Congratulations on your diligence in doing your research and deciding what path to follow. The longer I am on this site (and it hasn't been that long) the more confused I become as to which area to focus on. Came here intending to do PLR writing, now becoming interested in what you've chosen.

There really is way too much information to digest. I am also overwhelmed. But I am heartened by how easily other, more senior members will come quickly to help you with any question -- no matter how dumb it may sound to you. I just hope I can reach the level to one day give back to those who will be where I am now!

No disrespect to Robbie, (it might be the ideal route for him, or others) but I would add -

I would caution that you should look at how pressing your need to make quick money to survive is, and if there is a sense of urgency, I personally wouldn't advise getting too enveloped in the problogger approach. Although his info is good, it may result in the wrong mindset and methodology if one can't 'go the distance' financially while blogging like a mad thing to get one blog producing a living.

(Disclaimer - Being careful to avoid sounding liking I'm emphasizing 'saturation' over 'abundance')

There are millions of blogs out there with mediocre content, a few hundred/thousand RSS subscribers and unclicked, flashing squares in the sidebar that are testament to the perils of trying to emulate problogger.

There are only a handful of people who survived while trying to emulate this approach (in particular, blogging about how to make money from blogging and making 6 figures from it) in comparison to the millions who failed epically.

Claire101 - I'm not suggesting that niche blogging is a bad idea - I do it. Therefore I would push towards you also investigating a more underground/anonymous, multi-facetted (possibly product-centric) approach as well as the 'problogger' way.

What I mean is perhaps using blogs (because wordpress is a great CMS) but not necessarily for 'blogging', but more for presenting affiliate offers (or your own, perhaps later on).

However much I believe that finding a 'fun way' to earn a crust should be of paramount importance in the long run, I would also emphasize that early on, I have found it to be much less about fun and more about hard work and boring repetition - the fun is found in the result of it (IE dough!).

I see this as the right way to do things, because many of us may need to do the groundwork and have a good grasp of the basics before we can (find reason to/afford to) progress to a different approach where the boring stuff is someone elses job, and the good stuff is all ours.

Further disclaimer - I don't say this just to be negative, but to try and be helpful based on my own experiences and my observation of others, their successes and failures - hope it helps.

Thanks ExRat - you know I see that this makes sense. I understand that blogging is not a fast track way to make money, but I feel it would be the most satisfying for me. However, so true about needing to make money fast - did I really sound that needy in my post??!

. I said that because for the majority, that is their situation. Then they try and be the next problogger and six months later go back to getting a job, claiming that the internet 'doesn't work.'

There are no stupid questions.

I'm not sure what you mean, so I'll explain what I meant. The approach that many people take is to have one main blog, which is their pride and joy. They spend their time and money on a posh theme, and the rest of their time blogging about how to make money online from blogging (when they don't really have the knowledge to do so yet.)

After a short while, they have recycled most of problogger's posts and run out of things to say, so they start talking about anything at all (just to keep up the high post count) or making blatant promotional posts, and the blog ends up becoming untargetted and no-one bothers reading it.

They spend their time chasing 'social traffic' (other bloggers) who are notorious for never buying much from other bloggers or clicking on ads.

This is common, and generally a waste of time.

The alternative that I suggest is -

a) use wordpress, not for blogging as such, but because it's the best CMS (content management system)

b) don't fall in love with one blog, create a whole bunch of them - quick and dirty

c) aim for targetted buyer traffic, by using 'buyer keywords', away from the 'make money' niche, ideally promoting physical products in high demand. It's also worth understanding and testing adsense, as well as keeping an open mind to the possibility of either selling advertising space yourself, or even flipping some blogs. Alternatively, (or as well) you could consider list building via a blog.

d) learn a little about SEO and again, apply this to targetting buyers

More than anything, I'm suggesting investigating these approaches rather than falling into the trap that so many fall into of following the problogger approach, chasing social traffic and building a blog in the make money from blogging niche while classing success as having 2000 feedburner subscribers, many of whom leave comments, but none of them buy anything from your ads.

Unless you're just out for fun. My advice assumes you want to make money.

Once you have mastered wordpress and and have experience from a wider variety of different niches that you have tested, you can go into any area and hit it hard - for example, building local portals or building sites for business.

I agree with most of your points, but I would clarify -

Blogging is not a direct strategy in my view, because it will not bring traffic quickly - or at all in many cases.

...that when I talk about blogging (as I have explained) I'm simply talking about using hosted wordpress as the main site building platform. You can get traffic almost instantly on a new blog, correctly configured with a few tricks to alert the SEs.

Plus -

You do need to learn how to choose products to sell and how AdWords works, and AWeber works, but you could do that in a week. You can make products later.

...this was discussed recently, and in my opinion, that's bad advice for a newbie. Much better to spend a week learning wordpress and basic SEO and learning those things later.

99% of newbies will crash and burn if they try and do that (PPC-autoresponder) after a week. It will take them a week to understand the adwords/autoresponder interface and then they'll go and throw some money at some broad, non buyer keywords at $1 - $25 a shot.

Also, bear in mind the OP said this -

I would take what ExRat says very seriously.

I made the mistake of trying to learn everything and now I am narrowing my focus to Wordpress and video.

It's much better and profitable to be an expert at one or two things than a jack of all trades who knows just enough about everything to be dangerous. That is, of course, if you are interested in building a real business.

The big danger of a forum is that all the info kills your natural instincts and you try to become something you are not.

If you go with Wordpress and really learn about it in-depth you can make money not just from blogging, but by installing blogs for other people and even helping offline businesses.

But please, don't go the 'fake it till you make it' route. It's sickening the amount of threads telling newbies how to get 'offline gold' by first getting the business and then rushing back here and hoping they can find someone to help them actually do the work.

I kid you not. I have seen people posting things like "I've got a $500 contract to build a website. Please tell me - should I use Wordpress or Joomla?"

Spending money on IM products is something that 99% of newcomers do, and it really confuses them and will rarely, if ever work - at least in the long-term.

I have been in the Internet and marketing from the start, and I have many IM friends - many well known - but I cannot think of one product that was launched say 3 years ago that is still around, or at least works, today.

Look - Internet Marketing is no different to marketing used over the last 200 years - only the medium is different. The vast majority of products and strategies out there are designed to make money for the people who invented them to make money as a product. Very few < 1% have any long-term potential. Buying these products wastes money and throws you way off the marketing path. Most aspiring IM's end up disillusioned before they even get started with a big hole in their bank account - and sometimes a very unhappy partner.

You need one website, products to sell or promote, an AWeber or similar account and a method to acquire traffic quickly - PPC is the best in the short term.

You do need to learn how to choose products to sell and how AdWords works, and AWeber works, but you could do that in a week. You can make products later.

Blogging is not a direct strategy in my view, because it will not bring traffic quickly - or at all in many cases.

If you want to sell stuff then sell stuff - just do it.

Information overload really can get ya - I know. I have dual hundred gig hard drives and am in dire need of a new computer or back up - and it's mostly ebooks, videos, mp3's, etc related to the 'make money online' theme! (Although there are a few niche things thrown in...if I could only find them!)LOL

Seriously though, the best thing you can do is find one thing you 'fit' with - and concentrate on that. Once you've mastered it, you can start throwing other things in the mix. Don't try to do everything at once and remember - outsourcing is your friend!

Wow, great advice for everybody in this thread.

Claire, you have a good idea on what to do, but believe it or not I think you need to tighten down your focus even more! Here are some steps I would suggest:

1) look at this thread or this thread http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ot-niches.html or this thread http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...step-step.html for ideas and information on what makes a good "niche" and how to choose one.

Choosing a good niche where people are desperate for a solution and go online looking for it is the #1 skill you have to cultivate.

2) Go to Clickbank or PayDotCom and find a product that looks good and promises to sell the solution, buy it, and read it. Become well-versed in the solutions to the problems present in the niche you chose.

3) Get a simple clean WordPress theme with lots of whitespace like this one WordPress › LightWord Free WordPress Themes (no affiliation).

4) Start writing! Write about the solutions and techniques you know, either about how you are using them and they are giving you results, or what you think about the consequences and benefits of using them will be for others. Write with authority and confidence and always with a positive attitude and the goal of actually helping people. This is called pre-selling - the #2 most important skill you can cultivate.

5) At the end of every post include a little by-line for your solution product, along with your affiliate link.

6) When you have a decent amount of posts and content and are happy that it has value THEN start thinking about SEO, backlinking, article marketing, and how you can optimize and add to you blog to start ranking it. Not before.

7) When you're happy with what you've achieved with SEO and you've had some sales THEN start thinking about a little PPC. Not before and not a lot at first. Put in only what you can afford (ie some of what you've brought in with the SEO efforts).

8) IF this has turned out to be a good niche that converts sales, think about taking what youve learned from what you've read, written and discussed with people and making your own product to sell.

The trick, like ExRat wisely says, is not to fall in love or get tied down to ONE blog. Plan for adapting and varying your approach. You will have some duds. You will do the above sequence probably a few times before anything takes off.

Usually when one does take off and start pulling in hits and clicks and sales, you'll be all like "WHY THAT ONE??"

it'll be weird because you can't even tell what's the difference between that one and the other ones that don't do anything. That's how it is with niche SEO blogging. But you'll get a feel for it eventually.

Hope this helps a bit, it's really not as slow as it sounds once you've done it a couple times

Hi Claire,
I feel compelled to point out that Darren Rowse of ProBlogger actually makes most of his money with a website selling cameras, not blogging. My advice is to stop reading make money blogs and pick one business model and learn it well. When you are in the profit zone, rinse and repeat. When you grow tired of that business model move on to something else. Save PPC and adsense for later when you have more experience under your belt. The only money worth spending now is for buying your domain and hosting for your own wordpress blog (that's wordpress.org NOT wordpress.com).

I started off reading problogger and john chow and a whole lot more people trying to tell everyone how to make money online. Just remember the sites with the most anchored backlinks are the winners. Doesn't matter what WP theme you choose, doesn't matter the niche, all that matters is how many anchored backlinks are pointing to your site. No follow, do follow, low PR, high PR, it doesn't matter the quality, what matters is the quantity of anchored backlinks. As soon as your site goes live, start getting links. Google loves wordpress and will index your site within the week. Don't even think about how to get indexed, it will happen automatically if your site is a wordpress.org blog.

Spend 10% of your time building the site and 90% of your time getting links. It's boring work but it pays, over and over, without you ever having to update your blog.

Maybe this doesn't apply to you, but I found that I experienced overwhelm by trying to learn too much without taking action and then trying to be perfect when I took action. Just take action and improve each day. Each day is spent tweaking the sales funnel whether it's adding content, improving the squeeze page, improving the autoresponder series, finding better converting products, writing better articles, doing better keyword search, learning html, css, java, php. The fun part is just getting a little better every day. Slow and steady wins the race.
