Your views on PASSION...

I hear people say it all the time..... "Pick a niche that you're PASSIONATE about and create a BLOG to write and post to.......

My view is.....

Don't pick what you're passionate about... pick a topic in which you can SELL PRODUCTS.

I get the passion thing, really I do. I'll even go so far to say that if youre passionate about something, chances are there's a sizeable group of others out there who are, too.

If you can find them and find a medium with which to reach them, then your passion, from a business stand point, might work.

But... your PASSION, when creating in information marketing business, is NOT your ace.

Your ACE is SALEABILITY.

'Cause if nobody's there to BUY... you won't have a BUSINESS and, after all, having a business is why we are all here right?

Back in the day, MY coach told me (in this order).....

"Find a market > Find a PROBLEM > Find an advertising conduit > then develope the funnel and products.

He didn't talk much of topics of passion but he said A LOT of finding topics that SELL and this ideology has served me well.

    I agree with you Ben,

For me rule number one is find an already profitable niche. The product is one of the last pieces of the puzzle. Having a passion is fine if that passion is in an already profitable niche but creating a market that doesn't already exist takes a lot of time and money. Blogging is also very time consuming and ultimately is one of many ways of driving traffic to an opt-in page. It's not something I would do

I agree with this point of view, but you have to like something in what you are doing, even if it is not your passion.

  • I have been able to pick what I'm passionate about, and build a successful company that sells products in the same niches as my passions for well over a decade.

There really never was an either / or choice for me that I thought I had to make.

Many folks seem to think however that there has to be some sort of a choice to be made between the two. (Follow your passion and be poor, or make lots of money selling whatever is the hot trend).

The fact is that if you can learn how to reach your target audience customer that is passionate about the same things you are creating and selling in your passion niche, then you will be successful for the long term.

It's all in the marketing, not in what you choose to sell.

I think you're slighty talking about different business models.
One model is to go into a niche, either one niche, ir multiple niches, set up maybe automated income streams and move on to the next - no need for passion there at all, no need to know anything about the product.

The model based on passion would involve building an authority site, something you'd have no problem creating ongoing engaging content, building deep relationships etc.
Obviously it would need to be a viable niche.

S, not easy to compare the models as the same.

If you are outsourcing everything then it doesn't matter if you're passionate about the niche yourself. You just have to find people who are and who are willing to do the work for you for a share of the profits... because if you are just hiring people who have no interest in the topic themselves then it will show in the content and products you're creating.

Personally, I have been in many niches already that I am absolutely not interested in myself and still was able to generate a nice chunk of profits

Passion is something is which is banded around but what is true passion anyway? Is it an interest or a hardcore obsession?

I'm in the video games world doing something really cool and disruptive but I work so hard I haven't really played games for 18 months or more. Is it right to say my passion is gaming? If so, then I'm really not living my passion. I definitely would not say my passion is hard work... I want to work hard to live the life I want, not simply to keep working harder and harder.

We have however had some successes. Virgin Gaming promote us on their homepage and the British Guardian news paper mentioned us on their website yesterday:

    Article in the Guardian

So we found success and are getting more success, but am I really doing what I am passionate about? I'm not sure. It's hard work growing a business from scratch but I'm building my dream of a business that sustains the lifestyle I want (my team grew by 7 people last month which is really fun, but the times last year when I couldn't afford the petrol to run my car were certainly not fun). A business that puts me amongst some of the best in the world - perhaps that is my passion, the passion for my vision.

Interesting question though and interested to hear if more people have success in their passion or in other fields.

I agree with ben find a niche that make you earn some cash but you need to have much info about your niche if you don't have info about your niche then your niche is nill and useless for you

passion heavily influences your ability to sell. I bet you couldn't sell a underwater basket weaving course very well because of your complete lack of knowledge on the subject. I agree that you could learn it, but how much easier, faster, and better could you learn a topic in an industry with pools of money, that you still have at least some degree of passion about?

As you said XponentSYS this topic has been talked about a lot and it will split people every time.

I think it is a personal choice, if you are looking to enter a niche to sell products and make money then information is easy enough to come by these days to provide enough content to support your niche. But on the other hand to build a business around something that you are passionate about and love to do, has got to be more fulfilling working life.

Either way there is always money to be made.

Here are my views on passion:

It doesn't have to be one thing or the other. Having been involved in over 50 different niches I can tell you that passion came in two forms:

    a. Topics that I was passionate about (such as giving dating advice)

    b. Passionate about the business I built in that niche and a passion I had for my customers.

If what you're passionate DOES sell, then you have a win-win. If what you're passionate doesn't sell, then some business people are motivated on building a business that provides value and they become passionate about their customers, regardless of the business.

Everyone is different and opinions are going to vary widely.

Here's another thing to think about: one of my most profitable niches (dating) didn't start out so well. In fact, I wasn't passionate about it at all, I was more focused on building a business that provided value.

    But guess what happened?

As I interacted with more and more of my customers and actually SAW the impact my products and services were having on people's lives I became rabidly passionate about the topic and found myself immersing myself in the PUA / dating coach lifestyle (as one example).

Passion comes in all forms and sizes and sometimes, just sometimes, it comes later.

Honestly, it's easier for a person to make money in a business that they are best suited for. If they can't do this, then they should enter onto another course of business. There's money to be made in every avenue of business, so a person doesn't have to do anything they don't want to do in order to make money for the longterm if they don't want to.

Passion is a big thing for me...

I think the passion spill is designed for newbies who are actively looking for something to talk about or a niche in the MMO niche or Internet Marketing Niche.

I think you should talk about something you either know or you want to know about.

I think that you can monetize any niche if you target the right people and build a following. To me the important thing is knowing a topic well enough to be perceived an expert.

It doesn't always have to be MMO or IM niche. Some people are ok making just a few hundred a month they don't always want the big money (us) Internet Marketers seek.

Passion is something you put your heart and soul into and don't even think twice about doing.

Passion is something you just do and you give it your best each and everyday.

Passion is something you can do for free and not care about making any money.

Passion is putting your own unique twist and making it original to you.

If you are passionate about something work doesn't seem like work, it's just something you love to do.

Yes but if you are Passionate about something and you love to do it and doesn't seem like work, then inevitably what happens is that Money is going to be an eventual part of the equation. Right ?
At least I think most of us are here to make money !

And this is where your Passion ceases to be as strong because your outlook becomes clouded by money.

I think sometimes keeping the two separate can be prudent or else you run the risk of diluting what true Passion God has bestowed upon you.

I am passionate about business in general, the thrill of starting a company from scratch is like no other!

But your coach sounds like they really knew what they were talking about - no point in creating a product that you absolutely love and care about if there is no market for it.
