How can I give Cpanel login info of only one site in my hosting account? I mean I have several sites and I do not want the developer to have access to other sites. What URL do I use to acceess only one domain/site ?

You can provide ftp access for a specific domain. But if they need cPanel access, as far as I know, there is no way of granting partial access to cpanel.

If you know who they are, their full name and contact details, and they obviously are a professional, then you shouldn't need to worry about it. Just let them do their job and then change all passwords when they've finished.

I would only be wary if it was some guy with a username and a Gmail address!

Thank you but how do I give ftp access for a specific domain? Cpanel not necessary ftp access is fine but how do I do that. Now that I was chatting with the agent in hostgator and he guided me on setting up ftp acct then I asked him what URL I should use to access the ftp and then he told me there is no specific URL. How? I took long time with him and he gave me some link to read etc.. then I said buy without my question answered. How do I do that or what URL do I use to access it??

OK. to connect via FTP you need the Hostname: Username: Password:

The hostname will be in the format - ftp.mygreatdomain.com
The username will be the first eight letters of the domain name - mygreatd

Determining your password varies depending on who you are hosting with, so it will probably be quicker just to ask them what the ftp password is for that domain.

The developer said it would just be easier to build the site straight onto the server instead.
I didn’t think it would be a problem because there’s nothing on the CPanel since its completely new. He wont have access to my account details or anything because that login is completely different from the CPanel. Also remembering that I will be resetting the password when its complete?

It sounds like he is building a CMS site. Many of these platforms require the use of a database, so he will need access to cPanel for that.

Yes, just change any passwords when he is finished. Much of the time this is done not because of a lack of trust of the other party, but because you should be the only one with access to the password. It's just good security practice.

You can't give cpanel to only one site if you have addon domains. The best solution here would obviously be to have reseller account. There you can setup cpanel for each domain. Since you obviously don't have it, you will have to trust the developer :/

Not trusting your developer is like not trusting your mechanic who works on your car. If you dont trust either of them you should get a new one.

That's the big advantage of a reseller account. Each domain can have it's own control panel, and you can send the person the log in info for just that domain. I suppose you could upgrade if it's worth it to you.

Thank you Myles I remembered I used to login with ftp.mygreatdomain.com some time in the past and I was easily uploading file in windows XP. Now I have win 7 premium and it works in browsers and it is only for your eyes because you can not upload anything to your host. Besides It hasn't worked for the addon domain only for the main domain has it worked. Any solution?

You're welcome. You need an FTP program to upload and download files between your PC and server. There are quite a few to choose from. I use Filezilla which works well. Plus it's free!

      Just a monthly fee!

It's a hosting account that enables you to create as many separate accounts as the package you've purchased will allow.

You can get fairly cheap shared reseller hosting as a starting point.

Maybe windows has disabled this feature in the recent versions of windows because I remember accessing the files on the host as if they were in my pc. I can use filezilla no problem with that but anyways I have to give the login URL for the developer then what do I give him?

Forgive me it is not a developer but I developed the site in a shared hosting and now I want to give them the file accessing login info without compromising my files. That is it, it is not an issue of a developer.

I've never used a browser to ftp, but I believe it is possible to do this with Windows 7. Here is a page that might help - How to Access FTP in Windows 7 - Amnet - Colorado IT Support

Your login details will comprise of the following three bits of information.

      Hostname: Username: Password:

The login url is - ftp.yourdomain.com (Also known as your Hostname)
Your developer will also need the username and password as discussed in post No.4

I'm shutting down my office now, so hope this helps!

PS. You need to be able to trust the person you allow access to your server. As long as they are a professional, you will be fine. If you have reason not to trust them, then you shouldn't give out your ftp or cPanel details!
