** URGENT ** Beware Of People Trying To Register You To This Forum

I just had the scariest thing happen.

I just received a validation to become a member of this forum.

It was my name, but spelled a little differently. It also was sent to an email
address of mine that I never use.

My guess is, somebody found the email address, decided to try to sign up
under it, thinking that they could possibly redirect the email to their
email program (I'm guessing here) and then sign in under my name (though
not exactly the one I am using here but close enough) and cause who knows
what kind of trouble.

If you receive and email asking to verify your forum registration, make sure.

1. You actually did do this.
2. It is for the email address that you used.

I am going to forward the email to the help desk. I doubt that they will be
able to trace who did this, but it's worth a shot anyway.

Please...be careful.

Thanks Steven. I've already had 3 people (spammers/scammers) PM me with offers since I joined this site only a few weeks ago. When I go in to check the PM's, I see the user is banned. So that's their game. I just wonder... how does admin catch them so fast? If the message is in PM, how do they see it? There are thousands of members here so I can't imagine that one of the dummy admin accounts will PM'd each time.

Just so you know, I heard from the help desk and I wasn't the only one that
      this happened to.

The accounts have been deleted so thank goodness they're on top of this.

A testament to how well this forum is run and kept clean.

      Thanks Allen and Admins.

A few of us have had this, it is from someone who banned in the past. Not only that but they have tried to get into our accounts by trying to reset our passwords.

I keep getting emails to confirm my account. The giveaway, apart from not having set up the account, is that he spelt my name incorrectly.

For those who wonder who it is, think of the person who registered an account and pretended to be Big Mike, the same person who had avatars that were offensive.

  • Had the same thing - I thought it was someone else, until I received a threatening message through one of the forms on my website. Then I quickly figured out whom it was.

Thanks for letting me know I wasn't alone! I confirmed it and changed the password, and sent in a support ticket of my own.

Interesting, you say that you never use the email they used to signup, if so how did they get it? If they have actually gone ahead and scanned the email server then I would say this is a deliberate attack on you.

I would maybe even suggest that this person knows you personally.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Funny you should say that, Steven. In the past couple of days I have gotten 3 confirmations for forums that I didn't register for, and it has really been freaking me out. I'm not sure what's going on, but of course it's making me worry.

What do these people get from doing all these annoying things? Don't they have anything better to do than troll in this forum?
