to become a manager of that telemarketing room...making just $500 a week. That was 3 years ago, now I am back to making 5k per month online sitting on my ass chatting in this forum...

          Let me tell you something:

2 1/2 years ago, my wife of 14 years and I split up, because she was shallow, and she loved me when I was on top... because I was "shallow " myself, when I picked her (but that's another story).

I left our upscale Townhouse (the one that as a child I never dreamed I would ever have), and all the things I'd worked for for 14 years..., and I took my 2 kids to some cheap skanky motel room with just our clothes and our pride thinking "we will only be here for a couple of weeks".

Having ruined my credit with the failing business, and having little money to live on...I had no idea the horror that was in store.

At this time I had just been promoted to manager at this telemarketing firm after sitting in a booth proving myself for 6 months. My pride was already broken from having fallen so hard to even be there at all at my age, and that management position didnt pay much, at least not for living in a weekly pay hotel and having two kids...

Barely making it from week to week me and those kids ate raman noodles, and canned food... I couldn't even afford to wash our clothes half the time... I cried secretly every other day as I wondered how I was going to get back up, and looking at them and seeing all that they had to sacrifice...or wonder where their next meal would come from...

Each week we barely made it by, begged borrowed and practically stole to make ends meet...some weeks I would have to beg the hotel manager to give me a break until I could get paid and make my hotel bill...I thought we were going to be kicked out several times... and they looked at us like dirt because I was late so much. The people in the other rooms laughed at us because we weren't used to it like they were and they thought my daughter was snobby, and they thought it was funny that I wore slacks and a dress shirt and carried a briefcase to work everyday...

At 38 years old I found myself back in a position that was very simliar to the oppressed childhood I had worked so hard to escape from.

I told my oldest daughter to be strong, and don't show any hardship in your countenance, the little one doesnt even know we are struggling, there's a swimming pool...he thinks we are on vacation... she was 17 at the time and had become pregnant at 14 which is how I got full custody of her... this picture of me if you look at my profile is me and my grandson, back when we lived in that roach infested motel... I put it there on purpose because it reminds me of what determination can do. We were happy that day because we had a little bit of extra money and had gotten to take our clothes to the laundromat, and go get our haircut together...

My face was red because it was the first day in awhile that I had been able to afford my self a red-eye at starbucks... I had spent that day thinking how humiliated I would be if my ex could see how hard I'd fallen... whenever I would feel that way I would try to get (if there was an extra $2.00) a starbucks to remind myself that I stilled deserved the best...and that I would one day be back on top!

Anyway, my daughter had alot of faith because she had seen her Dad be very successful before and we somehow knew we would come out of it, but it was very hard to stay in that frame of mind!

          Moving on:

Every week I would spend the desperately needed 35 or 40 bucks to put in applications for apartments... each week I got turned down. Once again, back when I bought my house things were different with my credit...I was not prepared for this nightmare at all, and totally ignorant that it would be this hard when I left... sometimes I would even have to borrow pampers from the next door neighbors.

It became more and more discouraging as the weeks rolled by. To make it worse, the people in the room next to us had been there in that hotel for two years because their credit was also bad and they couldn't get an application approved to get a house... Please keep reading.

Even with all of that going on... I had a new management position to think about.

Each day I would get up and iron my cleanest dirty slacks and silk shirt...(once again, couldn't afford dry cleaning, or even a laundromat half the time... and I would get up and cry to myself and say "how am I going to face 100 telemarketers with a straight face and inspire them to succeed when I feel this way... but somehow, I would gather up what was left of my pride and go face them with a smile and give them motivational speeches...and everynight me and my daughter would look at apartments on the internet and talk about how it was gonna be when we got to the other side... I would every week buy my grandson about 10.00 worth of toys from the 1.00 store because we had left all his toys behind...it was HARD!!!

Somewhere along the line my car got repo'd which made it even worse I would have to bum a ride on the way home from work and ask someone to stop at the grocery store for me... all of this knowing that my wife was sitting in our cushy topwnhouse with another man, while we were going through all of this.

After being turned down so many times by apartment complexes, I had become convinced that "even if I get approved it's going to be by one of these cock raoch infested places in the slums...man what a fall from grace!

Still, I had taught my daughter good spiritual principles regarding LOA..., when we would look at apartments on the internet at night when I got hoime, we would always look at the very finest ones...we did it intentionally, even though we knew the probablility was slim...

To make a long story short, my telemarketing room started breaking records, and I got a raise, started making bonuses, and my faith started building... we started having a little extra money maybe 200 bucks left at the end of the week, clean clothes,... but still there was the credit prob and we were still stuck in that nasty hotel.

Well, my daughter would often laugh at me because when I was supposed to be looking at apartments I would often get distracted by looking at SUV's instead... one day, knowing my credit was bad, I took a chance bummed a ride from one of my telemarketers and had them drop me off at a car dealership on blind faith and told the manager my story and how I was a "manager"... so he said he would try his best to get me financed by a regular bank but there was little hope. I sat there for 6 hours as bank after bank turned him down. We tried about 8-10 different baks...I didnt have a ride home so what did I have to lose? I was determined to drive away in a new Lincoln LS!

Well finally a bank said yes, and he said "I cant get you approved for XXX but you can qualify for XXX, there wasn't anything on the lot that fit that price range except for a (go figure) 2006 red dodge durango suv with only 48,000 miles on it!!

I arrived at the lot "Broke", and I drove back to the hotel that day in a practically new truck that I had paid ZERO down for, with bad credit, on a regular bank loan, and didnt have to make any payments for two months!

My daughter laughed and said "It's because you were looking at SUV's instead of apartments...

Next: My faith had begun to increase.

One of my telemarketers had a rich girlfriend and he lived in one of the nicest apartment buildings in Nashville... I got an idea one day knowing how money motivated he was...I offered him 100 bucks to go talk till he was blue in the face and "sell" me to the apartment manager... told him "if I get approved I'll give you another 100...

To make a long story short two weeks later I had got a call and not only was approved for an apartment there, but it was the nicest apartment in the WHOLE complex, and somehow I had managed to create so much success with that room that I could actually afford it!!

The proudest moment of my life was when I unlocked the door to that apartment for the first time and me and my kids had our first dinner on the floor (no furniture) in our new apartment that actually had clean carpet...they were smiling and happy and me and my daughter were so proud!!

I felt like I had just escaped from hell by the skin of my teeth, and walked into heaven!

Not only did we get our apartment but it was a SWEEET one, actually nicer than the townhouse!

We had just come out of 4 1/2 months pure slums, and under the most horrid circumstances. Some of our experiences I dont have time to describe here, but trust me it was a HARD discouraging climb!

That was a little over 2 years ago. Today, I make great money without even having a job, and everything is awesome, although I still have higher aspirations!

My other highest moment was a few months back when my ex said one of her kids was in legal trouble and she desperately needed $1,000 to help them. I gave her $1,200 cash and told her to keep the change, no payback necessary!!! Just to show how far I had come...some will say that's stupid to do, but I have been waiting for that day a long time. It was a victory!

          HERE'S THE POINT KASSIE:

Don't frickin tell me you cant do it PUSH! PUSH! PUSH! Keep your faith, keep looking at luxurious things even though your circumstances look impossible!

Keep putting one foot in front of the other and just trust that God will provide the ground beneath your feet, and that your faith will meet you at the cross roads!

In a few months you will be telling a story even greater than the one I'm telling you now!

Now you know what my sig means!

Ps. My borthers and sisters all managed to be successful, but my mom is still dirt poor and we all pay her bills...

How did we break out? By "feeding our minds"! The same way you are going to here.

Let these people break you until you cry, then get up and let them feed you the principles that will guide you to success. You only "think" you are gonna die. I know it's hard, but you stay here and listen no matter how things look or "continue to look" for awhile!

YES! YES! YES! It is absolutely your mind! You can absolutely change your life by changing your mind and deciding to believe that your circumstances are telling the WRONG story about who you are!!!

You have got to believe this! Cry and scream, and when you are done , wipe your eyes and get back to reading success stories, and looking at nice cars and apartments, and ABSOLUTELY ignore everything else around you!

Once again it would take a whole book for me to describe to you what I was up against, both in that situation, and also in my childhood.

I know you weren't born with a silver spoon SO THE F*@K WHAT?

Trust me, you will have a story to tell when you reach the other side, then maybe you can go back and inspire your family!

Hope this helps! It's worth it to see another kid like me beat the odds!!

I have known many people who have written to me after being in a situation that seemed so utterly and completely hopeless - no home, no money, no friends etc - who simply let go of their feelings. Instantly everything changed, because having let go of all the negatives, the positives, which are far more powerful can come to the rescue.

There are many Internet Marketers out there - some of which I know - who were in a really bad way before moving in to IM and making millions.

Another thing - never, ever give up.

Edit: I apologise for the lack of structure in my post...

I started to make money after I left this forum... This is not an advice to leave this forum, by no means. But if you got no experience you read the information differently.

I started working at an internet marketing company and learned a lot from the customers they had. They were all successful. Some in retail, some in travel, some in headhunting, some in finance. All colors of the rainbow.

You do not make money from learning how to use Google Adwords, how to learn the next trick that made some $5000, how to set up a community. AND THAT IS THE KEY.

You can make money from having a good idea for a site/product. Something that the market wants (learn at least some marketing).
    1) If you have that idea, learn how to find out if it can actually make you money (how to test it) or just start it and see what happens (optional, but more risky).
    2) What do you need to make that goal?
    3) Learn the skills, buy the things you need to buy.
    4) apply it and make money.

For example, for an affiliate site. I found out a specific region was famous in my country. I wanted to make a site with information about the region and all hotels that there were and car rentals and sight seeing stuff etc. Valuable site that give people the information they want. And the business model? There are tons of affiliate links for the travel industry. If they click your link and book an hotel, you get a commission.

Alright, so that's step 1, the idea.

Step 2) I needed to learn how to make the site or buy a design + cms. Also think about how you want to present it.

Step 3) I had the idea, I had the site, but I had to promote it. Actually, I did this step before doing step 2. As I'm good with SEO, I knew there were many opportunities and I based the structure of the site on it. If you don't know how to drive traffic to your site, then learn how to do it. There are enough options!
    - SEA
    - SEO
    - social media
    - e-mail marketing (after buying a list)
    - JV
    - article marketing
    - etc.

Every strategy has it advantages and disadvantages. I say, focus on one or two and really learn it in depth. Do not switch to another option! Why? Because every method works, if you really know how to apply it. If you switch, you usually put them in effort in it up to the point you switch and you walk off to another strategy without getting any results.

Everyone who says "I tried all WSO's, but nothing work.... I tried adwords but it's too expensive....I tried social media but it's crap" and yadiyadiyadi are people who quit too early and didn't really learn how to apply it well.

For me, I do SEM (SEA+SEO) only.

So, I got the idea (1) (and knew people were interested in it), I made the site (2), I drove traffic to it (3) and made money... Yay!

Another example in retail for example, you need to learn different things (maybe you know some already). The idea is the start again; Oh, I see an opportunity to sell productrange X on the internet, how do I start selling them and make money?
You have to learn the skills that are involved in the process:
    - How to set up a webshop or buy one.
    - How to find a good market and products.
    - How to deal with buying your products to sell.
    - How to ship stuff, how to do your administration.
    - How to drive traffic to your site.
    - How to create USP's when starting your site
    - etc...

The reason why I started making money when quit this forum, is simple. When I was on WF in the beginning I tried WSO after WSO. Idea after idea, but I didn't really go in depth with any specific idea.

Second of all, some WSO are great at driving quality traffic, but... That's useless with a crappy website or crappy proposition. The idea you have has to be good.

So the list in short is easy:
    1) Start with an idea
    2) What do you need to know to make it happen?
    3) learn those.
    4) apply those.

Actually most aspiring marketers waste far too much time looking for "products", reading forums etc and get so confused they often never even get started. If they do get started and make nothing after a few days they try something else.

This forum is valuable of course, but in the right context.

IM is not rocket science - in fact it is really simple - other people make it hard to sell products giving the impression that you need such products and convoluted strategies to succeed.

Many marketing friends of mine a few years back were putting up Adsense sites by the thousand. I never bothered - I could see it collapsing like a pack of cards and all the time, money and effort wasted. Well actually most of them did make hundreds of thousands or even millions while it lasted, but now their sites are just nuclear fallout.

If I build a new Internet business, I want to know it will keep on growing, and still be here in 10,20 50 years time and above all has real capital value if I decide to sell it.

By far and away the biggest waste of time, money and effort expended over the years has been the effort to trick Google - i.e. to get high rankings.

It is just staggering to see all the latest strategies and products come and go over the years, when the only people to have made any money are the people selling the products.

It's like the gold rush - most prospectors made nothing - or lost everything - while those selling the picks, shovels and pans made fortunes.

The funny thing is that the marketing principles that work today are the same ones that have worked for the last 200 years - only the media has changed - i.e. the Internet.

Basically - if you get your Mind right - absolutely crucial - and then apply tried and tested marketing principles, it is virtually impossible to fail.

It is just staggering to see all the latest strategies and products come and go over the years, when the only people to have made any money are the people selling the products.
This is definitely a sore point of frustration for me personally... to see people starting out and just thoroughly convincing themselves that they CAN "trick Google" and that that is the way to succeed. As opposed to taking the time to actually learn the profession and make headway into building real, valuable assets that will last. And one can explain it till the cows come home, and some will get it, but others will try to go for the tricks anyway and the only way they learn is when they get their sites vanished or traffic stops coming in.

Anyway, this is a stellar thread, lots of awesome insight, nice work!

      You need these at least:

      1. The right Mindset - don't start without it.
      2. To learn marketing fundamentals - can be adapted with experience
      3. Human psychology - another fundamental
      4. Testing and tracking
      5. Ongoing research and development

There are more factors of course, but after that it is just determination to succeed and never, ever, ever give up - ever.

IM is a business which succeeds or fails like any other business. But the Internet has made it possible to start a business without any of the usual business disciplines, without which failure is inevitable.

I have often thought about teaching these things, but that would make me just another product vendor, and that is not what I want to be.

LOL! I partnered with a self-professed real estate marketing firm just awhile back. (The owners actually bought it from a brilliant marketer). My first question to them was "Who is YOUR target audience?"

They could not answer with anything other than, "Everyone".

Can you imagine a company that markets for thousands of clients not knowing who their target audience is?

The point is, they actually came to me to "save them" never asking themselves, "What can we learn to save ourselves? What was our mistakes? How can we change that?"

You are right Rick. But you can't succeed with 2 -5 without starting with 1.

All those successful marketers who have never thought about Mindset are still successful because they have it anyway - in other words their Mind is configured for success.

I didn't disagree that 1 was important. I just read your list as:
    1. The right mindset.
    2. Marketing.

Well if you want my opinion, unpopular though it might be:

    1. Forget SEO
    2. Forget Social Media
    3. Forget article marketing

And all derivatives and variations on the above. These are all transient strategies.

Best way of quickly driving traffic to your site? PPC

After that I suggest going the route of making - or having made - your own very high quality products that people will not only purchase, they will want to refer, and affiliates will want to promote them.

In the meantime keep building that list - that is so important.

Most of my sales come from referrals, affiliates, viral products and above all my extremely loyal and large list that I started building in 2004.

It is crucial not to approach this "to make money". Put yourself on the other end of the transaction as a customer. What do you expect?

A high quality product, great support, and a merchant that really, really cares.

So what makes you so different in thinking people will make exceptions?

Over the years I have learned one fact above all others - customers are everything - so do whatever you need to do to keep them happy, and then they will remain loyal and buy everything you offer because they trust you.

Never use "tricks" or "magic bullets" or "products" designed to deceive either search engines or people - you will fail and lose money at the same time.

The sooner people who wish to succeed learn and understand this the better.

I have been in business for 33 years now, and I am sharing with you some of what I have learned, all of which applies to IM.

    Best business model?

Membership sites - by far - and they have a future.

You seem to contadict yourself... the Law of Attraction DOES exist because it's simply another way of saying "all about the mind", and the mind only, which is what you say in your second sentence! Check out The Master Key by Charles F Haanel is a first class study, but some will find they just have to "go with it" and read ot with an open mind, before they understand what it's saying ; )

How can I feel wealthy when all my clothes are from 2 years ago, when I have no car because it borke down and the cost to fix it was more than the value of the car, when i have to eat top ramen and chunk light tuna in vegtable oil because its $1 a can, when i had to live out of my car for 2 months because I couldnt pay rent, when last month I had to sell every expensive thing I had just to barley pay the rent, when I had to call my phone company and ask for an extension yesterday?? Yeah I'm so wealthy, I'm feeling it..let me tell you. And please don't say there are people in p[arts of the world who don't have clothes or never had a car...I dont care...they are not me and have not gone through what I've gone through since birth so their stories do not compare to me and my journey from being poor to feeling wealthy. The lack of money is the reason for all my harships, my parents harships and their parents hardships. If I do succeed Ill be the first person in my entire family to ever be rich. My grandpa tried so hard all his life and I have to watch my dad every year talk like he is going to make it then listen to him cry when it fials all over again. I have watched the secert a million times but its kind of hard not to feel pain when your being slapped accross the face repeatedly!!
There are people from worse situations than yourself who've mastered the art of using their mind. You obviously have some wherewithall because you understand the internet, and have at least some mental/physical/financial/online access faculties to be using/posting on this forum in the first place...? So at least give yourself that much credit!!

Ultimately money and success are seen with your mind, not your eyes

        No contradictions.

I have all 5 of Haanels books - and sell them as a package - and about another 30 "Law of Attraction" books and sell them as a package as as well - all updated and edited by myself. Most of the books no one will have heard of before.

I only know of three books that truly understand how we create our experience - Hannel is not one of them. The three that understand are virtually unknown to most.

Most of these books actually seem to tell the same story in different ways - The Secret follows the same theme, which is why most have it wrong.

That said the actual teachings can and do work, but not for the reasons stated in those books - or in The Secret.

The Law of Attraction may be related to using the Mind, but that doesn't mean, as you imply, that the Law of Attraction is another phrase for applying the power of the Mind - it isn't - not by a long shot.

People who succeed using Law of Attraction teachings always do so because they have invoked other "forces" that they were not aware of.

Same applies to these "miracle healing's" at Lourdes and so on. The person healed thinks it was the water, or Mary or whatever they believe in, when in fact it was their own Mind that brought about the healing.

kadensnga: Thank you for an exceptional and very inspiring post.

I will not dilute it by commenting, but suffice it to say there are many lessons to be learned within it.

I would just say we are all here on Earth for one reason only - to learn by Experience.

It makes your life a whole lot easier once you accept the fact that negative experience is every bit as valuable as positive experience, and should be welcomed as such.

Actually "positive" and "negative" are human concepts - there is only Experience.

There are many extremely successful IM'ers out there that came from behind.

Steven Pierce left school at 14, always in trouble, living on the streets, involved with drug gangs, shot, and then went on to become a truly great marketer and person - one of the best in IM and a person who deeply cares about people.

Joe Vitale was out on the streets not so many years ago.

John Assaraf, a truly awesome person and great self improvement expert was involved in street gangs when he was younger, and, as he said himself, was either heading for jail or the morgue.

Neal Donald Walsch - author of the Conversations with God books was right at the lowest of low before pulling himself back to achieve great things.

I could give you many many more examples.

      But the point is this:

It is not the good times, the highs that make us who we are - it is the lows and how we deal with them - that is where our true Self comes from.

I have had several real lows myself - situations that people cannot imagine - but without those lows I would not be the person I am today, able to help countless people around the world in dire situations.

If you are in what you think is a really bad situation then be happy - you have the opportunity to become someone great and to find true joy and freedom.

As I said before - there is no "good" or "bad" - only experience.
