New Domain Extensions

Hi everyone,

I have noticed a lot of new domain extensions are becoming available such as .cars .online .blog .news .web .site .buy and a heap more.

They all have different prices too.

What are your thoughts on these new domain extensions?
Do you think the .com .org .net .info will beome less popular with all these new ones available?

It must be an exciting time to be a domain flipper.
You guys that are into domain flipping and website flipping, what are your thoughts on all these new domain extensions?

Shaneman

I like domain extension variety. It helps in identifying sites' content
to a more accurate degree. Nobody is going to mistake an .xxx and
    what it contains, for example.
    How much for highperformancesports.cars?

In terms of marketing to a layman sort of person, with little knowledge of TLDs, the .com will always remain supreme.

I've never seen any of these new TLD domains ranking anywhere. I don't think any major sites or businesses are moving away from .com/net/org any time soon. From a user standpoint it makes sense; it just seems like an extra unit of information to remember as part of the domain name.

I certainly hope so. These new extensions are garbage designed to make icann and the registrars rich. I hope everyone flocks to them so there are more .com, .net, and .orgs for me to register.

These are untested and have no advantage in the search engines and will be difficult for non-IMers to remember or even know that they exist.

Personally, I believe they are a waste of money.
There's all kinds of .com domains available.
They're just in front of your own eyes...

Shaneman..Besides the obvious that the big 3 are so well known and accepted by the public, The prices of the new extensions are way to expensive. look at the renewal fees. I just don't see domain investing in such an expensive, non-proven field taking off.
I don't if highperformancesports.cars is available when the extension goes to general availability.

If you are doing SEO, then forget about all these extensions domains.
Only pick .com, .net and .org
I have never seen any of these extensions ranking in Google, once we see them ranking in Google, only then one should consider buying them.

There are some interesting comments here that you guys have shared.

In summary, because these new domains have yet to rank well in the search engines, are more expensive, plus the fact that .com .info .net and .org are so well known - for now it is best to stay with the .com .info .net and .org extensions.

It will be interesting to see over time if any of these new domain extensions become more popular than others and start ranking well in search engines.

We will have to wait and see

Domains don't rank in search engines. Content ranks in search engines. The EMD advantage that domains used to have has long been gone.

Good point. Domain extensions do not rank in the search engines. Yes it is the content with the related keywords that rank in the search engines.

That is why it is always good to find keywords that have high searches and low competition. We then use these keywords to name our content that ranks in the search engines and these keywords can also be used in a domain name.

The new domain exts will give more choices and variety when choosing a name for your website.. You will be able to recognize what industry a business is in just by looking at the ext. I think it's a good thing and they will become very popular.

The new domain names are as valuable for SEO as any other domain name.

There is technically no difference between a dot com, a dot net, a dot info or a dot garbage.

There are differences based on individual sites. If you get a link or even better a long article related to your site and keywords with a link and that site has a lot of authorithy, it does not matter whether that site is dot whatever or not.

Now, these new domains have a value aside from possibly making the companies that issue and maintain them rich:

These new domains can help with branding a product or service and they can act like a vanity phone number.

If that extension to gether with the name communicates what is "in the box" so to speak there is a definite value.

That means people and companies that have a product or service that can profit from such a name will be happy to buy such a name. They would then either build a site around it or direct the traffic to their already existing site.

Branding for those new extensions is particularly interesting if the company that uses the domain is advertising the domain (web site) on TV. Similar to those TV ads that have vanity 800 numbers.

So, if you have a business that could profit from such a new extension make sure you keep yourself up to date on the release and registration dates and grab "your" domain ASAP.

And if you do not happen to need such a name for yourself you can identify such domains and then register them and offer those names to companies that did not have the time or manpower to locate those names.

If you decide to register such domain names and sell them later, there is risk involved. Make sure that you do your homework first and not just register a bunch of names just because they "looked so nice".

If one name costs $39 and you sell one name out of every 10 you register, you would break even if you sell the name for $390. So make sure that you mark up the name enough to make it worth your while and still make it affordable for the company that eventually buys the name.

What about automatic link creation? For example; if I type http://boston.plumber (.plumber is an available extension) skype has no idea it's even a link.

I see that this forum did pick it up as a link as well as www.boston.plumber. It's probably not a problem in anywhere other than skype but people might not even get that it's a url and stumble around adding a .com to the end.

It's exciting to see such brandable domains though. I just spent a short while adding city names into Namecheap and in every one there's a huge niche service available (clothing, plumber, tattoo, land, singles...etc) in the new TLDs. e.g. www.newyork.tattoo, www.newyork.singles and www.newyork.land are all currently available. I may not be immediately seeing the opportunity but I feel there's one here somewhere.

    The problems I have with them are;

    1) Will people recognise them (when seeing in print for example) without thinking the .com is missing?

    2) Will all markup platforms recognise them as links?

I will stick to .com's as I always have, the only thing I go for other is .net or .org and that is usually throw away sites for a trending subject that won't last.

I think it will always be .com on top.

No doubt but are these new TLDs totally worthless? I think; probably not.

No and in no way are they, they are good especially for flipping but with all the services and the bots out there it is very hard to get the good ones as they are snatched up really fast.

I mean if I was in the business of domain flipping I would go for them but that is probably the only reason for me.

Now if you have a brick and mortar business and to give you and example. Lets say they opened a new healthcare tdl. .nurse or whatever, I would actually buy a domain for my brick and mortar business learn to save hearts for it. I know it will make back it's investment.

As an internet marketer though, i burn through so many domains so quick the new tdls are not worth the price to me.

Ah, my first visit here, and I'm terrified already! :-)

I went into godaddy yesterday and bought a few domains - an entirely new thing for me to do.

On the point of the three main extensions - I use another one, .us And so my site is www.venturephotography.us

My purchases yesterday revolved around the .photography or .photos extensions, and I bought:

      kidz.photography
      digitalwedding.photography
      bridesandgroom.photos
      focal.photography
      teenage.photography
      xoom.photography
      wellexposed.photos
      posed.photography
      retouched.photography

      Did I make a mistake?

Hey, hi everyone!!! My name is Hugh. :-)

        Hi Hugh and Welcome!

Under my particular point of view you could have
        registered the following .com domains:

        RETOUCHEDPHOTOGRAPHY.COM
        POSEDPHOTOGRAPHY.COM
        WELLEXPOSEDPHOTOS.COM
        XOOMPHOTOGRAPHY.COM
        BRIDESANDGROOMPHOTOS.COM

And under .photography the missing four.
By the way, the .com listed were available
at the time of writing this post.

        Good Luck!!

Ah, I see where you are going with that Meharis.

The digitalwedding.photography was the most attractive to me, followed by Kidz.photography. I guess my thinking was that if I created, for example, a site named POSED, then that's all it would have to be. The logo would be based around POSED and the .photography part being only required for the URL.

If I register it under a .com, then the site name would need to be POSEDPHOTOGRAPHY - a much longer name and therefore less attractive. Does that make any sense?

Maybe this will be one of those exercises that cost me a little money in the end, lol.

Thanks for the replies, it's appreciated.

i`m not sure what to say about this.. from one hand i believe it's more easy to identify the content of the website and more easy to remember but on the other hand, would the 3 letters at the end (ex: .org,.com.net etc) would make such a difference on forgetting the domain ? time will tell

No, I definitely don't think those four will become less popular. Especially the .com.

That's the one extension everybody automatically thinks of when you mention a domain without the extension, and most of the time even when you mention the extension, by the time they go to type it in a browser, they almost always seem to remember the domain having the extension .com.

I use .com and nothing but .com whenever possible. That usually means not having the exact domain I want, but I find that having a slightly different domain name with a .com extension still seems to rank better and gets more visitors than the exact domain name you want with another extension.

I tried .net a couple of times with no great loss in rank, but when trying .info or .org or others, and don't even get me started on some of the newer ones like .ws, my traffic results have been a lot less than I initially expected or would have liked.

I would just use .com if at all possible.

Well its been harder to see the 2nd most popular domains like .net, .org and info in top 10, how can these new domains rank based on their extensions is to be seen. IMO if Google doesn't give weight to EMD's then they wont give to these new extensions either, unless the site had very good content.

I am not liking these new extensions.

Just so you know, some of the new extensions are not yet set fully supported by safari. If you enter the domain without the http:// into the safari address bar, it will go to the search results page (not the website). If you enter the domain with the http:// it will go to the website. And if you enter then domain without the http:// on your next visit it will work, as long as you have not reset safari. If you are advertising your site offline this is not ideal as most people won't enter http:// and they will think your site isn't working. Have not been able to find any word around to the issue. Please add support for the new domain extensions safari !! Ones that have been available for longer than a month are still having this issue.

Hmm, sorry, I posted, then didn't get any notifications about the bunch of subsequent posts - until Kate posted. Weird.

I just saw Restore.net sell on Flippa for $5,100. I'm sure the .com would have sold for more, still ..... Like everything else, the value is dependent on how much someone wants it.

I just did a search for "wedding photography" and I'm on page one - with a .us domain. I guess I can't complain about that.

    My head hurts!!! :-)

Also take into consideration that .com is the worldwide recognized prime extension.

Not all over the world people read and understand English extensions, so those new ones do limit yourself bit in a Geographical way.

Some of those might be cool for local businesses, like the .dentist extension or .plumber etc...

Well, I don't see any resale value in new extensions. May be they'll pickup in years to come. So I wouldn't invest in new extensions yet. As most people said, .com is still the King, but may not be in another 10 years or so. Who knows....

Investing in these new extensions is a bit of a gamble, and it's definitely a long term thing. Most people outside of the internet marketing world aren't really following these new extensions and aren't even aware of them. Basically, it's not common knowledge. It's going to take for big brands to start using them for them to become more acceptable and popular. I mean most people don't know anything beyond .com, .net, .org, .gov, and .edu. If the big businesses don't use them, then they won't catch on.
