Building an email list from a 'Free Competition Entry'...?

Has anyone done this? I'm pretty new to IM and just thought about an idea...

You could run a 'competition' where people have to input their email address on a landing page type thing to enter the competition.

Advertise the comp on fb ads etc, get people to enter with email address and Bam...potential large email list for next to nothing..?

Possible? And yes i would be giving the winner something related to the comp/category etc.

This is probably an old idea, just thought i would run it past you guys.

Thanks

I think your idea has merit Londonwar. Personally, I would be going double optin just to provide a buffer for potential PR issues. Maybe you could tell subscribers that other contests and free offers will be ongoing for those who stay signed up to the list. Give incentive to 'hang around' etc. Good luck!

An email list alone is worth nothing. A targeted email list is what you want. If those people are targeted enough and you can build good rapport with them, then yes.

Personally I'm wary of entering free comps. People are exposed to a lot of these sort of offers via social media and email. In most cases they are posted by scammers or "like whores". Anybody who has had a bad experience (or knows somebody who did) would be suspicious. IMHO it just looks scammy.

This is definitely a legitimate method and I have seen others reporting their experience with this method (mostly on Facebook but other arenas seem just as workable). I agree with the advice that you need to make sure you let people know that you will be emailing them other offers and contests, etc. otherwise it can be a little spammy and you could get a lot of complaints. But, overall, this is definitely a workable method if done properly.

    Thanks for advice.
How would one set this up?

Facebook Ad --> click to a 'landing page' -> Enter email to enter -> email goes onto list via aweber

    does this sound right?

sorry for n00b Question, im new.

As this may get you a good number of entries but they are not potential buyers at the end because they came to your landing page to gamble without spending money and that's it. But if your audience is in need of your offer they may convert to buyers at some point.
Wish you the best of luck

All lists start somewhere, and this is not a bad concept at all. Let's face it - many people build a list initially by offering a 'freebie' of some sort. Sign up for my free newsletter, ebook, whatever.
Your concept sounds like it could engage the audience somewhat, which gives it great potential. It all comes down to how you follow up with the list you create.
