DON'T Do This, Email List Builders

Earlier today I sent in a letter of inquiry for a writing job I saw posted on Craigslist. Everything looked on the up and up. The company needed someone to join it's marketing team as a copywriter. The job was posted in the writing jobs section of the board, etc.

The ad's poster plugged my address into his email list server.

I know that it was the same poster because the "welcome to the list!" email was advertising the same business to which I had just offered my writing services.

Don't do this guys. It's gross and spammy and, frankly, infuriating.

Definitely unethical, and is a person that will get his autoresponder banned. Sp@mmers don't get very far.

A WF user here was doing this. He posted in the jobs section and when people replied he'd add their email to his list. He posted here to ask what he should do with the 5,000 email addresses he had. HIGHLY UNETHICAL and against the Craigslist TOS.

After taking a pounding from other WF members, he saw the error of his ways and stopped.

You should find out who this person is using for their email list and report them.

    Hi,

I get emails every single day from people when I know I haven't even
considered joining their list in the first place.

They either find my email from somewhere, add me without consent
and then send me a load of spam emails every single day.

Just the way it is I suppose.

    erinwrites,

    Report this person to Craigslist.
I suggest using a different email when responding for this kind of ads.
You can change it later on after confirming it's legit.

This is highly unethical. The strange thing is why don't these people see that? Would this be one of those 'environmental factors' that cause people to 'go bad'. I don't believe they were born like this!...but that's a story for another post.

One way to find out where your spam email address has come from is to use lots of different email addresses. Now you may say this is difficult but it is not really. I just use my christian name and a number so david1@mydomainname.com and david2@mydomainname.com and so on. I am about david89 at the moment. If you don't have a catch-all email address the christian name and number should suffice when signing up. A quick search in your email package will soon reveal the original account you signed up to.

What scares me about this is that eventually, this will happen all too common, internet lawyers will get involved, maybe bring it public and then all of a sudden we have this news special on how you should be aware of the stuff people are sending you and that people should be more cautious about giving their email addresses to squeeze pages. If it isn't associated with an authority figure like a person or a blog or trusted website. WTF!!!

OK, I don't think I would ever do that., It is outright lying like a dead dog in my books. Maybe I just naturally KNOW what is right.
