What is the most reliable way to keep updated backup of my wordpress blog.

    Have you tried using a backup service in cpanel?

    Also you can use wptwin, bakupbuddy or wp backup creator. these backup plugins or softwares they simply copy all the directory files for that particular wordpress. You can manually go in with FTP and download a copy of that directory to your hard drive then go into cpanel and go to phpmyadmin and find your database for that wordpress( if not sure look in your config file for database name). when you find your database export a copy to save with your downloaded files! You can clone that sight by uploading the files to a new directory. create a new database and import the database backup file into phpmyadmin. you will have to edit the config file with the new database info!

    I recommend backup creator as it always have worked for me and simple to use! I own wp twin and backup buddy but backup creator has done the job fast for me many times over!

    Personally i don't trust plugins to do my Backups because in many occasion they didn't work as expected. I do it manuallly at the end of every day, but it's up to you!

        You can backup you database trough your Phpmyadmin, and your files from your ftp uploader.

    I would buy the premium version of Backup Creator (automatic backups). I believe it's like 47 bucks. I have the $7 version and it works fine for me.

    What many people don't realize is that backing up the site is the easy part - restoring it is where the trouble starts.
    Just because you have certain files backed up doesn't mean you'll find it easy to get the site working again if you've nothing left working.
    I had a server problem (self created!) that deleted an entire site, database and all, even the .htaccess file.
    I was left with a blank screen - couldn't even get in to my cpanel.
    A few old database backups doesn't make you feel much better at this point!
    I used to rely on a free plugin to back up my database but now I use Backupbuddy to grab everything.
    I’ve tried taking the backup files and installing the entire site onto a new domain – it works just fine and leaves me feeling much more relaxed.
    Just imagine you’ve lost your whole blog, take a look at that little database back up file and see if you can get it going on a new site – some of you may find this easy – not me!
    My lesson here is simple – don’t wait until your site has been deleted, hacked or destroyed – back it up now with a proper tool for the job, don't wait until it's too late.

    I suggest you to do it manually. Back up your files and databases. You can also Back up your whole website through c Panel.

      There have been a few requests in the thread on how to backup Wordpress manually.

      This is achieved by downloading all the Wordpress files and folders on your server, into a backup folder on your computer, plus a copy of the MySQL database.

      Here's a video that walks you through the process using cPanel. Although you can use FTP to download the files and folders if you wish.
      Once you have made a manual back-up, all you need to set-up are regular backups of the database. There are plenty of plugins that will do this. However, and this bit is important, if you upgrade Wordpress to a newer version you will need to backup copies of the files and folders again!
      This is because the saved Wordpress files need to match the Database created for that version!

      To keep track of what version of Wordpress your backups are, simply name your backup folder - Wordpress Backup Ver "whatever"

    In the beginning I used to back up everything manually on a weekly basis.

    When I grew up to almost 30 websites, this was a complete pain in the rear to keep up with so I bought BackUp Creator.

    It worked good but I still had to run it manually (I only had like the lite version or something).

    I finally ended up using Backup Buddy and I couldn't recommend this enough.

    PS. If you only have one or two sites, you can definitely do it manually but I believe in automation when done right (I'm a systems engineer after all).

    I used to do my own manual backups. It gets pretty tedious if you're a website developer like me, with several websites to administer.

    I now use that UpdraftPlus WordPress plugin (bought the full paid version) to schedule automatic backups to my DropBox account. The pro version of UpdraftPlus also lets me move WordPress installations from folder to folder, or even to new domains. That's a non-trivial process and pretty impressive.

    But I fail to understand why not use cpanel of the hosting services provider, (Hostgator in my case) to take backup. Is it not enough? Why to use plugins when this free service is available in cpanel at click of a button?

      Hostgator backup is secured and totally fine and there is no need to take backup using any plugin unless you know how to handle wordpress or are technical.

      I also use hostgator and usually have a server backup first and then a local desktop backup using the plugins.

      There's lots of great advice above, but I'll add this to address your question:

      One of the main reasons TO backup your Site is to have the necessary replacement files should the Site be hacked or the server go down. Sometimes, Site issues are the fault of the host. If you have your Site and your backup(s) hosted by the same company, and they have a technical issue, shut down, or get hacked, where does that leave you?

      At the very least, if you DO backup using a host's services, make sure you can then download and store those files elsewhere, and TEST their value before a crisis happens. (Grab a second URL or create a subdirectory, and install the Site using your backups to see that it REALLY works. Then you can delete it all on the second URL or in the subdirectory.) This is something you should do with ANY option you choose whether it's the host or a plugin or another 3rd party solution.

      With all of that said, the other issue is the complexity of the Site. If you are using basic text and image content, and there aren't shopping carts and forums and other add ons, the basic Import/Export feature that's built into WordPress is all you need.

    There are many many plugins, but I also go to my control panel and do things manually.

    Beware however that you need to be structured using this approach, if you are not sure you can stick to the routine then you'll leave yourself open and exposed to issues.

    Daily it is for me. If you are a hyper blogger some of the plugins mentioned above backup in real time, but you only need that level of protection if you have that level of data being fed to your site.

      There are many plug-in in wordpress. You can use any one of them. I am using plug-in for backup.

      Every plug-in have different working. Some of them everyday take back-up. You can download any one of them or more as you need.

    Installed WP-DBManager and use that it seems to work easy. I don't know about restoring tho, I see the button and I assumed its one click and done but you guys are scaring me now. lol

    I installed Backwpup also but I think that one uses dropbox and my dropbox is already full so I just use the 1st one I said.

    I would have got a chance to try out restore last night had I been backing up, I was like 4 hours into installing plugin and activating and building and following step by step video and one of the things they showed to do completely screwed up my display where all the menus on side bar were at the bottom. I googled and saw a lot of people for years have had things like that happen and since I am new to WP I didn't think I could figure how to fix it so I trashed everything and started over. lol

    Duplicator is a free wp plugin that has done the job for me. It's easy to use and easy to install a site if you wish to move it for any reason

    I find WPTwin is excellent for backing up and restoring blogs. It is easy to set up, easy to use and easy to restore, either on the original site or a back-up site. Where security and reliability is important, back it up regularly and immediately restore it to a back-up blog to ensure the back-up works. I use it on blogs I flip but don't forget to change the password to something simple before backing up and change it back on the original blog afterwards.
